Hi guys, my dad says that since I plan on putting so much into my celi, (interior and exterior red glow, seats reupohlstered in red/black leather, reverse glow gausges, etc...just bragging biggrin.gif ...) that I should get a fuel cut-off switch hidden in the car to turn off when I leave so the car only has enough fuel to get a few blocks if stolen unless the switch is turned back on. (It closes the fuel line from the tank and leaves the engine with only what it already has) I was just curious as to any methods you guys think would work. I told him the security system I'm leaning toward has starter kill. What is starter kill and is it effective? My dad says that a fuel cut-off is the best bet and I just want to know more about it and how much it would cost and just some general info. Also I would just appreciate any ideas that anyone might have (bucket of water hanging over driver door, giant rolling boulder, boxing glove on a spring, ejector seat, etc.) lol but I seriosly do need ideas. Help me out!!!

P.S.- Sorry for this LONG ASS post!

they dont need to start your car to steal anything..

Ive read somewhere about a safety system that engages your brakes when you hit something.. with that no one can move you car at all

I forgot to mention that the car would be parked in a University parking lot so, while it may still be easy to steal, it might be impractical to gut the car with the night watch on patrol...

id say wire up a switch to your fuel injection fuse in your engine bay, with that fuse disconnected your car will turn over but not start.

as far as protecting your insides, tinted windows and an alarm are about all you can do.

That fuel injection fuse sounds like a good idea. BTW, I've been meaning to ask about our car's specs. Fuel injection was one of my questions. Does anybody know how to wire that? Or does anyone have any other ideas that may be better or easier or just different. Not to put down your idea, but its always best to get as many as possible...

i've heard of the fuel pump cut switch before. i had thought it was more of an electrical cut-off switch, than something mechanical that closes the fuel line.

i was also under the impression that the amount of gas stored in the engine wasn't enough to get the car anywhere.

i'm not a mechanic though, anyone with more knowledge want to educate me on these points?

its good to tell people the security in your cars. makes it easier for them to nick if they know roughly where you live!

You could put a switch in the positive wire to your fuel pump. Or you could put a mechanical tap in your fuel line. Both would be similar result but the switch would be easier to hide.

Shaved handles means taking out the keyhole and handles and welding a plate in its place, then the door would be popped open with a solenoid wired from your alarm spare.

Whoa....great thread, I think I need to put a post-it somewhere to remember to come back here. Theft is a HUGE problem where I live, and if they caan't steal the car, they do their best to break into it and take everything out...and my university has the WORST security ever (I've had speakers stolen from my last car).

All my friends want to know why I don't have my amps and 12's in yet...and I tell them...I NEED to get the alarms sytem working before I do ANYTHING....lol

....supposedly the one that's in has that starter kill you were talking about...because the guy who sold it to me said to be careful about playing with the fritsy alarm because if it's set the car will not start, period...

I say you smear flesh-eating bacteria under your door handles and just always make sure to wear gloves biggrin.gif

simplest way to protect your car is to sell it, then you wont have to worry about it getting stolen.

Instead of wiring up a switch or something, just pull the injector fuses or the PCM fuse or the like. They can find a switch, but I doubt thieves carry extra fuses around much less would think to look there as the problem.

My dads making my bros car theft proof since it was already stolen but he wont even tell me what hes doing to it :-(

Ive never thought about really worrying about security on my celica. I used to leave my laptop and purse in it every night.

I dont think alarms really do that much good. When im at the mall and I hear one going off I just assume its going off because of an exhaust or something (usually cuz of me) so I dont think anyone pays attention to them. I would go for something like you were talking about a starter kill or something.

^^^i agree^^^ or pop out one of the engine harness...

from what i've been told the starter kill does work and stop the starter from turning over but if you have a manual they can push start or pop the clutch and get it going...correct me if i'm wrong...that's only if there's more then one person..

even with a slim jim you cant open my door, with lexan windows there would be no way in, only option would be to get a tow truck and drag it away wile the alarm screems. down side to lexan windows is in a crash if you car catches fire and your passed out, firefighters cant get it to help or get you out.

as far as theft proof, there is no such thing, there is always a way to take it, just gata do the best you can like a 2 way pager alarm, always snap locking your steering wheel so it takes the key to turn it, and keep all windows rolled up tight.

