well i was thinking the 3sgte is too much power and i need my gas........lol

so then i was thinking the 3sge beams puts out around 200hp has the vvt-i system and it isnt turbo'd (guessing better mpg??)

how harder is it to find parts for the 3sge beams???

what about installing is it like the 3sgte without the hassled of the things with the turbo...............like intercooler............bov..........oil lines and coolant lines.............stuff like that........

3sge Beams parts are much harder to find then any other motor (or so i would assume) because of the rarity of the motor, and the fact that it was only released in JPN.

I too was looking into this a while back. I went down to the local speed shop and spoke with the owner about completing a BEAMS swap, and what is the pricing for sourcing all of the needed parts.. He stared at me, smacked me, and said "stick with the 4A Blacktop".

The truth is, is that you can find the BEAMS engine, and it will cost you. Now once you get it in you'll be fine.... until it breaks. Then what are you going to do? It wasn't ever brought to America (maybe some Rav4's have it over here?) and is even uncommon in other countries, so if (and when) it does break on you, you might be down for months before finding and spending a fourtune on the replacement parts.

with either swap (beams or gte) you're gonna have to run higher octane gas.

I've seen places sell the beams for around $1800 to $4000, but they rarely have them in stock though.

The 3sgte motor is more common and parts are extremely easy to source, whereas the beams I hear you have to get the parts from Japan...

The turbo motor isn't as bad as you think. The common usdm 2nd. gen version comes with 200 bhp and gets pretty good mpg. The problem with people not having real good mpg on here is that they have a lead foot and up the boost alot.

The stock bhp isn't that much off from each other and neither is the mpg rating. And if you tune it right, you can get even better gas milage. The main factor that changes the gas you use is..well...you and your right foot.

The beams is a cool motor, but unless you can get it for a good price, and want an all-motor set-up, it may just not be fully worth it. Definite cool points, but ....

Whoa, hold up. I've been on (more reading) the mr2oc forums and there are some nice 5s-fte's over there. The 5s is strong, their main weak point has been the rod bolts. (don't want to spin for long beyond 7k rpms)

Everyone says the 5s sucks but after reading some of their info, (and some of our own fte'ers) a turbocharged 5s can put out some very nice results. Completly restored my faith in the motor under my hood. Before I was thinking about the ge head swap but now...I just may stick with the fe head!

What 808Celica, like trade? Nah just kidding, but seriously. I too was thinking about doing a Redtop Beams 3sge engine swap before deciding to do the 20v silvertop engine swap but believe me, alot of people that I know here and also a few up in the mainland know that finding parts will be extremely hard to find. I've tried asking a few techs in the MR2 forums and a few in CLUB4AG that know about the engine and all mentioned that parts is hard to come by. Even the locals that know about it said that it ain't worth it, expecially because if you do so happen find parts you can kiss your paycheck good bye. So think about it carefully as there are other options that are probably better for you (IMO, 3SGTE thumbsup.gif)

did my swap about a year and a half ago. Still runs great. It will run on normal gas. The comp will just detune the ingition to prevent knocking. You will loose some HP but it runs fine.
