Okay, a little diversion...

Someone posted a thread on another Celica forum and I thought I would do the same here. If you were lead designer for the Celica department at Toyota, how would you style the 8th Gen celica?

The rules:
* You may only post in this thread if you include an illustration in your post. Even if you are only replying to someone else.
* No duplicate images. You may modify someone elses image to illustrate your point.
* No bending of the rules (that includes trivial changes to an image just so you can post a reply)
* Anything goes (No judgements on quality of ideas or quality of draftsman skills, please)
* Its just for fun wink.gif

Okay, to get the ball rolling... I dunno where this came from or even if it is Toyota (probably not). Google found it.

IPB Image

* Mercedes Benz CLK syle headlights for a modern take on the Gen6 look
* Quad Ferrari-shaped afterburner taillights
* Vanquish style rear end, hatch, rear quarters
* Supra style rear vents/scoops
* 6th gen GT4 style mid air intake
* all-wheel drive

well, i was working on a 3d model of a 6gc. and a day before this thread got started i was thinking about what i'd do for an 8gc.

my 6g is rough, but has a slight interior, which i had to gut to make this. which is still pretty rough, but i need to get back to my life right now. so this is "her good side", her butt is ugly at the moment.
IPB Image
basically a 6gen body, wider rear wheel wells, and bigger rear wheels to accentuate the 6g's hips more. slightly longer engine bay. slightly sportier rear-quarter window. i didn't have time to get the lights together right (i'd have them look more like a 6g and less like a old porsche). and i was trying for the nostrils of the ferrari 360.

spec wise i was thinking it'd be cool to re-merge the celica and supra line. have the durable 3.0 longitudinally mounted straight 6 of the supra (available in na or tubro) with options for rwd or awd. the only problem is that toyota would sell so many that the car wouldn't be rare anymore.

A 2 door for sure, similar to an '06 civic body with the 6th gen wide rear end look to it. The front end would be a new style of the 6th gen gt4. Sorta like the 06 camry.

Based on the Echo/Vitz/Yaris.
FWD
Possible lower roof line if affordable
It comes with a new designed 1.6lt turbo ~180hp ~155lb-ft (similar to 4age, but new and redesigned) (maybe vvti)
Sports suspension developed with TRD.
optional 8 speaker sound system with cd player.
Wing/sideskirts/front lip optional.
5 speed manual only
Base model has 1.8 echo motor (7afe, or similar) with vvti
All wheel disk brakes on turbo model and optional on Base
~$18,000 for Turbo
~$15,000 for Base

I think that would be a pretty marketable car. I would buy one in a heart beat. Gives a good option to the SRT-4, but Toyota. As long as they don't build it like a tin can, it should sell well. Even if they built it cheap, it would still sell. The lower roof would help performance, but if it costs more to do I don't think it would be a good idea. If they just offer a sportier Yaris, I'll buy that. No 4 door option of course. That just ruins the models look.

imo if toyota does re-introduce a celica, it will have a strong resembalance to the first gen cars- so i'd guess a sporty 1.6 L 1-4 coupe (aka no hatch), just for the fact that the celica has a strong legacy in japan, and when they phased it out there, they said the nameplae reflected the past...

Toyota just doesn't have a market for the cars anymore.

If you want a performance car and still keep it in the family, take a look at Lexus. Otherwise, you probably won't see another performing Toy for years.

I'd get an IS300 if I wanted to stick with Toyota, either that or try to rebuild or swap a N/A MKIV Supra, or even a 91-93 MR-2.

Ok first of all, the tC is NOT an 8th Gen Celica.

The engine, suspension and drive-train are what one could expect in a Celica, but the look is way too boring. The Celica has always looked different from the other Toyota models in any given generation. It has always looked sportier, and has had something unique in its appearance that couldn't be found in the Corolla or Camry.

If I may compare Toyota with Honda for a moment, the Celica should be likened to the Prelude or the Integra, not the Civic or the Accord. See where the styling has gone with those for an idea of what would be to come.

Regardless, some things should be consistent: Always 2 door, the option of hatchback vs. notchback, agressive body styling, while retaining some semblance of, for lack of a better phrase, "cuteness". 'Cause let's face it. Guys dig Celicas for their performance and tweakability, and girls (most of them) dig Celicas because "they're cute". Now whether it has two or four headlights, whether they pop up, whether it has folding or stationary mirrors, hoodscoop or no, AWD, etc, those are the details.

In my personal opinion, the Celica should not look like a cross between the 7th and 6th generations. Styles make circles, not parabolas. In other words, they go back to the beginning, but they don't go backwards. If the style is going to regress, it's probably going to look like a cross between the 7th generation and the 1st generation, like Ford did with the Mustang: some sort of more angular, modern version of the 1st generation. I'll brainstorm when work's not busy and see if I can't come up with some idea for the shape of it.

