How serious is it when you have a bad clutch throw out bearing?

Really? I did a google, and from what I could find. People seem to be able to drive they're car fine. They just complain about the noise. The only thing I couldn't find was how serious the problem is.

edit: better explaination. bear with my lack of the correct terminology
its just a metal ring that attaches to the fork and moves up and down the shaft in the transmission to push in that disc with the springs and push out the pressure plate to disengage the clutch. in other words (you probably didn't need that whole explaination) the middle is what usually gets worn out so if its just worn or not lubed well anymore it'll still do its job, probably just make a little noise. if its broken (although I'm not sure what you were doing that it would be that bad) you might have a problem. you can still drive the car fine, just replace it next time you replace the clutch. it's not expensive, but it's not serious enough to justify taking the whole transmission off just to replace that one thing ![]() This post has been edited by hurley97: Oct 12, 2006 - 4:10 PM -------------------- |

If its stuck or if you drive with the bearings broken it will rattle like a can and could possibly damage the clutch. When you engage the clutch it stops the tranny from spinning and in turn this thing does the spinning in place of the tranny. SO if it was worn you could see lots of smoke coming from the tranny now and then.

thats what im experiencing right now. Iono what i did wrong when i install my throw out bearing, but it rattle like a can when i put everything back together. It quiets down only when i engage the clutch or driving it. Ive been driving it for about 6mths and my motor and tranny only has 58k on it and now my 5th gear doesnt go in and it grind on 3rd. Someone told me that throw bearing if you hear it like a can, you didn't install it right and it will ef up your tranny and i believe it. O and u know what i cant wait to open that sucker up and beat the **** out of it. Its annoying to hear it and embarrassing! I can tell when im at a stop light ppl are looking around to see where the hell thats coming from. I just look straight and pretend its not me or i have to hold down the clutch. I just bought another tranny im just waiting for my clutch kit to come.
