I've been wondering about this thing that is behind my back view mirror. I've seen it on another local Celica too.
Has a spring mechanism and some wires running into it.    |

Does it have any wires going into it from under the roof lining?
Yes is the answer... I just re-read your original post  do you have any additional switches in the cabin at you are yet to identify?
