Can we please stop with theses street racing posts? Your acting like street racing is the worst possibley thing you could do. There are alot of things worse. why dont you post threads about how druggies are idiots? or Murdering a family member? i mean you probably see street race related deaths in the news about 5 or 6 times a year if that. we all understand strret racing is bad. but some of us dont do it to be cool. Im going to be honest. on occation i race. but i do it with no one in the car but me and late at night. i dont care if any of you think less of me. im the same person. Im sure all of you have done something bad like that in your life. Your acting like street racers are the most horrible people in the world. in my area some of them are the nicest people ive met. its just something they do. we dont do it on small 2 lane roads with cars parked ont eh side. they are all more open and plenty of room for error. So yes street racing isnt the smartest thing to do but posting threads like this isnt gonna make people stop doing it. so why waste time? if you hate racers so much then go talk to your damn mayor and sort sh!t out with him. Love me or hate me.

It's not that dude. It's that chance that when something actually does end up happening, like a wreck, injury or death, we look at why it happened and realize it isn't worth putting people at risk. Death of a person, for a cheap thrill. It is really selfish. Now, does it happen? Am I guilty of it from the past? Yes! I admit to doing it on the freeway when no one else but me and the other driver are on an open freeway with not a single car in sight. Once there is a visual of anything, it is then ceased. But that doesn't justify my actions or say it is ok. I should not drive when I have had even a few drinks, and that is when my judgment is poor and I do that. I know better still, yet I have did it.

Anyways, that is besides the point. The point is the MEDIA focuses on this crap and it affects everyone. So you want to race, you wreck your car and no biggie to you. Well people see that, police and media. Then everyone who loves the hobby/sport is then targeted, even when they are innocent, and we all hurt over it. The law comes down even harder, and then you are hassled. Then you wish deep down inside there was something you can do, because you love it so much, but you don't want to get something taken away that you dreamed of owning or worked so hard to get, because you will be convicted of intent to race over the modifications you did, simply because you didn't want to settle for the average, every day car.

That is what this is about. Alcohol is worse. Drugs are worse. But modified cars are easier to crack down on with a possibility of catching someone of either influence from mentioned in this paragraph. Remember, cops have a quota to meet. They catch you, more money for them. Not that they are @$$es, but they have a job to do and we have a responsibility for our passions.

One more thing to remember:

Nobody wants to take responsibilities on their own. Suicide? They blame the music. That is why it is up to us who love what we do, to be responsible and not ruin it for others. Because when a death or any crime is related to what it is we love, then they come after all of us, not just you.

yes raceing with no other cars in sight is how it happends around here. if there is a car in sight im usually the one to brake and get on with my buisness. but i havent raced in about 1 month n' a half. and i am done due for reason for college. UTI doesnt tollerate it and i dont feel like giving up my dream for like u said a "cheap thrill". I just get angry at posts like this because the bash on street racers and they arent all bad people. they make seem like they are.

Edit - this was a response to Sever's post like two back.
You're also what? 16-18 somewhere in there right? How can you think you're qualified as a driver to avoid fatally injuring someone? Come on - that's a lifetime skill.
In Houston there have always been areas where the cops will sit down the street and watch people street race on abandoned roads mostly in business parks. I grew up street racing [Mostly back there]. So I can sympathise but D-Man had a good point earlier - if someone kills my kids while their street racing they better be damn sure they kill me too cause I don't care what happens - that person is dead on the scene if I can move.

That's not the street racing we see in major cities where street racing is a problem like LA, Miami, and Houston. We get retards who put mommy's civic into the back of a minivan carrying children on westheimer which is like our busiest weekend night strip - Look it up. It happened right down the street from me a few years back. The dad lived but the family all died except I think one of the three kids.
Sad and then we wonder why we get followed by cops or california can't have mods.

BTW - Of course I don't think less of you.

the point is we all have done or do it its just if you do it with cars on the street around you and not in a completely deserted area you should be kicked in the twigs and berrys

If idiot druggies and people killing their family members was relevant to this board, it'd get posted (i.e. a pregnant girl STREET RACING and killing her unborn child).

But since street racing and warning of its dangers is what is relevant here, it's the topic of discussion.

There's your /thread

Murder implies intent, it won't go for murder.

murder = homicide

causing death by street raicing = reckless homicide --- roughly 2-8 years in jail

therefore, murder is technically accurate.....but I know what you mean.

