Anyone know what price range a SW20 MR2 goes for? Any recommendations for the AW11 vs the SW20 if you maybe suggest one over the other? I want a sexy daily driver that I can have for a later project (because even just a stock GT-Four in the future is good enough for me as far as a complete project goes, unless tempted to take it beyond that), and I want it to be a Toyota.
Why am I looking for another car? Well here's the deal. Today I did a compression test today in class and discovered that my car has a dead cylinder. All the readings were an average of 190 with one cylinder giving me a reading of 25 and leaks. So on Tuesday, I am going to run a wet test to determine if it is the valves (which I am praying for) or the piston rings (which will make want to get another car so I can park my car and take my time on it without having to make repairs of daily driving for exterior damage and such as it is very expensive and I can rebuild the engine, this is my only car). So what do you guys think? This post has been edited by Random_Stranger: Oct 1, 2009 - 3:38 AM -------------------- 91 MR2 Turbo SW20, 92 MR2 Turbo SW20, 95 Celica GT ST204

You don't want a SW20 for a DD - they require some fairly regular and exstensive maintenance
A friend of mine just sold his MR2T cause he just can't bear to fix it anymore AW11's are less powerful but alot more reliable for DD [you can speak to Ripley about that] -------------------- ![]() ENGINE: '93 RC 3S-GTE/WRC CT-20b [18-20PSI] PERF: TRD/HKS/ARP/NGK/MSD/ACT/Blitz/STRI/APEX'i/TwosRus/GReddy/Magnaflo/KOYO SUSP: Tein/Bilstein/SusTech/ INT: SS-III SEATS/Toyota Hyper Sports EXT: WRC/TRD/404 Its a safety feature so that people like you don't end up killing themselves or everyone around them. I also heard (just for some debate or comments) that AW11's are actually preferred in drag racing purposes for some reason, which I believe is probably because they might be lighter as I checked on the MR2 SW20 and have discovered that surprisingly, they way in the 2700's (nearly 2800lbs) in weight. But is this an MR2 Turbo that requires more attention? Because I am quite happy with daily driving a 5sfe, as I would end up doing a swap regardless of what engine is in there (a lot further down the road though, my Celica IS my No.1 Priority). My friend has a 91 N/A and he said the only problem he has ever had with it is the synchros are starting to go out.
But you'll find that the MR2 is a much more fun car to drive than the Celica, and then you'll put the Celica on the back burner. So with that said - I want your hood, bumper, and headlights. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

LOL Nah, everyone is telling me that. That if I move to anything else, I might lose focus, but trust me, I have my heart set on this. This car is responsible for so much of my life right now and where I am headed in life, I owe it all to my Celica. If anything, I wouldn't mind getting another one and swapping things over to complete the project, however I have came this far to turn away from it. I couldn't do that. I love her too much. If you see me go performance on an MR2 beyond just suspension and rims...... Then we may have a problem. But I honestly don't see myself going beyond that. She is my top priority, my love, my life. -------------------- 91 MR2 Turbo SW20, 92 MR2 Turbo SW20, 95 Celica GT ST204

I have an SW20 for sale... but probably not what you're looking for. It's n/a and needs a motor... haha... but it is the hardtop, which are much lighter and much more difficult to find.
That said... SW20's are only really popular for making ass loads of power fairly easily. They are, IMO, the worst of the duces in terms of handling, or even simply driving. To me, they are poorly balanced, too ass heavy and unpredictable, hardly desirable traits if the car is meant to be a sports car (you know... going fast through curves). But going straight would be fine. Price-wise... MR2 turbos have inflated lately. For a good one, expect to pay around 5000... n/a's can be found anywhere from 2.5-4 k... Well I would be happy with even just a N/a that I can get for $2k or less. Kinda what I was looking at. I wouldn't mind a fairly good conditioned AW11, although I don't want to spend no more than $800 on one of those, even though I know the resale value is a bit up there on those as well. Heck, with that said, I wouldn't spend more than $1300 on an AE86, because I think those are overpriced (damn cartoons)... -------------------- 91 MR2 Turbo SW20, 92 MR2 Turbo SW20, 95 Celica GT ST204

you want a turbo mr-2 for a daily driver? are you a midget or just insane? Doesn't have to be turbo, it could be N/A too. What's wrong with that? It is just so I can take my time on my Celica and do things right on here. Once she becomes a Stock GT-Four, then I will decide if it is worth keeping up on her or moving onto the MR2 or something else. I like other cars, but I own so much Toyota stuff that I would hate to be caught driving anything else. Toyota makes up 80% of my wardrobe and you will never catch me without something "Toyota" on me. So yeah. AW11, is probably one of the most funnest cars to drive. Its like a go-kart, easily drifts and is actually pretty fast.

I think it is really ugly, but can look nice at certain angles too. I have to see how much I have in October, might go with either one at this point. What may have to be done to my 5sfe engine just to keep my car running strong will have an effect on this too. -------------------- 91 MR2 Turbo SW20, 92 MR2 Turbo SW20, 95 Celica GT ST204

Ok guys, a guy wants to sell me a Rolling SHell 91 MR2 N/A that needs a new engine (I want a turbo engine still) and it needs a few minor things such as a door handle, inner door panels, and needs the window regulators or such installed in it. Has a salvaged title, clean body (appears to be fixed and from the seller has been fixed, he bought it as is to swap a turbo engine and never got around to it). Anyways, got wheels and such, and he is willing to sell it to me for $500. What do you think? Good deal? Or should I wait til I have $4 or $5k and just buy an MR2 Turbo? Either way, it is going to cost around the same. I am only willing to put in money for "smog", fixing the windows, installing turbo motor (if need be), and a paint job. So what do you think? I need to give an answer by 4pm tomorrow.

I would say pass dude. This is gonna be your DD as you've stated above, why invest money you could/should be investing in your 6g as you said?
It wouldn't be a bad buy if you find the parts cheap and do all the work yourself, BUT what if you run into problems once you swap? And how about the issues it could have now that maybe the owner hasn't stated, just think about it a couple times. That will just add on to what it already has, and more sooner then later you will come to see your new project will be the MR rather then the 6g. Oh and it has a salvageable title, so when you try to sell it, your not gonna have much interest and if you do expect to get lowballed extra low. my .02 -------------------- 1996 Toyota Celica ST 25th Anni. Salvage cars are nightmares, especially considering its age. I know from experience. I would just save up for a good one. Just my opinion though.

I felt like such an ass, but the guy was really understanding and cool with it. He knows he can sell it, and he agrees that if my Celica is my priority project, why meddle with this one? It was a super killer deal, although for a daily driver, I need something that has a clean title for full coverage so if worst comes to worst, I get something back. My celica is a salvaged title and once it is a complete GT4, it will not be driven on the street to avoid a wreck. So yeah. Taking this deal would have defeated my purpose and my priority, so I am going to hold out, get a bit more cash flow, and wait on a good deal for an MR2 Turbo around the Holiday season, I am certain one is bound to show up within my budget.
