Hey guys,

Got the BGB and all the tools to do the head gasket replacement. Just wondering what you guys think the best gasket set to buy would be, or do i just need the mls head gasket? And should i go OEM or some other brand from local parts store??
Lastly, i haven't done a HG before so any tips?

Cheers,

Rece

the OEM is an MLS gasket. look at my thread in the stickys on rebuilding the 7A-FE. you didnt list what engine you have so im going to guess you have a 5S-FE. it will be a little different but since you have the BGB you should be in good shape.

First and only time i've done this was on a honda. best advice I can give you is have patience. if you even start to get frustrated take a break and come back to it later. Read the instructions for removal in your BGB over and over before you start until you feel comfortable.

Also, since you are taking off the head you may want to look into replacing other things like your timing belt/water pump. You may also want to look into getting a gasket set rather than just the gasket for the head. Assuming you will be taking the head to a machine shop?

Sorry forgot to mention it is a 5sfe.
Yes i am planning to get the head resurfaced and the valve seals done as well.
The timing belt and water pump was done 20k km ago so should be in good shape but while im there ill have a look at it.
The few sets ive found from the local parts dealer do not include head bolts. Is it a good idea to get new ones?

I did this job last year, not to bad. I used new head bolts but found an inexpensive reman. head. Job went ok now runs like a top but now I have oil leaks in oil pump. one thing or another.

if you are going that far, i suggest pulling the engine out and doing a full overhaul. Toyota has both a full engine gasket kit and a Head up gasket kit. the Head up has all the gaskets from the headgasket up.
