Cause people cant react right. I had this happen to me when I was driving this POS loaner car (suzuki aero). I went to brake and found out that I wasnt braking, but instead was going faster. So I popped the car in N and slightly applied parking brake. Flashed hazards and pulled over.

Yeah, worst thing you can do is just hit the key to shut it off.. rather hurt the vehicle than die.

And, it's what they get for using an automatic and not knowing how to drive!

And this raises the question...if you popped the transmission into neutral to stop it from powering the wheels, what would happen to the engine for bouncing off the rev limiter until you could turn it off?

nothing really. the engine will just rev and then shut off. but if that ever happens, you'll need to turn the key back to ON so the steering wheel doesn't lock up as you turn towards the shoulder of the road (or turn in to a parking lot), and brace both hands firmly on the wheel and be ready to stomp on the brakes cuz you'll be out of power brakes and power steering.

So it kills itself to stop the engine from grenading? Didn't know that our cars had that kind of feature.

Speaking of the accessories, my ignition seems to be finicky...I usually park, turn it off, then turn it back on to ACC to make sure my windows and sunroof are closed...but then if I turn the key even slightly over ACC and towards ON, the engine will fire back up.

what i meant was the car will rev if you put it into neutral and will just stay at redline until you shut it off.. there's no shut off feature.
