Hey i took my hatch off awhile ago to replace it with another from the previous year. however, for your question, that little rubber tube thing looks like the tube for the rear windshield wiper fluid nozzle. if it's in the middle of the car then thats definitly what it is cuz i had such a hard time getting it off, i almost ripped it. but the wire connectors i'd imagine goes to the 3rd brake light, and maybe rear defroster. the 96 to 97 changed the wires for the defroster..But good luck with your hatch. i still have not been able to get it right so that it "pops" up when i turn the key or pull the trunk release. and its a green hatch on a gray car haha

so after i removed my hatch, i've been going to town on removing that horrible, god forsaken tint. i've got about 1/7 removed! its just so hot outside, and im using steam to remove the tint, it works really well! just melts and peels away the tint, but that glue smells horrible!! ah i'll keep updating on tint, and if anyone wants to know how i removed my tint, i can explain that in detail too
