The saving grace of the new Batman movies is that the producers, as they did with the first Batman, worried first about getting a script which actually delved into the psychology of Batman, and actors who could carry it off.

In large part, that's why Batman has remained popular to this day -- he's relatable, human, flawed. So typically are his villains, people pushed or damaged to the point where they lash out.

Michael Keaton excels at portraying the tortured soul, as does Christian Bale (The Machinist, anyone?). That's what also made Nicholson's performance as the Joker so great -- you believed the sadism was accompanied by humanity, albeit a twisted version of the desire for love.

All the best superhero films have been good films, with strong acting. Inevitably, the franchises fall when the names and explosions become the focus. Hell, that's even true of Bond, which is why Casino Royale was such a revival for the series.

I'd agree with everything you said except the bit about Christian Bale - IMO he is not even an actor at all. He "acts" the same in everything I've seen him in: Batman Begins, American Psycho, Equilibrium - every one the exact same. Altho it's perfect for Equilibrium and Batman especially I wouldn't exactly call him an actor.
Sorry about the CB rant - I've had this discussion many times with friends.

So much misinformation in this thread. Erik's posts are credible.

The trailer was done like that as an homage to the first.

You think he's the same in Equilibrium and American Psycho? Are you dense? Have you ever seen American Psycho? What about the Machinist?

I own American Psycho, Batman Begins and Equilibrium. It's just my opinion that he he "acts" the same in every movie. he's like MR NoPersonality.
Dense? That's pretty funny. laugh.gif

I just think that they are making the movies similar, but darker. Its a way of making it more "real" and not fantasy.

Orignal batman movies - The first one was so good because it devoloped the characters well which led you to believe and enjoy their performances.
All the others focused more on putting people in the seats (hence all the big name grabbing, and special effects) which led to pretty enjoyable movies but not really good movies.

Batman Begins is a revamped start to the whole Batman series. They spent a good amount of time deveolping the characters and made their characters real and more believeable. Which made the movie more enjoyable and re-watchable, not to mention the killer effects:)
Dark Kinght looks to have gone the same way. If Health Leadger got so wrapped into the sadistic nature of the Joker that he couldnt sleep at night(eventually leading to his OD on sleeping pills) then you know that they developed the characters as equally well as if not better than Batman Begins. It also looks like they totally developed Harvey Dent AKA Two Face, unlike the previous movie, which(depending on where they end this movie) will make for a killer 3rd movie, if they take it that far.

The reason why they changed the name away from "Batman...." to "The Dark Kinght" is because when Jack Nicholson signed the contracts for the first Batman movie he had it wrote into the contract that everytime Warner Brothers made a movie with "Batman" in the title he would get royalties on the movie. The name change does not signify that they are going away from the comic book path of the series.

But i think the name change suits the "new" batman movies as IMO they are much better than the orginals.
Who knows what they will name the third one though...

The "new" Batman series beats the old ones hands down... Just my .02
