Scraping type noise when turning Options

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is the correct place to post, but it shall do for now.

For a while now i have been hearing a Scraping type sound from where i believe, in the Front Passenger side wheel... Only when i'm turning Left.
Any type of turns as well, little vears to the left, to hard turns, so its not the Power Steering either.

Its making a "shhhch shhhch" type sound if you can try understand that haha.


Through maintenance and servicing, i've had the wheel bearing tightened, both cv boots changed, and the brake pads aren't even at half way yet.
I've taken the wheels off and thoroughly cleaned and looked for anything caught, or scraping.

The sound was there before i installed my coilovers, and before my new rims i believe.

So it's got me quite stumped.


It SOUNDS as if its coming from the front when i stick my head out, but it could be transfering from the back of the car.

So if anyone has ANY help at all, it would be great. Its not a big concerning problem, but it's bugging the hell out of me.

well from my past experience when my friend and I changed my clutch. We disconnected the left side of the control arm to the bottom half of the strut in order to take out the axle and slide the transmission out and under of the car on the left hand side. There was a loud occurring noise when we would take right (being that the gravity would being pulling towards the left side of the car) turns and it would occasionally come up again when driving in a straight line. We were so confused as to what it was that it ended up being the brake dust cover. We had bent it. You know that cover that goes behind the brake rotor and has slits in it so I guess cool air can get to it. If you don't understand what part I'm talking about I'll try and get a diagram up.

I also thought it was that. I got an air blower and blew all behind there in case anything was caught and pushed the cover back a bit incase it was rubbing. But there were no signs it was, so still stumped. I may check them out again, but they looked fine to me

How did you have the wheel bearings tightened? Sealed bearings can't be tightened or adjusted (unlike tapered assemblies on RWD cars and trucks that can be re-packed with grease and adjusted), if they have play or anything like that then they are bad and just need replaced. I'm betting that's what the problem is. If someone "tightened" it by putting more torque on the axle nut or something then all they did was cause it to wear out faster by putting more tension on it.

If a shop did it I'd be giving them an angry phone call for ripping you off on a service that's not used on these cars.

Well yeah thats what the Mechanic told me. He checked it over to try find out what it was but only came up with that. He charged me for "Tightened LHS Wheel Bearing"

Theres not much play in it though.. Roughly the same amount as the Right hand side, so shouldn't the sound be coming from there as well?

Well there shouldn't be any play at all. Sounds like your passenger's side is going out though if you have noise from the front right side when you turn left, since when you turn left all the weight is put on the right side.

If your front left has play in it though then it needs replaced too, even if it isn't making noise yet. I've seen them where they are loose but not making noise, and also seen ones that made all kinds of screeching and grumbling noise but didn't have any play at all. Wheels shouldn't have any play in them. Typically: up-and-down play is bad bearing or ball joint, side-to-side play is bad tie-rod.

Hopefully you get it figured out! Front bearings are pretty common repairs on these cars it seems.

Mods, I don't know if there is one yet but could we make a thread in the stickies about diagnosing wheel bearings and tie-rods? Seems like we've had a TON of wheel bearing threads lately and I think a thread with some good info would be very helpful.

Cheers for that info. I might go out now and pull my wheels off again and check whats going on in there, and possibly make a phone call >.< haha

Don't pull them off, just jack them up and try to wiggle the whole wheel.

Oh yeah, the wheels themselves jacked up don't have play.

Theres no sound from the RIGHT at all, and doesn't happen when i turn Right either.

Nope lol sorry that's my fault I was forgetting that passenger side in your car is the left. So left bearing making noise. Either way, there's only so many things that can make a scraping sound like that.

wheels spacing making it rub up against the inside of the wheel well?

I have the same prob. When it started to do so only a bit after this sound appeared the bearings started to squeek.
If it's not the problem I suspect maybe the cv axle?

I'll change all my 4 bearings if I can before I store it so I'll come back to you if I've done it and tell you if this was the problem.
