hey guys/gals. i was wondering what some of you all know about newport news VA. my gf is going to possibly be taking a job with Lockheed Martin and wants me to move with her.

To be honest i dislike virginia with a passion (no offense to the natives) and i am already quite content in charlotte nc.
I also heard of newport news being nicknamed "bad news"

can anybody give me their personal opinion?

i live in newport news. it's not so bad, but it definately has its downsides. the economy is slightly better than charlotte and things are a bit cheaper. if she's working for LM, why not move to yorktown??

I dont know exactly where she would be moving, but you say yorktown is closer? what kind of area is newport news in general?

newport news overall is a upper mid class environment overall but it has its areas of slum and its areas of upper high class. yorktown is a stones throw from newport news (right next door actually) and the cost of living is slightly cheaper but its a much nicer environment.

Kiln Creek and the new downtown areas of NN are real nice. There is a pretty good mix overall, like Jazz said. I second the commentary on Yorktown. It's a much nicer setting, the actual town has its own little beach on the York river, it's peaceful, and it's not off-the-charts-expensive to live there. I'd seriously consider moving there if I weren't stuck with an overpriced house in Va Beach mad.gif
