Is anyone else using the newly released Windows version of the Apple Safari web browser?

I downloaded it this morning, and I'm incredibly unhappy.

The first thing I noticed was that when I maximize the window on my second desktop (I have multiple monitors), the window gets lost. It still shows up in the taskbar, but I'm unable to see it or bring it back, so I'm stuck closing the browser and restarting it.

So when I restarted Safari, the factory bookmarks that I had just deleted magically re-appeared. So I had to delete them again, and now they don't seem to come back. Thought that was a bit odd.

And what's most annoying is that Safari fails when loading pages with an unknown error, like so:

QUOTE
Safari can’t open the page “http://127.0.0.1:85/members/coomer”. The error was: “unknown error” ((null):10053) Please choose Report Bugs to Apple from the Help menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.

Wow, now that's a helpful error message if I've ever seen one. rolleyes.gif I'm using it to test the new 6GC architecture/code, and it can't even load about one out of eight pages randomly from my web server on my local machine. If I type in the URL again, then it works.

Other than those problems, it seems to be nice. I wish it used the standard Windows UI design. But it's pretty quick, the rendering engine seems to work well, and it seems to be compatible with all of the new code I've been writing. tongue.gif

Anyone else using Safari on Windows? What's your experience been like?

I've been using too it. I like the browser, but they definitely have some bugs to take care of. Which is expected since its only in beta form.

I've noticed sometimes when you have drop down boxes, it crashes if you do more than 2 or so. It's happened on 2 or 3 websites now. Like Tire Rack when selecting year, make, model.

Another thing I use all the time is Ctrl + Backsapce to delete a whole word at a time, and it doesn't work in Safari. It inserts an invisible character too, because when you push backspace it doesn't do anything the first time. If that makes sense..

It loads pages quickly, but the pictures aren't very fast to load for some reason. Like it only loads 1 or 2 at a time, whereas in Firefox you can set how many connections it has at once, so for broadband it loads pictures fast. I haven't been able to find anywhere to adjust that yet.

Other than those, I like the browser. Hopefully they'll be able to fix the bugs soon enough. Certainly not deleting Firefox or IE anytime soon though..

i even ditched safari on my MAC side of my macbook i run mozilla on both sides. keeps everything the same and i dont have issues like that unknown error. safari is good for web surfing and websites optimized for safari its amazing. but as soon as you get into buggy pages or high security logins. it chokes almost 50% of the time. when safari first came out it was doing better than mozilla or anything else was. then 2.0 came out. (talk about fixing a good thing until it breaks). thats my mouthful smile.gif

It is buggy, but 3.0.1 seems a little better. I haven't noticed any problems with dual monitors but haven'treally used it much and I use Ultramon which might make a difference.

The one thing I like is that it is really fast, especially Javascript. Animations that look rubbish on IE or FF are really smooth on Sarafi and generally the Javascript engine feels faster. I also have some horrendous pages with huge numbers of tables (an internal webapp that monitors servers) and Safari is much happier rendering this than FF or IE.

But it is buggy. So far all the bugs and unstability I've seen seem to be Windows-specific but time will tell I guess. I use FF as my first preference for both Mac and Windows but have a number of browsers installed including older versions of IE so I can double-check usability and visual bugs for websites and webapps on which I work.

Having a Safari browser that runs on Windows will help me as it means I don't need to fire up the Mac so often (just to do final checks for bugs that only manifest in Safari for Mac). I like the Mac, but currently prefer it as a home OS than a work OS. I've mainly used Unix/Linux as my work OS in the past, so maybe I'll move over to Mac OS X for my work OS in the future.

Lol, I only use it the same way as IE, just for testing.
I regularly use both FF and Opera.

On my macbook I always use safari. Haven't seen any pages that don't work there, aside from sites that won't work on anything except IE (which I won't visit a second time).
