I think the new fines for being on a cell phone while driving are a joke. $20 the first time and $50 everytime after, and u can not be pulled over for just that alone. I think u should be pulled over just for that and the fine should be $100 the first time $250 the second and $300 and a point the third. I just think too many people do it and even on the hand free set its still just as distracting.

yeah its goes into effect in July of this year in cali. Funny bcuz in most states that have this law there is also a law against texting while driving, i believe there is no law on the books with regards to texting in cali yet.

And yet I've seen people using laptops in their passenger seat, eating breakfast, reading the paper, doing make up...scary because talking on a cell is the least dangerous of all these.

yeah it impossible to legislate it all. So i say the CHP should be able to just write tickets for imparied driving if they r doing things like that. I was nearly killed buy some soccer mom in a mini van that ran a red light bcuz it looked like she was eating.

I'm usually relaxed on these, and would say its not more dangerous than anything else, but on alot of occasions I see cars doing stupid things, and the drivers are on the phones...I guess they're not good drivers to start.... but talking on the phone surely doesn't help!

Yeah you have no idea how many (Not trying to be sexiest) women driving large vehicles almost ran me as well as others, from my eyes, off the road because they were talking on their cell phone. Even passing up red lights (which I know, people do that all the time but with a cell phone it is more of a distraction to others it appears). I have had men who were driving and talking slowing down traffic or nearly causing accidents as well. I agree with you dude, the fine should be MORE!

I agree that does seem like a pretty small fine. My problem is actually getting a license. It's way too easy to get one. I think drivers should have to take a windy course or something to show they have enough skill. I'm not saying all, but there are a lot of old people out there that just can't flat out drive. I dont' mind them going slow, but they merge w/o looking, veer between lanes, stuff like that. It's pretty scary. I also watched an old man take the sight test, he failed the first two and finally got the 3rd line right, and his license was renewed...What? DMV should be stricter

People should have to take a "Common Sense" test and or a "Psych Test", along with the rest of the tests and steps taken for driving. Courses should be taken regardless of age in order to obtain a license, not just the tests, prior to taking these written exams. Because as a driver, it means you are responsible for yourself and others on the road. I don't want drunks, idiots, and the lot on my streets.

Here in Australia it's been illegal to use a phone whilst driving for a while now. Like maybe a few years. I'm pretty sure the fines and stuff are pretty nasty too. The stupid thing is that I still see so many tools on the phone whilst driving. My brother's friend txts while driving whilst I was in his car one time. He was swerving over the road and I told him to cut it out cause I was worried for my safety!