I have a two way pager alarm sistem, and I'm gonna install my rims this weekend so I gotta protect them too, for that I bought 5 set of 4 lock nuts, all 5 sets have diferents keys so I think I'll be installing one of each on every single wheel.
I know is gonna be a pain to change a tire but if it's hard for me I think it's gonna be a little harder for a thief to get all 4 wheels out of my car.

there's this device for storing cars, its basically a knob that replaces your pos. bat. terminal connector...they work remarkably well for cheap. i can't remember what in the deuce its called, but if you're interested, i'll look at the one on my buddies dads camaro.

the best i've seen are quick-release steering wheel hubs. nobody, no matter how good they are, can drive a car without a steering wheel!

some alarms have sensors in them that will set off the alarm if it goes out of level, i.e. someone tries to tow it away...which is pretty much a done deal anyway.

or just sit in it holding a loaded shotgun biggrin.gif

paint it bright fuscia w smiley faces everywhere and make it so if the car is running the only thing that plays through the speakers is Culure Club's Karma Chameleon at an extremely load setting and there is no way to turn it off without entering a password into the keypad connected to your stereo

or

the quick release hub and a starter disabling alarm w/ the siren mounted in the car

^ in the car not under the hood!! like hide that thing so they cant disconnect it. and park it in water so they cant get it out, or take the wheels with ya so they cant drive it away, or take the motor or just take a few fuses when ya leave, or leave it at home in the garage. also with that paint and music its only gana get it vandalized very badly

or just accept that fact that crap happens and you can only be so prepared, also make sure it well insured.

Well I installed a 1959 Bus horn in my car using a tractor relay and and inline fuse, so now my horn is a BAMF and any person breaking in would get quite an ear full.... just a thought since I know my previous horns were kinda pansie-ish... laugh.gif

I would think that the blinking red light from a stock alarm is enough to deter most thiefs. they want an easy target.

also, you can't start the car while that alarm is going off... trust me... I once was getting off work around 11 pm, I go out to my car to find that the battery on the remote is dead... so I can't disable the alarm, so I open the door with the key... there goes the alarm, but it won't let me start the car no matter what.

then if you're gonna get a cd deck, make sure it has a removable faceplate, then you can just take that with you.

better to park next to something that is going to be alot easier to steal, most theives (other than being complete w**kers that need to die a slow painful death!!) are opportunists, if theres a celica with alarm and steering wheel locks sitting next to a banged out civic with no alarm, no wheel lock and doors unlocked then they would most likely go for the latter, less hassle means quicker getaway.

Certain ones would just nick a car just to drive to where they want to be then dump it. Nick another for the return journey thats all.

tint your windows 5% and put the front shades up. have 2 sirens, one inside the car in back of the steering wheel and another one (with a battery backup) under the hood.

My alarm is a POS. I have armed it, and then rocked the car back and forth. Nothing, but when a truck goes by, sure enough, like clockwork, that alarm goes off. Quite annoying. If I were going to steal a car, I would trip the alarm 4 or 5 times before, so that the owner would get tired of resetting it and leave it off. Score.

My friend has this thing on his SER that is a plug sort of thing that is under his seat. When he gets out he unplugs it, which I guess cuts all starting power. He has to put the "key" back in and lock it before the car will start up again.

you may be laughing. but it's true. absolute worst place to ever park your car is a grocery store parking lot. and I work at a grocery store so my car is parked there about 32 hours a week. never park next to: buicks, SUV's of ANY kind!, old beaten down sedans (80's camrys, accords, etc.) trust me, I can tell you from the numerous door dings on my car. best place to park, is next to a curb, as close to the curb as you can get.

no joke but that actually worked for me this week. someone tried to steal my car but realized they couldnt,(steering wheel was locked) so they tried to steal my subs but they were too big to fit through the back seats. The lever to pop the trunk is broken so they tried messing with the key hole. Didnt happen. IF YOU HAVE A SYSTEM IN YOUR TRUNK, GET RID OF THE TRUNK LEVER, IT MAKES THEM NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO STEAL!

Edit:this might only work for coupes i think

Just dont forget to remove when you get ready to leave. a theif isnt gonna pay any attention to that. buying new tires is better than buying a new car and finding yours burned down in a feild somewhere stripped completely of anything of any value. (i have a friend that had that happen too) also, i removed the trunk switch in my cab so that you have to have the keys to get into the trunk.

oh my god...all though i was joking about the whole tack thing...i just realized...that might actually work...lol

no joke but that actually worked for me this week. someone tried to steal my car but realized they couldnt,(steering wheel was locked) so they tried to steal my subs but they were too big to fit through the back seats. The lever to pop the trunk is broken so they tried messing with the key hole. Didnt happen. IF YOU HAVE A SYSTEM IN YOUR TRUNK, GET RID OF THE TRUNK LEVER, IT MAKES THEM NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO STEAL!

