hey guys. well, i been saving up lots of money and i wanna start navigating at some simple bolt ons and stuff for my celica, but i had some questions before i start buying stuff.

whats the difference between a muffler and an exhaust?

whats the difference between a catback exhaust and just an exhaust??

also, which one of the three above do people put on their cars to make it roarr?

and finally, whats the diff between a short ram intake and a cold air intake? also are there different kinds of intakes i havent mentioned? which is the best?

thanks for helping me out guys, thanks!

the muffler is part of the exhaust system... it does what it is called.. muffles or quiets down the noise of the exhaust gasses making their way out of your engine "even though it can amplify the noise as well"

catback is short for catalytic converter back so the exhaust piping from the cat back would be replaced

some people just change out their muffler for a folger's can style and get the rice factor(just a whole lotta loud noise) they are looking for.. usually at a muffler/exhaust shop the guys selling the stuff will be pretty honest about what kind of system would be most helpful to your situation

if you are'nt sure of something try using the search feature and you can avoid some of the scrutiny that noobs normally get smile.gif

for the short ram this is from the info articles on the home page http://6gc.net/index.php?action=information&itu=11

do a search on cold air intake and you would get click me

so changing your cat back doesnt make it sound any different, but changing the exhaust does?

no. the exhaust is the whole system, look at the pic. changing the muffler changes the sound. cat has nothing to do with sound. the cat is just for emmissions purpouses.

the catback is the exhaust piping from the catalytic converter shown above all the way to the muffler at the end they are all part of your exhaust system

the catyltic converter does make a difference in noise because it is a restriction on your exhaust system however removing it is illegal for emission purposes in CA the muffler makes a difference as well as the size of the piping

No its not illegal but removing your cat is(you wouldn't pass an emission test)

when you get a new catback exhaust system done at a shop they generally replace all the piping from the cat...back

so im guessing getting a whole new cat back is alot more performance gaining then changing a muffler right? and its also a whole lot more expensive

yep, but you get the most power gains out of a full cat-back system. just replacing the muffler gives you only sound

So..... "catback" means "including the cat, and back", or "excluding the cat, and back"?

^^ you are correct, sir

your best bet is to go with a cat-back system for performance, and throw a decent high-flow catalytic converter on there too, as long as you can get one that meets the cali emissions requirements

ok so this

http://www.6gc.net/index.php?action=parts&itu=1

its called a cat back so i understand its more then just a muffler. and it shows more then just a muffler in the pics.

but something like this

http://www.6gc.net/index.php?action=parts&itu=335

its titled as an exhaust system. and the picture only shows the muffler.
