Hello everyone,

I have purchased 2 weeks ago a used 1995 St manual with 167,000 miles for $900.00 from my buddy, the condition of the car is great, except because friend of mine wasnt very cautious and carefull of his car, slacking on little problems causign others, anyways, my problem is this.

At idling i hear knocking sound coming from the engine, listening closer i would think something sounds like there is a little problem.

1. Valve knocking
2. Piston slaping
3. Engine mount
4. Or i do not know

a. Did some research, id there and engine knock than it needs to get adjusted, HOW?

b. If there is a piston slap, check which one by disconnecting a spark plus wire from each cylinder at a time untill knocking stops to get the right one, if so, Than WHAT?

c. Could it be an engine mount? Is so, than if i fill it with polytherine, from experience it will eliminate wheel hop but make higher vibrations, but will it mount better? sounds silly when someone may fill in broken engine mount to fix it, is it not?

If it something else let me know, please, i am slowelly repairing and tuning it up, so let me know, cause i want it to work well, thanks.

you can rule out piston slap.

get a video of the noise.

Tonight, after college i will take a video and post it to make it easier.

Why do you think Piston slap is not the problem?

Does it burn oil?

Gas mileage dropped a little, as for oil it needs an oil change, oil black as hell, never had seen such a dark oil before, i have a list of things that need to be flushed and hcnaged.

Not what I asked... but if it burns a lot of oil... that's usually a sign of piston wear, be it the rings or piston slap as you say. Piston slap doesn't happen often however...

normally if you have a noise in the bottom end, it will get louder as you rev it and you would be able to hear it from inside the car. if its in the head, it would go away when you rev the motor.

neglecting oil changes is pretty much the only cause for blown 5sfe's or 7afe's. those motors will run forever as long as you change the oil at 3,000 miles and top it off in between.

today just did fuel filter change, the worsest and most enoying thing that i had ever done, thanks to a buddy of mine, without him i would be doomed right now. Anyways, we started the car and there is slight, very fast knocking, accelerating makes the knocking louder. I recorded a video but on my buddy's cam, so i will post it tomorrow when i get it from him. As from inside, it is noticable only in sound, almost no vibrations, so i have no clue.

It might be your lifters, LOTS of yotas develop lifter taps at high mileage, all mine are tapping and it sounds really really bad but you have no need to worry if it is the lifters, ill watch your vid tommarow and double check

this is sounding way too familiar. if it is a rod knock, a piston is bound to bust through the block tongue.gif , if a broken rod is the problem, then i REALLY feel your pain.

Hey, thought i'd be able to chime in a little bit here, Uhm, if your car is a 95 st, it doesn't have lifters in it, if i'm not mistaken, most if not all 6g celicas have over head cams. If you have a knocking sounds, you will rule out engine mount because rubber insulators don't make a knocking sound, if the knocking sound were in the block, the sound increases as you rev the engine, it's most likely a rod knock coming from your block. if the knocking sound were in the head, you'd most likely have a misfire due to one of the valves snapped in half and not allowing any compression in the cylinder. Hope to hear it soon.

It's probably big end bearings worn, connect an oil pressure gauge and see what the idle pressure is.

When was the timing belt last changed? They will start slapping around as they get worn. they are supposed to be changed every 60-75000 miles. check that too.

Hey guys, man so many replies, thanks alot, well i had school and tests really took my free time away, plus it gave some time for everyone to participate in helping me out over here. The video is going to be posted today, yes i am a lier now because i promissed to post it the night after we did a fuel filter change, but every time i just forgot to take that video from him, so thats why i am not saying "i will", I am posting it online this evening and so i can figure out what could be the problem. Just to get something straight here.

1. It is not an engine mount because the mount can creat such a noise? i can agree with it, too, just thought it could be anyway, need to be to sure to eliminate that from the list.

2. If the valve is broken than would one of my cylinders even work?

3. Oil light doesnt flicker at all, i did an engine light check procedure "connecting a wire in diagnostics box with E1 and TE1 and engine light flickered constantlly meaning it is normal and no codes, drove it to my brothers house where it ahs been parked to this day and engine light still has not been on since.

4. To check oil pressure i do not have a gauge for that, is it possible to check it at a local auto parts store? Plus i do not know what is the normal pressure level.

5. Timing belt has been replaced less than 2 years ago, friend of mine had it replaced because this car was his replacement from insurance because his other black 95 celica was rear ended and totalled.

My opinion before i post video:
When the car is started you can hear a fast knocking noise in one of the cylinders, inside of the engine block, which one i couldnt tell neither my buddy, with throttle open to a full knocking becomes louder, still as fast as before but louder.

Please, do not get mad at me for not posting it on time, i am just like everyone else have a life, but still very thankfull for all your help.

Just FYI, they DO have lifters.
The buckets are considered lifters.

The cam lobes hitting the shims on top of the lifters creates a ticking sound.
Whether it's his or not I don't know, but it's VERY common on Toyotas.
Not much you can do about it.
