So has anyone ever been in Jury duty? I just got a letter this week saying that I have to appear in court as a Juror sometimes in the next month time frame for 3 months. Which will screw up my schedules since Im taking Summer classes and having to fix someone else car. Anyone know what to expect, wear, and bring?

you can only delay the inevitable for 1 year. even with proof of school, pregnancy or financial burden, you can only postpone for a year.

it goes like this,
1. register over phone
2. call automated number weekend before
3. show up if they need you to, otherwise report to work
4. call next day and repeat step 3.
5. if youve reached friday of that week and they still dont need you, youre done (for the next 2 years)

if you're needed, report to location. wait to be selected amongst pool of other jurors. if you're not selected all day, youre done (for the next 2 years)

if your selected, join others to be a candidate trial juror. if they decide your an unbaised juror, you get to decide on the trials outcome. report to court as long as it goes on.

i dont know what 3 month time frame you're talking about. its 1 week. thats it. unless your picked for a trial, it wont last longer than 5 days. you might not even have to report to court if the automated phone excuses you.

expect to be there all day if picked. wear comfortable non gang affiliated clothing, do not bring anything they would think to be a weapon. no scissors, swiss army knives, etc.

everything is described on the juror summons letter. read it and become familiar with everything.

i got one last week too.

last served jury duty 5 years ago

That's not entirely true. I was "on call" for 3 weeks. Meaning I'd call that Sunday - they'd say not needed this week, call back Sunday, then they'd repeat that for another week. On the 3rd week I was actually called in, but wasn't selected. I don't think they like psych majors.

I got a summons for today actually. Friday I checked online and it said thanks but no thanks. I have to check again tonight to see if they need me. This is probably the case for the rest of the week. Its my first time being called.

If you go they'll ask you a bunch of questions, like have you ever been the victim of a crime, do you know anybody in law enforcement, do you feel you could be an impartial judge based on these things etc. I mentioned my father was in probation, I know 2 or 3 cops, family friend is a judge, grandfather was chief of police. I didn't get selected. But there was a retired cop whose been on several trials in the past and they selected him. There was also a lawyer who actually has a case pending in front of the very same judge - and they picked him. So it's really strange what these lawyers look at sometimes. You could just flat out lie that you can't be impartial based on something and they'll dismiss you.

that sucks. i wouldn't be able to take more than a week of calling in and "maybe" appearing in court

It did suck, it sucked very much.

But I did get paid $90 to go down to the courthouse and give them a day of my time, while getting paid at work too.

Its a safety feature so that people like you don't end up killing themselves or everyone around them.

I'm pretty sure if you said you were atheist in Texas they'll string you up right there in the courtroom.

LMAO laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif I somewhat fit that description minus the last part. Anyways, my letter states that I have to be on the juror duty for 3 freakin months. Might as well tell them that I'm in school and can prob not attend. Then again the judge will prob care less. I will just have to suck it up and go in.
