I think I'll have something nerdly neat on the Celica for the engineers to discuss. An alternator decoupling pulley...

laugh.gif Srsly you work for an alternator manufacturer? I've been working on figuring out if this would even fit the Celica for like....3 years off and on. Checking shaft dimensions, pulley applications, etc when I thought about it and wasn't already busy. Wasn't until I got a RockAuto closeout email that listed this Litens OAD rebranded as Dayco that said it would fit the Celica GT (because it fits later 1ZZ's) that I figured it would fit the GTS as well because Denso *probably* used the same alternator shaft because why wouldn't they? Good news is that I think they do because it's mounted. Now, I didn't have a way to hold the alternator shaft during assembly so here's to hoping that my 1300lb impact was able to smack on enough torque before the alternator rotating assembly spun (and the blue loctite) will be enough to hold it in place.

The OAD interested me because roughly 8-10lbs of mass at 3x crank speed is a lot of stored energy to slow down from 8,000 RPM to 5,000 RPM when shifting. It's a lot for the belt to absorb, it's a lot for the tensioner to absorb. And there must be some benefit to these devices for efficiency because it seems like every new car has one, maybe I'll pickup up a MPG, maybe it'll be able to shift a little faster, maybe my expensive belt tensioner will last longer, maybe I just wasted $40 and it'll do nothing. I'll find out later today probably.

Hey, I like obscure niche crap and experimenting. I'm the guy who put plastic covers on the door check joints because it looks nicer, the door checks that you never see and will never notice have covers on them. Niche ****. Someone has to be the eccentric weirdo...

Oad's are usually installed when there is an issue of throwing belts or 'chirps' upon engine shutdown. Can be a problem on diesels with larger alts. The cause is exactly what you described, lots of rotating inertia. They arent popular with car oems because of cost. However what is becoming common is damper pulleys, which fix issues with violent tensioner movements and belt flutter on the slack side

*fights urge to spew random pulley facts. Will save for meet lol

Haha we can derail this thread like a thrown belt.

It's a Litens model resold by Dayco, Litens applications for their OAD include a bunch of cars, I see the one way pulleys on many cars but I've never tested to see which are just one way and which have the spring to dampen as well. This one def has a spring to dampen in it. I dunno, waste of $40 maybe lol that's like what, one tank of 93? Pfft whatever.

It is,but there's buttons for fun. Makes it like a slow manual kind of, but not really. You're welcome to take it for a spin and peg it off the fuel cut a deal times.
