i was reading about how fast the world consumes fossil fuels, and it has been estimated that we will run out of oil in 20 years.

so what are you gonna do when gas is 10 dollars a gallon, or when we are out of gas?

by then I think we'll have a different feul source...

Ive done reports on hydrogen powered cars, there's electric cars, even a car that runs off air... O_o yeah crazy huh? Watched a show on it awhile ago. Some french guy invented it lol

technology is amazing...

I think in 20 years they will have probably developed synthetic petrol to keep all the older cars running...if they havnt done so already and are just keeping it quiet.

with full electric cars, we are still limited on battery performance. So far the best electric cars have a range of less then 100 miles.

Ethanol is not an 100% gas substitute. "Drawbacks: The DOE backs ethanol as an energy efficient fuel, but some researchers, such as Cornell's David Pimentel, argue that the biofuel requires more than a gallon of oil to make just one gallon of ethanol. And even if all of the nation's corn supply were recruited for ethanol, the fuel would meet less than 10 percent of transportation needs. The environmental consequences of ramping up pesticides to produce large-scale biofuel crops also must be considered."

hydrogen powered cars: well it takes alot of energy to get hyrdrogen, and there is no safe way to store it. we are currently having problems storing this in car, so currently the range of a hyrogen powered car is severly limited.

air powered cars: i dont know much about it. But it appears as they make the cars with very high tech matericals so it is very light. So that is why it has decent range ( 100+ miles).

Hybrid cars still need gasoline power.

we have had all that technology for yeaaaaars. since Nicolas Tesla lol, its not in the favor of the government and huge oil companies to give us free energy because whats in it for them? and i doubt we cant go 20 years without a world war lol. bah i'm going outside to enjoy the weather.

Yeah same, iv'e done a few reprts/papers on different fuel sources and how the carbons from gas are declining our environment, kind of interesting what you can find online smile.gif

btw that show is called "Future Cars", a series they had on the Discovery Channel not that long ago. Pretty cool show and very informative! Of course now the only problem is getting people to purchase that technology. I mean not everyone will want to/ can afford to have a few thousand dollar system put into thier car that allows them to run on some other form of fuel.

personally, i kind of wish my car was a diesel, because then i could spend a couple thousand on this one machine, i forget what its called, but its cool because it allows you to make your own biodiesel from just left over greese and such.

I don't think you need a special thousand dollar machine to convert used grease into biodiesel. I watched a show once, with an old '86 mercedez benz out of the junkyard. They went to a local resturant and picked up a few pails of used grease, went and filtered it a bunch of times (getting progressively finer, ending up filtering a few times with a coffee like filter for the final few) and poured it into the gas tank and the car ran fine, for a junkyard find running on non-processed (other than filtering) used cooking grease...

I wonder how the kyoto accord up north here is going to affect petroleum drilling/processing if the canadian gov't decides to comply...

so what are you gonna do when gas is 10 dollars a gallon?

1 gallon = 4.546 litres
1 litre = 0,80 cyp
1 cyp = 2.35294 USD

do some maths

(or if its difficult 8.56 usd per gallon)

I personally don't care about the gas prices for my car, if it goes way to up I'll get a moped or get a vtec-e civic lol, the real problem is how those big trailer trucks, boat and planes will work.(though boats can use nuclear power). Airplaines and tractor trailers need long range, reliable solutions.
They provide everything from food to stuff we buy and need and that will make everything we buy go up in price to make up for the loss.

Gas is pretty much already expensive, 55$ to fill up the the car, its its still cheaper in the long run to keep your car than buy a new gas saving car / hybrid. Until then I'll sit down and watch the show.

i'm interested in buying a diesel car or truck and converting it to run on vegetable oil. i've been toying around with the idea since i started my degree (mech. eng.) because an improved system would make a great senior project.

i've also considered trying to convert an engine to run on ammonia, but the idea is stuck on paper at the moment. ammonia burns slower than gasoline, so the timing and valvetrain would have to be revised for it to work right....unlike biodiesel, which is more or less plug-and-play.

from my perspective, the hydrogen fuel-cell car is the future. if and when big oil companies are forcibly prevented from stuffing their fat corporate pockets with this country's money by the government, there is plenty of room to establish a production and distribution network for hydrogen, and further experimentation and research can provide improvements to the supercapacitors and storage systems that are required but currently underdeveloped. big oil is the biggest road block atm, because it would cost them alot of money to start working with hydrogen instead of petroleum...and big automakers aren't far behind, because they want to make as few improvements as they can and keep selling cars.

haven't you guys seen back to the future part 2. in the future, they have mr fusion that recycles junk and garbage and turns them into energy. and the cars only travel on land when going slow speeds on side streets and what-not. most of the time the fly on highways.

just like whats happening with our oil supply, that's why we are always looking for different types of fuels...and always will...