But it's NOT the tC.

Sorry - afraid I have to agree with Wannabegt4. Not literally - I mean we all know the tC is not a Celica but it's likely to be the closest thing we will see to an 8th Gen for a while. Also quite a few non Celica/tC drivers I know say it looks like a combination of the 7th and 6th gen Celicas. It's all a matter of opinion but owning both I say the tC feels very Celica-ish.

I would equate the tc to an 8th gen. I know it's different than what YOU would consider a celica to be, but lets face it, the 7th gen celica was different than what you would consider a celica to be. Looking at the history of redesigned celicas, you can tell how each celica retained styling cues or engineering from the previous version.

For example, from the 5th gen to the 6th.

-Uses same basic engines
-uses similar colors(toyota red)
-the doors are the same
-taillight configuration is similar

4th gen to 5th

-use pop up headlights with turnsignal separate on the side
-similar engine components
-similar taillight configuration
-overall similar shape

whereas the 7th gen retains virtually nothing from any of it's predecessors, if the tc isn't an 8th gen celica, the 7th gen celica shouldn't be a celica. the only thing that makes the 7th gen a celica is the fact that they continued the nameplate.

i think it looks pretty good thumbsup.gif to my eyes it looks like a blend of the 6th gen and 7th gen. Look at the rear fender, its looks reall close to the 6th gen, as well as the roundness of the front bumper in between the headlights. Wishful thinking but i wish toyota would bring it back, maybe with a 3sgte??..... one day

take the supposed "8th gen desing" ^ add some wider fenders in the rear, like alot wider, and make the front a lil more bubbly and slant the front down.

The new Yaris is to come out in Febuary with the 1.8 130hp motor. That is the new Celica. Toyota is attempting to bring back a little sport with it's TS badges. No more TRD though.

What do you mean no more TRD? Now that Toyota bought TRD and it's not a seperate entity I heard they were actually going to be doing more TRD vehicles. My friend just bought the new TRD Tacoma and his brother is on the waiting list for the new TRD Tundra when it comes out in Jan/Feb.

the only statements i disagree with are those that say 'tC' stands for 'toyota celica'. i think that's coincedence. it was supposed to be the xC but volvo happened to have that. when i bought my tC, i did find the entire car to be just like my 6th gen with more modern styling inside and out and upgraded motor... and that new car smell. esentially, a fully loaded 6th gen celi gt wouldve felt like an almost direct upgrade. i had a base st with the only options being power windows and locks, so i was 'wowed' by the sunroof, audio system, 4 wheel disc brakes, abs, and the other extras that came in the release series i bought. i must agree the tC is the 8th gen and one of the things that stopped them from giving it the celica nameplate is that it wouldve affected their marketing srategy for the scion brand and their target audience. scion for life! biggrin.gif

EDIT: Punch, I just noticed Jamasco in the background. is that jason's tC?

tC has absolutely nothing to do with the celica, at all. it has an unimpressive motor, and doesn't have an aggressive look like the 5th-7th gens have had.

if anything, it's a sporty camry. in fact, the same motor is found in the camrys & solaras.

eh...this is giving me a headache...no offense to anyone and to their opinions...but i don't see where this is really going because no celica or supra for all that matters is really coming back, until we see it come back...but i do hope (*key word: HOPE) they bring back the supra and the celica; making it a collectors edition car, one of a kind....and making it look meaner without that body style like the infiniti G and the Nissan 300z and other cars that has that same style...just make it looks represent the true TRD RACING SPORTLINE cars...that's all smile.gif, if they do bring it back...don't go back to its past like the Ford mustangs....move forward with new designs that DIFFERS and SPEAKS for itself, not backwards....lol

unimpressive motor? no offense but what would you call yours? i have an auto st too and the tC's motor is pretty sweet. i mean, compared to a supra, it's unimpressive. but then again, so is a supra compared to a mclaren.

Jason you are out of class. You can't compare a low class car to a mid class car. That's like saying I have a pencil too and a pen is pretty sweet. compared to a sharpee its unimpressive. but then again, so is a sharpee compared to a marker.

Oh yeah, and the TC has nothing to do with the Celica. The whole TC replacing the Celica scene was just a minor misthought from enthusiasts. It was more of a, "What? No more Celicas? Oh, the TC just came out so I guess they are replacing them or they are the new Celicas."

As much as I like the tC's, they can never replace the Celicas. People need to stop trying. Cuz if it was indeed a Celica, it would be called a Celica. Not even in Japan they call it a Celica.

