Here's how I do it. Check it everytime you fill up on gas. (Hey you gotta do something while it pumps, right?) Owning a rotary got me into this happen and it's worked great. You can just simply monitor the condition of oil. I always check for color change, smell, fuild level and inspect for metal shavings. On my old 6gc (5S w/ bolts ons) I used only mobil 1 syn and bosch filters. When I drained the oil it would still be at 70% after 3,000miles.
Bottom line, if it's clean and not leaking, leave it alone. Just change the filter every 3k -------------------- NASA/SCCA RX-7....currently under the knife

I work for Lexus and they recommend oil change intervals every 5,000-7,500 miles depending on driving conditions. Most come in with no problems every 5,000 with regular oil. I change the oil in my N/A camry every 3,000 miles or 4 months. In my turbo celica I use mobile 1 full syn. and change it every 3,000 miles. It may be excessive, but it makes me feel much better to change it then. Plus its only $25 total. So thats about $100-$125 per year. I can definetly spill that small amount of money to keep the rings and bearings happy and clean on a $1,500 motor. Not to mention the labor involved in an engine swap. Just a matter of opinion though.
