Hey, I just got my car back last week after I finally found a mechanic that I trust. I'm really picky, and I stopped taking my car to the dealer after I had some mis-diagnosis issues with them many a year ago. This guy's shop is in San Jose, and he specializes in MR2s and All-Tracs. He had actually worked on my MR2 prior to me buying it, so that's how I heard about him. Anyways, I had him replace the clutch and adjust the valves in my Celica. I was just going for the clutch, but I was reading Stef's post and decided I'd better get that done as well. The price is very fair, especially for someone with expertise, and the turn around time was great. Since I live in the North Bay he even volunteered to pick me up from the train station when I went down to get my car. Anyways, after I got my car back, I am now problem free with the transmission. No more jamming gears into first (it was the clutch the whole time) and the shuddering during clutch engagement is totally gone. Here's a link to his website, but it's mainly useful just for contact info, as he's still building it. Oh, he does enginge swaps, and legal ones, too, as you can take a 3S from a 94-95 MR2 and drop them in a Celica of the same/earlier year. He's been through the Cali ref process, to make them 100% legal as well. I'm sure it costs, though.

Two thumbs up

This is very valuable info, with gas the price it is we need to know where we can get the best bang for our bucks! Maybe we could have a list somewhere of recommended shops and techs? Unless we already have one and I have yet to find it! smile.gif

I think that's a great idea, if we could have a running thread with reliable mechanics! I have NO idea who to take my car to if need be, and I'd MUCH rather have a referral than try to make a lucky guess.

Oh, I noticed there were some SoCal replies on here, so I guess I should have been more specific. He's up in San Jose, so it would be quite a long haul for you guys.