I'd call mine an unimpressive motor in a car that cost me twice as less, and looks twice as better than a tC does.

feel free to refute any of the comments i've made instead of typing LOL 8 times. so far, i've seen nothing impressive come out of the tC. i fail to see how it's a better "starting base" than a 6th or a 7th gen, since a 3s swap in a GT isn't as difficult or as pricey as trying to get any kind of performance out of a tC.

sporty camry? then that would make your car a sporty corolla since the 7afe was on there... im with mac, i love my st too... almost sounds like ure saying what you hear because a 5spd tc is actually faster than a manual gts. those cars have no torque compared to the tc and off the line, every race ive witnessed, the gts gets spanked. i hate to rank on any gen celica, but ure just hating on a car youve probably never driven or been in.

i didn't buy my car to win races, i bought it because it looked nice, was cheap, and i knew it would be reliable.

and exactly how is a 5 speed tC faster than a 7th gen GT-S? i've been in both, driven both, and i can honestly say that the 7th gen packs more punch than the tC does. the tC feels like i'm lugging around and it has no life, the 7th gen at least revs nice & goes like a raped ape if you keep it in lift between shifts.

Ok first thing i'm comparing an ST-GT 6th gen/s .. this is how the tc is a better starting base.

tc
HP 160 TQ 162

gt
HP 130 TQ 135

st
HP110 TQ 115

As for pricey trying to get any kind of performance out of a tc.. LOL sorry had to light..
2400K for a Bolt on Turbo pushing the WHP to 260... now show me anyone that has done a 3s swap under 3k? I could post a ship load of performance parts for the tc..but. let me not finish that statement ..

well, if you consider this :

2400-2800 for a turbo kit

16,000 base price
tuning
new clutch
exhaust

you're probably looking at a lot more than 20,000 for a 250-260hp tC. to me, 20,000+ for a turbo'd scion just isn't worth it, but to each their own.

you realize that "tC" stands for "third car" right?
thats what the scion dealer told me
and i doubt they bring back the celica,
i kinda like that
cause now everytime i go to the toyota dealer, i get complements on how much they like my celica and how they messed it up when the 7th gen came out
but ya

I am so glad you cant buy that thing yous call a tC here.
as for talking about it ???
i can ramble on about falcons, Commodore and the fastest little car i have ever ownd a TX5 for ages but it dosent meen much out of Australia.
In a 8th gen celica I would want a little over 200HP (celicas arent the fastest)
a longer car than the 7th gen (I dont like the short rear end)
but thats my 0.016 cents ($0.02 AUD)

You stand so firm by that claim because you heard it from a guy who works at a Scion dealer? That's alot of confidence in someone whos credentials from Toyota equate to:

"You like the way it drives?"

"Yeah, here's the cd player under this little plastic door."

"Well, it's only priced over the MSRP because so many places don't have the TC, you'd have to be on a waiting list anywhere else... so you should go ahead and buy it here."

That guy would do anything to have a conversation with you and that includes making **** up, so don't lay you're supposed facts on top of his pile of lies.

"Third car?" Seems a little generic, how about...

"Top car"

"Tasty coupe"

"Terrific car"

"Tremendous coupe"

???

-Yes, I am a crazy, it's finals week.

The 7th Gen GTS owns the tC especially the 6 speed. Been proven in our club since the 7th Gen guys got p-envy because they were not the newest Toyota car out. They felt they had to prove they were faster than the tC and they were right. I have witnessed many 7th Gen vs. tC races and the tC never came out on top. Never. Even a nicely modded GT can beat an equivalently modded tC. And my 6th Gen GT is waaaaay faster than my tC. Not opinions - fact supported by many friends who actually own/race the cars including a release series which is very sweet BTW.
BTW - I like my tC alot but it's not as quick [due to the weight I think] as the older gen Celica's. <= that's right I said it.

I second this. This is INDEED fact! Jason you just got lucky that one time. I told you and you know it. >:P laugh.gif

BUT STILL GUYS! TC = NOT 8th GEN. Sorry, stop trying to replace the Celicas with the TCs. Just not gonna work. I don't care what you believe in, if the maker says its not, its not.

its marketing exsane, you dont wanna continue to release the same old "celica" that mom and dad drove, release a sporty looking car with TONS of options (another current fad, like your drift desire). In essnece of the newer celicas, the tc is a nice 8th gen (not origional im sorry) but hey its still a toyota.

