I have 5zigen fn01rc rims 17x8 +35 offset all the way around... and have 245/40 falken azenis st115 tires in the front and 235/40 in the rear. car is lower on tein springs and I have no rubbing issues

no rubbing issues because of a decent offset. drop doesn't matter for rubbing as long as rims have proper offset and width, then again you would have to have really big tires to accomplish that.

so the extra half inch lift from 225/45 doesn't affect handling much? seems like the higher center of gravity would have an impact on performance. Is a +40 offset wheel too high to run 225/45 w/o rub?

WAY more grip with the larger tires.
there is no downside to the larger tires, IMO.
its better all around.
handleing, ride comfort, apperance, is all better with the 225/45's for me.
