Wow, I nearly forgot about this thread... My Fender is a middle-of-the-road guitar. It's closer to the low end, of course, but it's still decent. It has a warm sound to it, but I can still get some fret buzz if I'm jamming a little too hard. It's very forgiving though. For $200 new, you can't go wrong. But then again, you can't go wrong for $60 either! Agreed with the statement about expensive guitars- NEVER take one out somewhere like that. They are really only good for jamming at home in the best conditions for a few people or at a concert where there is so much amplification that the subtlest of nuances can be picked up. As far as muting strings goes, there are hundreds of songs out there that you can learn. But how I got my best practice was by finding a few chord progressions and putting my own strumming rhythm to them. Kinda like writing my own song. That way, I could practice whatever I wanted and however much of it I wanted to without someone recognizing the song and telling me that I'm playing it wrong. Glad to hear you're picking it up and moving right along! Don't stop practicing!

Wow! didnt realize this thread was this old already but I'm in the market for my first guitar now and thought about this thread on here.
Here goes, I'm looking for my first acoustic guitar to learn on and I'm wondering if you guys have more advice on if i should get a beater or invest in something pretty nice. I realize if its something that ive invested a bit of money in there is going to be more motivation to play it and really learn on it. Price isnt too much of an issue to me as long as its under 500 i dont care. Its my new years resolution this year to learn how to play as ive wanted to for a while now. I'll be playing mostly country music and am looking for a guitar to bring out to the fire and jam out with some friends also any thoughts on the electric/acoustics? -------------------- -Brian

I'd spend no more than $250 for a starter guitar. You can get a decent guitar for that, just to learn on and practice with. Plus, crap happens. Remember when you first got your driver's license, how you accidentally curbed it a few times here or there, your parking wasn't always perfect, etc.? Playing the guitar is the same way. When you first get one, little accidents will happen. If you've spent a lot of money, then you've accidentally beat up a good instrument. But for $250, you're getting a guitar that will sound alright, look good, and be a great beginner guitar. I recommend Alvarez or Fender for a decent starter guitar.

The Fender plays and sounds a little bit better than the Alvarez, but you can't go wrong with either one. Of course, there are better guitars you can buy, and for $500, you can get a decent guitar. The most important thing is just to have fun ![]() -------------------- "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others labored hard for." -Socrates.