id love to see a v6 awd concept
would be siiiickky. biggrin.gif

ok... im going to say 2 things here:

the scion tc and celica gt-s are too similar. yes... stock manual vs. stock manual, the gt-s, by the "official" numbers, should win. i forget i live near a city called hialeah where 99% of drivers dont know how to drive. the races ive seen between the two, the tc comes out on top. the car's 1/4 mile times are very close, i believe less than half a second apart... id rather not argue back and forth about a race that really depends on the driver. even the same racers going back and forth will probably have a different winner for each race because the cars are very close. the celica gts vs tc is a driver's race.

the scion tc is the 8th gen. the celica will not come back and if it does, it wont be for a very long time. money drives these companies... toyota doesnt think, 'hey, lets tailor to these celica enthusiasts on 6gc and work on a celica to make them happy'. enthusiasts arent the only people that buy cars - the whole world does. i dont know how else to explain that, but if u understand business, you understand why toyota does what they do. a lot of people here take their decisions so personal. lol. u cant wear ur emotions on ur sleeve regarding the celica... its just a car. let me put it this way - the name is what it is, a name. if toyota decided to call the tc a celica, what difference would that make? we wouldnt be having this conversation. we'd be having one about how the 8th gen sucks balls or how ugly it is, the same way we do about the 7th gen.

in terms of what resembles the essence of what the Celica has always been, the tC most closely resembles that formula, but even toyota themselves stated that the reason why they stoped Celica sales in North America is because they needed a new direction that followed current trends in car sales, and thus the tC was introduced... How that equates into the 8th gen celica, I don't see it... It's like saying that the 2000GT was the first gen Supra...

Car #3: 98 Accord LX- purchased 5/06, totaled 8/06
Car #2: 95 Celica GT- purchased 8/03, current daily driver
Car #1: 01 Focus ZX3- purchased 5/01, sold 8/03

LoL. You guys are saying the same old thing over again. The Scion TC REPLACED, I repeat, REPLACED the Celica. That doesn't mean !IT IS! THE 8th GEN Celica. Get your facts straight guys. LoL! The topic is on if there was a new Toyota car that ACTUALLY IS NAMED Toyota Celica that is coming out, what would it be like. The Scion TC is not badged with Toyota Celica, thus followed up what was just said on before me. Toyota stopped the production for the Celica. So that means, the TC is NOT a freakin Celica. It may resemble and replaced the Celica, but still not a Celica! Thus making it NOT the 8th Gen Celica.

Makes you stop and think doesn't it? LoL.

Few reasons why I believe the tC isn't the 8th gen :

1) There are no alternative models for the tC. There isn't a tC ST, or a tC GT. Almost every single Celica that was ever produced came in different makes, or a convertible.

2) Toyota officially dropped out of sports car production because they said there just wasn't enough demand in the market. If the tC is the 8th gen, and the celica is considered a sports car, why are they even bothering to produce it?

3) The tC isn't sold in Japan. Every single Celica that was ever produced, to my knowledge, was available in Japan. It is strictly a US model.

It's a decent car, but a Celica it doth not make.

In terms of how fast it is, well, I'd say it probably would give you a better bang for the buck in terms of performance if you were to boost it, but it still doesn't have the aggressive styling that the majority of the Celicas have had over the years. I'm sure you could change that with body kits, different stuff, etc.. But stock, it reminds me of a Civic Si or something similar.

tC don't equal toyotaCelica.

tC equal toyotaCamry.

It has a Camry engine to further prove my point.

Wow that makes perfect sense, oh wait. 5sfe is in the celica ya? but...also in the 3rd and 4th gen camry...and 1st gen camry solara. So that makes celicas, camrys? Toyotas share histroy, dont get caught up in the shiney chrome badge. Its not the end all do all.

So if celicas have camry motors, would makesense to see the new celica as a camry. your facts back up a side but not the side you wanted it to.

wtf? This is so moot. tC is "Touring Coupe". It's not TOYOTA anything. Get off the idea that they tried to put some hidden meaning behind the name.

whoa.. that things got some good features but some things need to get changed: that huge front end (a bit more aerodynamic would be better), and the rear kinda reminds me of a herse.

Okay, for one, dealers don't know diddly. They just sell the cars. They are salesmen. They do not work for Toyota. tC is TOURING COUPE. Put it to rest.

"Why not xC, you ask? Well, Volvo has the rights to that with its XC90. The tC stands for Touring Coupe. And the name Scion, what does that mean? According to the trusty Merriam-Webster online dictionary, a scion is a descendant. This is logical, for Scion is Toyota's. Toyota understands that Gen Y buyers have different priorities, and that the cars should be designed to meet them."

omg it's the next toyotaCamry!

If this ever became a car for sale BY TOYOTA, I think a reasonable and VERY suitable name could be Toyota Block... cwm13.gif In my eyes, its just not like Toyota to make something so... so....un-stylish is the word. That is just my opinion though, flame me if you will.
