The other day noticed my car starting to idle to idle a little funny, sounded almost like a boxer engine at idle.
thought it may be my plugs, they were only about 6 mo old.
i was using 10w30 instead of 5w30 so thought it could be that.
So friday i Seafoamed the car, then changed the oil and the plugs
Runs great now, but the CEL came on the other day, read it as EGR code, had it deleted and it hasnt come back
but my idle is a little weird now, seems like it is idleing a little lower than normal but smoother, has a little bit of a shake too it though, thoughts anyone?

My car was idling extremely weird several months ago. Kinda like the boxer noise you're talking about. It almost even sounded like a diesel engine when it idled warm. I knew she needed a valve adjustment, but that wasn't it. That was just causing a light twittering, chirping sound. So I had a mechanic look at it, turns out that the main cam gear (since our motors aren't TRUE twin cam) had lost its pre-load and needed to be rebuilt. After that, it idled just fine.

I dunno if that's what you're experiencing, but maybe that'll give you some insight lol

ive ran 10-30w for a few years now without a problem. Oil isn't gonna cause a rough idle anyway. I would say change your wires as well. What did you plugs look like when you took them out? What is the car idling at?

I just started to run 10w30 in august, was using 5w30 before, and i went back to 5w30 the other day so it would be a little easier on the engine when it was colder out. the spark plugs were just wrecked when i took them out, they were all coated in black build up, spacing was at .20 when it should of been at .32, all gummed up etc, wires are about 6 months old along with the plugs, so im at a loss
also have a knock coming from seems like upper part of the engine when at low low rpms, about 500 to 1200, thinking it could be oil pump? help

is the noise like a clicking noise? or something else?

mine makes a bit of a ticking noise when its cold. but goes away when the engine warms up. so either its a bad valve or a lifter. and i havent changed my oil in awhile so, once i change it i might put a bit of automatic trans fluid in to see if will reduce the noise.

Yeah it'll more than likely be a valve or a lifter. My motor would make a similar noise around the same area.

Our Toyota engines make a lot of valve train noise. So id more than likely say its just that. Are you near any other celica members? If so id say go listen to their engine and see if yours is any worst, im gonna guess its not.(I say this because i was exactly like you until i heard another 7afe and realized that just what the engines sounds like)

What does your car idle at?
How many miles on the engine?

If it's a metallic sort of chirping sound, it's your valves bro.

if you had an egr code, i would check and see if the egr is slightly open. That will make the engine run lean making it run like total crap at idle, making it seem like a misfire and what not. Does the engine smooth out when your at lets say 2-3 grand just cruising along?

egr isn't a bad thing to have honestly. Its not like its opening up when your full throttle. You might be able to clean the egr out so it doesn't stick anymore.