Murder doesn't = homicide. Homicide is the killing of one person by another. Murder is the killing of another person with intent. All murders are homicides but not all homicides are murders. So while this is a homicide, the drivers certainly didn't intend to kill.

Am I missing something here?

The story said it was more of "road rage" than street racing that caused this to happen.

No, that's the sentence that I am specifically responding to. It says that this may have been road rage and NOT of street racing.

I don't advertise either one, but it would seem to me that road rage is the greater of the two evils...

the ABC knew damn well it was not street racing, but there is, and has been such a fear and hate campaign against street racing they new it would lead to it being blown out of proportion. Its funny bcuz we all know street racing is bad but we have all done it. And there is such a huge stereotype with it. For every kid that does it there is some 50 something guys in his vette that does it too. So i hate when people try 2 act like their $hit dont stink and bad mouth people for talking about it. Get a life and no matter what, bad things will happen weather your a bad person or not. Thats life.

glad you do it in the middle of no where. "Been around racing your whole life" <--laugh.gif you are barely out of diapers. Yes you might be a "good" driver. You still have not a single idea about racing in a driving environment, I'm glad your uncle has been to a racing school, YOU have not, you don't have the seat time, you don't have the instructor time and you have A LOT to learn about actual driving in a racing environment.

Get yourself out to a track day...a weekend is like $130 and I'm talking ROAD COURSE not a drag strip (which is only $20 for a test and tune and depending on a sponsorship night maybe up to $50 max). You don't learn driving in a straight line. At a track day you will get seat time on a course, and you will get instruction from a PROFESSIONAL instructor...not your "has been to a racing school" uncle.

I've been racing for many many years both 2 and 4 wheels, anyone who races/does track days at a track will tell you......The street racing crowd no matter where you are IS looked down upon, its irresponsible, immature, and dangerous it doesn't matter how "nice" you are....how do I know? I've been there.

The article also didn't talk about if street racers were "nice" or "good people"...so try and stay on topic here.

They are charging with murder because of the action involved. It would be the same as playing Russian Roulette, actually it is the same just a different weapon of choice. You didn't pull the trigger but you took part in an event which by part of your action lead to someone's death. You would be charged for murder, since by the "what if" analysis, if you were not taking part in the event they would not have died.

This is one of my friends he is a good driver....he drives on the track.

Hmm I think the problem with going to track days for us youngsters is proximity and money. Every race track available to me is close to 3 hours away and most don't host many open track days (because of liability insurance reasons) and several places are being closed down because of the their lack of income and the cost of maintenance. I wouldn't be able to afford a track day either.

Although, I've never and probably will never race another car on the road, I do enjoy spirited driving which here is punished as street racing ( >50km/h over the posted speed limit.)

I know street racing is dumb, especially in the city, but every government's response to the "street racing epidemic" is half assed and not going to solve anything. Cars keep getting faster and faster, speed limits keep getting lower, insurance keeps getting higher and more tracks close down every year.

What the proper response should be is financial support for the tracks that are left and for some smaller road courses to be opened on the city limits because to actually succeed at taking automobile racing off the streets the racers need some place to go.

I'd check on that.....in VA we have a very tough group of guys nearly dedicated to this cause alone.
Also in CA i know that the police partner with local tracks to have nights that kids can come and race, and even race against the police. They also shut down some stadium parking lots occasionally and run races there.

Yes most tracks are 3+ hours away (They are that far from myself as well) but thats just part of the game, they need to be that far out because of the space/noise/accommodations they take up/need. Save your money slowly and even do it 1 time a year if thats all you can, the benefits from it are huge.

and yes there are smaller "road courses" inside city limits, this is called "AUTO-X" and its a cheap (much less than $100) day events and are lots of fun.

The bottom line is there are options, there are cheap options.....its do you chose to look for or create those options.

Hahaha well I figured Cali would have something going. They have so many tracks that are all world renowned. So I'll retract that. I was thinking more about New York and Ontario than anywhere else really. Although I bet there are a lot of other places that have this problem but aren't responding well to it.

I would love to race the cops, my cousin is one of them. I have not been able to find any auto-x around here but I did find a few rally clubs, the issue is that I would need a second car, I am not rallying my DD smile.gif. That's about the only option around here, for anything else I'd need to travel at least 4 hours.

By far the cheapest option (though its questionably illegal) is hosting parking lot events, which I have tried to organize between my friends. Its pretty sketchy though, and it might constitute "street racing" in the eyes of the police. By the way, does anyone know the legality of setting up a cone course in a parking lot?
