It'll work but there are a few differences. The 6GC will have a knock sensor and the 5GC won't but IDK if the boss is drilled and tapped for it. The tranny will work fine.

I really think you can just swap in the 5s and run your factory 5s ecu. You will just no have knock. I am unsure if it will throw a code or no though. Unless you want to run the 90-93 5s ecu.

I think the car will maybe run a bit wrong cause surely the ECU uses the knock signal to control on the fly timing to a degree [Otherwise why have the damn thing really]. I saw pics of one just today on here - I'll get the pic BRB.

Thats a hell of a deal. any rust? 500 bucks... wow. Why not invest in a better motor? Ma What are your plans? maybe a 97-01 camry 5s. What are your plans for the car? Just a DD?

If thats the case then get the right ecu for the 5th gen 5s motor.

Or add the knock sensor if the block is already tapped - I know the boss is there from the casting.
Here's the pic:

See it under the #3 Cyl? You normally can't see it this well cause it's up under the Intake manifold on the back of the engine.

What part of ohio are you in? I have a camry 5sfe with ~80k miles you can have for $100. I was getting ready to put it on craigslist for more, but of course I have to give you the 6gc.net discount!

Damn that's a deal and it'll have the knock sensor boss drilled for sure.

There are actually a few more differences than just lack of knock sensor (because I believe 93's have knock sensors). When Shannon (supershannon77) blew up her motor in her 5th gen she swapped in a 5s out of a 1999. We had to remove all the 5th gen timing stuff, electronics, etc. off the the old motor and reinstall a lot of it onto the 6th gen motor. I dont know to much about it because we had a shop do it, and had our good friend Jeremy walk the shop through it. So the answer is yes, you can use a 5th gen 5sfe......but its a bit of work. Basically what I got from it, everything that is on your 6th gen 5sfe, swap over to the 5th gen 5sfe. You are going to use your 6th gen harness and ECU etc. For what it is worth, I wouldn't bother with the 5th gen motor for a few reasons:

1. Its older
2. Odds are higher mileage
3. Must swap over current 6th gen parts to make it run
4. Not much of a savings over buying a 1994-1999 5sfe
5. (for what it is worth, since its coming out anyway...anything from a 1998-1999 would be your best best...factory metal headgasket, and usually the lowest mileage)
