Hello - first post here so be gentle with me, ok?!

I picked up a 97 GT 2 weeks ago today and have to admit i'm loving it so far, its a fair bit faster than the 1990 1.1L Fiesta that it replaced!! Looking to make it as nice as some of the ones i have been looking at round here but think it might take a while on my salary frown.gif

anyway, i have bought two sets of speakers to replace the stock ones - a pair of JBL GTO6507C 6.5" components for the front and a pair of JBL GTO6527 6.5" co-ax for the rear. I'm aware that both the rears and the woofers in the front should just pop straight in so no worries there but i'm looking for advice on taking off the plastic in front of the wing mirrors so i can mount the tweeters where they are for the 8 speaker premium package - i'd imagine the sound engineers at toyota probably have the best idea on where to put them!! does this plastic just pop off or is it more involved?

While i'm here - i have wired in a 12" sub and 800Watt 4 channel amp in the boot and currently the wire from the battery sneaks in through the front door hinge (yuck!) and the wires are trailing through the car (even worse!), which is the best way to route these cables and how would i go about powering the rear speakers from the amp in the boot?

sorry for the long post - i have looked around to find answers and either my search skills are crap or this hasnt been covered before.

Thanks in advance people
Mark

first things first, welcome!

as for the front componets: I went with infinity capa perfects up front, the sub does not fit right in, needs a spacer because the stock speaker there is 7" so its to big to fit the 6.5. I just cut a thin peace of wood out the diamitar of the stock speaker then cut a hole out of that the diamitar of the new speaker, makes a ring about an inch wide all the way around. as for the tweeters, mine was easy as I had the 8 speaker system to begin with (well had 6 speaker system then bought the premium door panels) that triangle just pops off I think, may have to take the door panel off to do it though, if you dont see a screw head on it then just pull gently and see what happens its easy whatever way it works not involved. are you saying you do have the 8 speaker system stock, then pull the tweeter covers off and then pry/break the stock tweeters of the metel mounting brakets, there very strongly glued if I remember right, My stock tweeter broke in half durring my fight to get it off. once off glue the new tweeter in its place and re asemble.

as for the rears best sound in my opinion would be to leave the rears on the deck power and just use the amp for the sub, because if you connect the rear speakers to the amp they will over power the front and it will not sound very good, also if you turn the volume down on the amp to even it out the sub will go down too. or depending on how much power the speakers can take use the 4 chennel to power the 4 speakers, fronts and rears and get a 2nd amp to run the sub smile.gif

(please overlook spelling errors)

my setup is the capa perfects up from, infinity capa coax in the rears, and a 12" eclipse titanium powered by a 800watt pioneer mono amp (forgot the model number) sounded from what I remember (have not driven it in a year since the motor died)

thanks for the reply...

I have the 4 speaker set up at the moment - i want to put the tweeters in the same place as the 8 speaker. I'll attack with a screwdriver later after i get home from work, luckily it is actually sunny today so i wont get soaked smile.gif

the amp i have has seperate volume and filters for both the 'front' and 'rear' outputs so i'm not worried about overpowering the front speakers with the rear although eventually i would like to get a seperate amp for the 4 speakers and sub (maybe another sub too?! tongue.gif)

The amp i'm using is a US Blaster and sounds *ok* to my pretty uninitiated ears (in terms of in-car hifi anyway). Does anyone have experience with this brand? It was pretty cheap anyway so swapping it out wouldnt be too much of a problem - it helps that i was sent the 800W 4 channel instead of the 300W 2 channel too smile.gif

Also the sub is just a no-name 12" driver although i'd imagine a better quality amp on a sub-par sub is preferable to an all singing all dancing sub on a mediocre amp? Do people go for single brand setups too - would a JBL sub be the best thing to use with their speakers? I'm thinking its probably not necessary with all the filters and what-not on amps these days...

I have another question regarding caps - what sort of total system power is the limit for running without a cap or is a cap always beneficial??

apologies again for the looooooong post!
Cheers

for best looks your gana want to get the stock tweeter covers makes it a lot easyer too.

way back in the day I had a cap, was basicly useless, I would not bother, you'll be fine without it using only the 800watt amp. with another one maybe it would help but in my opinion its a waste because its only going to give you a short burst of extra power but if your bass is going for a while it will not charge back up fast enough anyway. (I'm sure plenty of people would aregue the other way though)
