Wait - 4A-FTE? That would imply a 4A-GE bottom end with a 7A-FE top? why?
Nice car tho - too much color going on for me

Oh wow - never heard of it. Damn that must be the worst possible engine that would drop into our car. 7A crappy head on a 1.6 non-stroked bottom end - Craptastic biggrin.gif [However if you look at what I said it ought to be above - guess I was right - just didn't know it was a stock configuration]

4afe is the parent to the 7afe... the 4afe "evolved" to become the 7afe. 4afe's were common in the 90s corollas, Geo Prism and I *think* the 5th gen Celica STs. (not positive about that one though) It's a tiny, low HP motor that just runs and runs and runs for freaking EVAR.

Sadly what a horrible waste of money. And yes the 4afe came in the 5th gen STs - mad power at 103hp IIRC. (second Celica was a '91 ST - sadly I think my '77 GT was faster)

its not THAT bad, but it is not that great either. its right on par with the honda 1.6 econo offerings of the time, the mid 80's to early 90's. it became dated quickly into the 90's which is why the 7afe was introduced with more tq over a wide rpm range. 4afe has 105hp and 105tq, peak hp at 5800 and peak tq at 4400 vs the 7afe 110hp at 5800 and peak 115tq at 2800. the 4afe is less peppy in traffic but returns great highway mpg.

the 4afe when it was introduced in 1987 was one of the few 1.6L engines on the market to make more than 100hp in an economy car, its based off the even older 4a-f which was carbed and was based off the 4a which dates to around 1980.