Edit:this might only work for coupes i think

and almost impossible to get into your trunk

You guys do know that the key on the hatch can be turned to the left (other way than to unlock it) then removed. Then your inside trunk lever doesn't work.

I suppose thieves would still steal it. Anyways, simple ways to protect it are like this:

Get an alarm system with ignition and fuel pump cut, that way you're protected two ways. Get a 2-way if you want to know when it goes off.

Get a gadget that has a key (mentioned on first? page) that must be in to start the car. Often they have a random pattern of 30 pins or so that's almost impossible to insert.

Tinting windows and concealing stereo equpiment are good things. Shaved handles and lexan windows are nice but rather expensive, I think.

my 2 cents.

Hi folks, I live in the south east UK, where I am there are loads of 'chavs' that hang about in gangs. Although my GT is on the driveway, along side my (Civic and Almera), those as.h*ls just wont leave my Celi alone. I haven't got a garage, so it is exposed for all to see. One day they even wrote some wierd code on the condensation - you reckon its signlanguage to target the car?

I recently got this steering wheel lock http://www.argos.co.uk/wcsstore/argos/imag...65UC226504X.jpg so that:
1. it will slow down the thief
2. acts as a visual deterrant
3. it's in the way of the head unit (yes they even steal the unit without the facia control nowadays!!)
4. If they did manage to rip out the front console to get at the head unit, the large lock device gets in the way
5. the lock is so large it rests on the horn, and is easily activated

What I don't understand is why they want to break into the car (they tried screwdrivers by the door edge next to the door glass - they broke part of the plastic edging ( mad.gif GRRR!). I already have an alarm / imobiliser installed - do they really think they can drive it away - or hope to find some goodies in the glove - box - no way!

Any other ideas for deterants welcome.

Oh yeah, how is it best to secure a subwoofer in the boot? Chain and bolts?

use pin torx for everything or one-way screws, and secure it all to the car with large bolts and washers. use pin torx to put the subs in the box and bolt the box to the car.

i just got an alarm and the only expenisve thing in my car is my deck but it dosnt mater because even if they see it and take it, it has a security system on it and it wont be useable unless you insert the key CD in it (which i made myself so theres only one smile.gif ) and then its tracked by GPS anyways.

i heard of this alarm system that shoots fire from under the car. it give a warning its like, "step away from the car blah blah blah" then it has a count down. and at the end it shoots flames from all aroud your car. but to bad it never went into production. they tested it and the dummies they used melted. so it never got approved.

forgot where i heard that though

Sure it's nice to fantasize about putting a flamethrower under the car or a rotwieler in the back seat or shocking the f-er when her touches the car. btw the typical thief is a destructive person so they will more than likely bust your car up if they do get hurt by it.

Car security 101

Think like a thief, what would you absoultely hate when you're stealing a car?

--> Attention to yourself <--

Thiefs don't want to be seen doing what they are doing. The key to deter the most persistant theif is just that

Install some LOUD sirens (notice plural) outside. High pitch siren and low pitch siren, air raid sirens do wonders also. Hide the sirens in unreachable areas (ie behind the front turn signals), black loom all wires and route them with stock wires and out of reach from the open hood (ie inside the fender).

Install lights, lots of them, even if they are just for your alarm. Strobes, neons, blinking lights, flashers for your headlights/tails/fog/etc.. the more the better.

Install piezo pain generators inside the car so if they do get in, their ears will bleed to the sound of those piezos.

make sure your car is well equiped with a well installed high quality 2-way paging system with:
-shock sensor, tilt sensor, proximity sensor. Tune them very well so you get few false alarms.
-Starter kill (those also work on fuel pump and EFI circuits btw).
-Backup battery for the whole system (also relocating the battery to the trunk and read below)
-Electric trunk poper that only works with ignition on or remote (removing the lever)

that there is more than enough to choo away the most daring theif and make almost any attempt a failure.

what if they do take it away, cause it's still possible, unlikely but possible

install a GPS tracking device and call the police to track it down as soon as its noticed that it's been stolen.

Those are REALISTIC ways to deter thiefs without too much compremise to the normal opperation of the car.

If anyone needs help with wiring a "special" feature, PM me and I will help you out
