So I was driving and my oil light started blinking, few minutes later, I started hearing this weird grinding/knocking sound at high rpms so I slowed down to around 50
Then I put the car In nuetral and reved up, sane sound
I lost some power and the the car shut off,
I thought I ran out of gas so I filled few gallons in (I luckily stoped in front of a shell)
Started it up and hears LOUD squeaking along with the knock,

Checked my oils and i was OUT/EMPTY

So I put in 4 quarts of "golden state sae 30" (that's all they had)
Drove it to my work and now my car stopped squeaking but still hear a knock!
The oil is 'dirty but full' ....

What could it be?
No oil leaking from the bottoms, muffler is dry nothing out of the ordinary beside the knock

Keep in mind that I rebuild the engine 5000 miles ago so could it be that I messed up somewhere?
And after the rebuild, I didn't change the oil until 1300 miles like the Haynes manuel said

Happened to my last engine, you have a rod a knockin. If I part my car you can have my 5s for cheap. Been rebuilt ext for 200 bucks. Yes I have receipts.

Oh Hey I know that sound. yeah thats the sound of death. happened to my 7A, but I had oil in the car. gl man, whatever you do, it isnt going to be cheap...

We REALLY need a face palm smiley on this board.
Malhar - get in touch with Dman and see if the bottom end he has sitting in my garage is in good working order. If so Stephen and I can knock it out for you but all told your gonna end up paying $1k to fix this correctly.

well i sort of decided to just get a used engine for now, and then rebuilt this one when i get extra time and money,


so this brings me to another question:

if i get a 7afe out of a corolla, what will i have to change to get it installed on my car? and will i face a performance diff.? i was decently satisfied with how my car was running before performancewise, so will i really regret my decision of settling in for a 7afe?

OR is it just better for me to get a 5s?
and if i do get a 5s from a salvage yard, do i just need to care about the compression (i read somewhere that i just need the bottom part because i have all the electrical stuff and the head, so as long as the compression test comes out fine im good)

is that true?
