I think I'd upgrade the front speakers if they're not already, put 8" subs in place of the rear speakers and mount the amp under the passenger seat to keep everything out of plain sight.

You can mount the sub in the rear left hand side of the trunk and mount the amp in the same location on the other side.

I agree that you should try updating the interior speakers first. I suggest purchasing a set of component speakers and tweeters and have them hooked to an amp. If you want more, you can go for a nice 10" sub and a conservative amp.

get the premium doors

put an 8" sub in the bottom hole where the front speakers normally are, but a nice set of 5.24" speakers in the mids hole, and the tweeters either on your A pilar, or on the mirror cover

stevenson has this setup and it sounded pretty nice from what i heard, has enough oomph to give you good low end sound for bass heavy songs, and still keeps everything clear and crisp. plus lets ya salvage what trunkspace you have

cheapest.. is to get an 8" sub or two and an amp and stick them in the trunk, front side, off to one of the corners. if going in the trunk id suggest a bit louder of a sub, and sacrificing clarity wont matter too much as the car and seats will deaden alot of the sound anyways compared to open air between you and the sub

That's actually the setup I've got... I just kinda figured w/a convertible one would want to make it as hard as possible to actually get to anything incase of theft or whatever... but in this case, a nice 10" sub or even a pair of good 8" subs in the trunk w/the amp mounted to the back of the rear seat in the trunk would be a reasonable setup without costing too much and maybe leaving some money over for the speaker upgrade up front.

if you wanna do something small i would go for a single 12 in a ported box in the trunk with an amp, and you are right about having to have more because of a convertable it is very hard to get hard hitting sound espically with the top down as you loose all of the presure, and if you are looking at 8"s i would look into DD 1508 or sound splinter rl-p 8"s they are very nice drivers and can get really loud when done right
