Sounds like the Linkage Cable. Might be the bushings. SpeedSource has some after market bushings tht are like 29 bucks.

Maybe the assembly itself is getting too old.

on the shifter assembly there is a pin with a keeper that hold the shifter in place.

there should be a keeper holding it in place, see if it's still there.

wow no there isnt anything like that on my shift maybe someone stole it..or it might have broke off..would that be one reason why..when i put the car in reverse the shifter doesnt even move out of its spot..or side to side at all..maybe ill look at your will and see but yeah i dont see anything that looks like that batman...would that cause my shifter to move side to side in every gear but reverse??

Yeah John, I do have it. Sammie does too. Its like a pin that goes though and the keeper is a plate?

Yeah, its like a CLIP/ WASHER. It holds that rod going through in place and the top part of the shifter firm.

found this and the red things are the source of the problem. currently seeking a cheaper used one because the nut holding the bushing down just doesnt want to come off. it just spins and spins kindasad.gif the bolt stays put but the nut keeps on spinning frown.gif so im seeking the whole assembly on the bottom right of the diagram.
