Left my card reader @ home... but will have some pix to post tomorrow!

Got a T1i for my b-day/hanukkah/xmas, looking for recommendations from y'allz experienced users as to a good starter zoom lens for it. Stock kit lens is an 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS, which is fine point-and-shoot range but I'm looking for more.

Noob here.
Some amazing & inspirational work in here guys... keep up the good work. smile.gif

Here's a few of mine... this is a fairly new hobby to me. I'm currently going to school for graphic & industrial design, and had to take a very basic photog course last semester, so I've only scratched the surface technically speaking; I only know enough to get by.

Most of these are taken with an Xti w/ the cheap 17-55 lens that came with it. In the middle of fall, I finally got my hands on the Canon 100mm 2.8 macro... really haven't learned how to use it to it's full potential just yet. C&C is welcomed.

My 6gc: first (lame) attempt at panning.

Congrats:)
It really depends on what you plan to use it on. I had a 28-135 IS for the money it is decent, you should be able
to pick up a lightly used one for around 250.00 on craigslist or potn. If you want a little more reach the 70-300 is a
good choice, I haven't priced them much so not sure. I only own 2 lenses atm and my 100-400L is a friggen beast
I can not say enough good stuff about it. I have also seen people that swear by the 70-200L f4. The thing that is so great about
the canon L glass is the value it retains. I had a 70-200L f2.8 IS, I bought used for 1450.00 I used it for about 9 months
and sold it for 1450.00, it cost me $52.00 dollars for shipping and insurance to use it for 9 months.

I have a 70-200 f/2.8L IS and I love it. If you want a cheap, fast lens grab a 50mm 1.8.

fredmiranda.com or photography-on-the-net are where I look for used gear.

I hope I didn't come off like I didn't love the 70-200 2.8 IS, it was a great lens, I just bought it for
my sons night football games and he quit playing so I sold it. My other son shortly after
took up basketball which it would have been perfect for. kindasad.gif

I didn't take it like that at all. It's a superb lens.

I'd really like a 35 f/1.4L right now, but I'm not willing to part with any of my current lenses for it. I've considered skipping a mortgage payment, but I feel that's not a good idea.

I totally appreciate the feedback on the lenses, thanks! It's amazing shooting with this camera, I feel like a kid with giant, unwieldy crayons or something, it's like learning all over again (which I appreciate)

I've looked at 70-300 lenses, I was happy to see it as a recommendation too smile.gif I'm definitely, at this point, looking for a budget sort of lens as a starter; I can always upgrade as my experience grows. So what about brands? Stick with Canon only, or are there others worth considering? I'm happy to stay w/Canon, but I want to know what my options are. I'd rather have a good quality somewhat limiting lens than a crappy cheap-o knockoff that claims more than it can deliver.

Keeping it on topic... this is a shot I took in December when we had a cold snap and Multnomah Falls (I think it's one of the tallest?) froze. Okay not tallest, but second tallest year-round waterfall in the US wink.gif

I love Sigma & Tamron lenses, great for half the cost of canon's goodies!
