Can anyone tell me, is there a difference between EGR valves over the years for the 5S-FE?

I had to get a new one yesterday as mine has stopped holding vacuum. The local dealer wanted $380 + tax but 1sttoyotaparts.com had them for only $165

love those online parts places. New EGR arrived yesterday, took only 3 business days to arrive! (Probably the fastest thing I've ever had coming across the border) The culprit who was throwing codes: ![]() The replacement: ![]() Old, leaky and dirty: ![]() Shiny and new!: ![]() Cleanest thing in the engine bay: ![]() I won't say it's the best $200 spent, but it feels good to know the problem was solved for about $350 less than my mechanic wanted for the job. ![]() Now if only an EGR added HP... Oh well, lower emissions ftw! This post has been edited by Sinyk: Mar 17, 2009 - 11:58 AM -------------------- ![]() |

Aye, 1sttoyotaparts.com has long been a great source -- actually, it was recently taken over by another Washington state Toyota dealer, and one of their techs is a longtime Celicatech.com member, which is how we learned it had moved.

6 days after replacing my EGR, I get a check engine light again, same EGR insufficient flow code as before. My mechanic originally told me my egr valve wasn't holding vacuum and said it had to be replaced, so it was replaced, so what else could be the problem? The EGR modulator perhaps? I took a look at the vacuum lines and most of them seem to be in good shape and fit tight. Most of them run together under the engine to parts unknown to me (VSV? Does a 5sfe even have one?). I'm running out of culprits and I want to get this problem solved. Anyone have any ideas?

Tubing could be clogged, even if it's in good shape.

yea, it could be the tube, or VSV or modulator. i would hit a junkyard for some spare parts.

yea, it could be the tube, or VSV or modulator. i would hit a junkyard for some spare parts. I have plans to replace the modulator and the hose from the modulator to the EGR. Are you referring to the metal tube from the manifold to the egr? I have cleaned that thing many times over, but i guess replacing it couldn't hurt. Also, where is the VSV? Sadly, all I have for reference is a Haynes manual :\ I looked at the diagrams and tried to locate the VSV where they showed it to no avail. Can anyone help me find it? Picture or a really good description? -------------------- ![]() |

So the VSV is on the intake side... Hmmm.. I was looking on the exhaust side, that might be why I couldn't find it. Still, back there is not an easy place to investigate. Perhaps it would be easy to spot from under the car?
I can't seem to find a part # on 1sttoyotaparts.com for the VSV. Help? -------------------- ![]() |

That EGR stuff doesn't exist on Jap spec but what does that TVV for EVAP and Charcoal Cannister do? I think I've seen something similar to that.

Hello did you ever get this figured out? I am getting the same code for egr. Just wondering what to attack? Thanks x2, my dad's 5sfe camry is also giving the same code, would be great to know what the problem really is, instead of buying it all. ![]() -------------------- ◊◊◊ My F/S Thread! ◊◊◊

the easy fix is just to unplug the sensor, and bridge the 2 pins on the harness side of the plug.
no more code. ![]() -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

the easy fix is just to unplug the sensor, and bridge the 2 pins on the harness side of the plug. no more code. ![]() That is so cheating, but cheap! LOL. ![]() But since the car is thinking that something is wrong here, is the "thing that is wrong" hampering performance in anyway? Decrease in mpg, etc? Like on the camry, the car runs fine, no weird idle, nothing, just the annoying light that comes and goes. -------------------- ◊◊◊ My F/S Thread! ◊◊◊

X2 I am trying to get the maximum fuel mileage so if disconnecting it would lower the mileage I would not do it. However on many other cars especially old v8 muscle we disconnect the egr and don't notice anything changing however on these new computerized yotas I am not sure if it would affect mileage. Has anyone tested for this??? It would be nice to get rid of that code and not spend ridiculous amounts of money to fix it.......
Thanks |

I guess I never followed up on this post. I ended up replacing the modulator as well about 5 months ago and I have been code free since. I'm starting to suspect that the modulator was at fault all along. Oh well!
