after doing some research (and procrastinating) i have figured out that my ignition signal circuit is messed up.
that, however, is something i don't really have much knowledge of. my car wouldnt start on occasion sometimes but i figured it was just a bad starter because eventually it would start after a few tries. But me being the poor kid that i am, i never got around to fixing it. but anyways could someone please explain to me what needs to be done/ checked in detail?

well i found a working used distributor locally for only 60 bucks, so i snagged that thinking i'll just replace the whole distributor since the igniter could be bad. well it didn't fix the problem. so what the hell else is wrong? someone give me some feedback, i really need to drive.

Are you getting spark? Are you getting fuel?

Yeah it sparks at least. About the fuel part, i'm not sure like the engine cranks and shakes just a little bit and sounds like it will start then it doesn't.

Before this, when it started (after a few attempts) a giant plume of smoke came out the exhaust, and i mean a TON. i don't know if that really has anything to do with this but eh. i might just be forced to tow it somewhere.

Right, and the weird thing is, that never used to happen. All that normally would happen was you would hear the solenoid click when it wouldn't start and you'd just keep turning the key till it started. it never would crank, almost start, and then die. :-/

correct. Pull them and take them to like AutoZone or something and have them check continuity. Not all of the terminals will have continuity with each other. They are about 30 bucks each. I know schucks (kragen or checkers depending on location) carries both relays.

Edit... nvm.. you said you have spark

Can you hear the fuel pump turn on when you turn the car to the "on" position? You won't hear it from inside the car, but if you are in the engine bay and have someone else turn the car on you should hear it.

lol the places to get them are foreign to me tongue.gif
but i'll check that here in a minute. i'm going to check continuity of the ignition switch first. i did some more reading of the BGB manual. woop.

i have to wait for someone else to get home before i check the fuel pump, but it might be hard to hear since my fans run all the time and i dont know how loud the fuel pump would be.

do you know what would cause that plume of smoke to come out of the exhaust upon starting? it only does it if i have to try and start many many times

yep.. pretty much.

check your starter relay.

If you have a manual, I would try to push start it and see what happens.

checked the circuit opening relay, green relay behind the radio. with the car ON it should be getting power/ground on 2 of the prongs and have constant power/ground on the other 2.

that relay is what starts the fuel pump and a few other systems.
