I need to know if this is worth it? I would like to turbo my 5s-fe. I had the head rebuilt this past March. I am having webcams installed in about 2 weeks and all I need to do is rebuild my engine block (doesn't need it at the moment at all but I do have 184K on it and don't think it's safe to turbo). Anyway, can I just rebuild the block with stock internals and keep the webcams in with a 'low boost' set up?? I know I will need an upgraded fuel and engine management system. I just don't want to have to lose the webcams or do anything else costly unless I have to.
Turbo and mani and other various supporting mods fuel and engine man. sys open exhaust intercooler tune. Metal hg About it right? Remember, low boost set up (hoping to get about 6-8 psi). I'm thinking about the $5G mark (professional installed including parts (I have a really good hook up on parts costs). This post has been edited by 6G96GT: Nov 11, 2009 - 10:20 PM |

Im not trying to be one of those "go search" people, but have you been following the progress of the 5sfTes on this site at all?

5g should be enough, even with the stock rebuild, as long as you do it yourself. The machining of the block should be around 300-400. Do a compression test on your motor to see how healthy she is. When you had the head rebuilt, what kind of head gasket did you use? I don't understand why you would set a 5,000 limit on a 5sfte set-up with a stock internal build.
Spend the money on a 2nd gen swap, or if your lucky and can afford a 3rd gen DO IT!!!!! -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

The only reason I haven't considered a turbo swap is that I won't be able to insure my celica after the swap?? I've heard this many times. I need to keep my celica insured.
I do have very good compression (dry and wet) and I had a stock replacement hg put on. Would 6-8 pounds of boost blow that out? I think I can keep the costs down because I can get new parts very cheap for example when I bought HKS cams (264, 272) for my talon I had, the set only cost me 560 bucks new. I bought JE inverted dome top forged piston set for 569 bucks. I got a big 16g turbo for it for only 450 bucks. A friend of mine lives in texas and is a seller of these parts and gets them at a low cost and gives them to me for what he paid. It's a good deal. Well, I just don't get why you want stock pistons and rods in that thing. If you don't want to do a 3sgte swap, I say get your block and crank prepped for 3sgte rods and 87.5mm pistons. And just use the 5sfe head. Know one would be able to tell the difference. You can pick up a set of rods for what? like 40 bucks. The pistons you could probably get for a little over 500. And having your crank machined to fit the rods, you'd be golden. Thats money well spent on a solid 5sfe ready for boost. And pick up a metal head gasket too, I believe 98+.

that's good info and is right along the lines of where I want to be. Could I still use the webcams?
As far as an inter-cooler is concerned, could i use something like a stock 3sgte side mount inter cooler for boost as low as what I want? I don't need a large front mount right? |

Front mount is more efficient. 3S-GTE has a top mount, not side mount.

PLEASE, don't use a side mount in the engine bay. Now if you plan on putting it near the bumper then go for it, but the fact that you mount it there plus having to run piping there waste of money. Get an ebay front mount intercooler kit and call it a day.
As for the web cams, I believe you shouldn't have any issues. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

the TMIC on the gen 3 is water 2 air. so you have to run the pump, water lines etc.
in the end an FMIC will give u more power and future proof you incase you want more power later depending on what size you get. |

The FMIC, will NOT give you more power. Just more efficient at cooling the charged air compared to the stock top mount ATA.
Now as for A2W its a whole different ball park. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

Now as for A2W its a whole different ball park. gen3 tmic is w2a not a2a. a small FMIC will hinder your ability to produce more power as you'll be pushing air to quickly that a small system has no time to take effect on the air. for a w2a undersized tmic (like the gen3) to work as efficently as an fmic you would need to upgrade the pump and heat exchanger btw 6g, if you want to run 6-8 psi u might as well run a ct20b or ebay .57 trim. the hole setup will run u about 2500$ aroung 250whp This post has been edited by Mstoochn: Nov 13, 2009 - 5:29 PM |

I'm not talking about a 3rd gen. Who ever brought up a 3rd gen 3sgte except for you. I know what gens come with what IC.
BTW watse of money to use a ct20b with 6-8 psi. Horrible advice. Why would you buy a used turbo for $600 and run only 6-8 psi? Sh!t If I spent $600 dollars it better be damn near set at 18 psi. For 6-8 psi, a regular ct26 will do. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer

If you decide to go with a ct26, most sellers don't include the hardlines.
I have the coolant and oil hardlines. -------------------- 98 Celica gt red- totaled deer
