I'm going to kick off calls for the <s>un</s>official 2009 calendar.

Rules:
* Only one submission per 6gc.net member
* Only one submission per car
* Photos that have, or are materially similar to those, featured in calendars for previous years are ineligible for submission
* Photo must feature a 6th gen. Celica (d'oh). Heavilly modified cars (such as complete front-end conversions) are permitted
* <s>Deadline is 31st August midnight GMT</s>. I will extend the deadline by a few days but we really have to wrap this up soon.
* Minimum image dimensions: 1650x1275
* Recommended image dimensions: 3300x2550
* By submitting an entry, you are assigning a copy of your copyright to the Producers for the purpose of producing the 2009 calendar
* Include in the body of the email:
** Photographer's name & 6gc.net screenname
** Owner's name & 6gc.net screenname
** Details of the camera, fstop settings, film type (if appropriate) and any other technical details about the photography and image processing used that you want to share.

Additional rules for the front cover:
* Must feature at least five different 6th gen. Celicas
* Artistic license permitted (eg if you want to create a montage, collage or other mash up)
* Please include owner details for all cars featured
* Email subject line must clearly state the submission is for the front cover

If you submit an entry and then take a better photo before the deadline, you may email the address above and ask me to replace your original submission with the new one. Photos taken by the owner trump photos taken by another member in the event of a conflict of the rules at the top of this post.

Here's where BloodyStupidDavey & GriffGirl are at with it as of today. GriffGirl has found a way to have these made on an as-ordered basis so no one actually had to go directly through her; once the calendar is available for sale, they will be shipped within 24 hours of placing the order. They will be full color, full bleed spiral bound 11" x 17" and will cost $24.95 plus shipping (about five bucks for shipping in the US, a little more for Int'l.) If you order them in multiples (say the whole Houston crew wants to go in and have them all shipped to one presumably not floated away location) there are quantity discounts that increase in percentage with the qty. ordered. 2-11=5% off, 12-49=10%, etc.

We feel very strongly that images that will appear in the calendar shall be chosen by poll, but GriffGirl will dictate which images will go into that poll, to be determined solely by using her professional judgment as to whether or not the image is viable for print or not. Having almost 15 years of experience as a graphic designer, GriffGirl is more than qualified to make this assessment. If we feel there is an image that is not suitable for print, we will contact the person who submitted it and request a higher resolution image. If one cannot be provided, it will not be considered for publication. Once that assessment is made, our decisions will be final and not open for discussion. We are not going to produce crap so someone's feelings don't get hurt. If you don't like the rules, don't buy a calendar.

errrm, and how come this 'dictatorship' has emerged?

I'm sure everyone appreciates that someone is willing to make an effort but isn't this a little 'forward'?

Hopefully it will be a benign dictatorship. In the last few years everyone has assumed that someone else would do something with the result that nearly every year the unofficial calendar either hasn't happened or has been very late. This year I thought I would take the initiative. If the community doesn't think I am up to the job or someone else wants to volunteer then I will gladly step aside. It is a thankless task.

QUOTE

I just wanted some easy way to track an individual car without any effort. I almost typed registration number but then realised that people would likely be twitchy about sharing that. Serial number seems pretty low risk -especially considering vairous threads about SR model registries, GT4 registries, earliest 6th gen. celica, latest 6th gen. celica and so on.

Oh, and I have sent an email to Coomer as a courtesy.

I just would have expected a
'hey guys what shall we do about the calendar' thread

rather than a
'This is exactly what you must do in my calendar' thread

and do you not think you're taking it a bit far with all the rules? If 2 pictures look the same, don't use them both. I don't give out any details about my car's ID and i don't recommend others to do so either. I am sure there are plenty of people stealing and cloning cars that would love to get their hands on details of cars appearance and ID information. You can't be too careful mate.

There are people here who are careful about who has pictures of their car and how they are used, and rightly so.

Not having a go, i commend your enthusiasm, just maybe could have gone about it better matey thumbsup.gif

HMMMM - Might I make a sugestion? I've seen this with other car enthusiast calendars and I always thought it made them look a cut above the regular BS calendar:
Can we have a small picture in picture [if you will - or picture on the calendar portion of the fold out real small up in the corner] that highlights one particular section of that car [ie the trunk shot for Audio nuts, the engine bay for highly modded cars, the interior for Interior nuts etc]?
Man - I am explaining this poorly. Allow me to demonstrate [for example only]:

Yes I know the picture sux, yes I know the layout sux, no I'm not submitting this for calendar inclusion [ laugh.gif ] - it's just a quicky sketch to show you what I mean. The small highlight picture can also be placed next to the month above the grid showing the days for those of you who are so in love with your own photography that you can't imagine anyone sticking something else in the view rolleyes.gif .
it would just liven the calendar up a bit so that it doesn't look so boring. Simple picture with calendar below = bleh and been there and done that.

to BloodyStupidDave... & to manphibian:

IMHO... timing is just fine. I believe we all remember calendar 2008 story kindasad.gif. So I think is better having it ready on Noverber than on February... Also I like that idea of clear rules however not all of them.

1. I will not send anywhere my VIN or my current registration. If anyone wants unique id of my picture just name it "Malpaso" or "SS-four" (no one is using this because it's my invention wink.gif)
2. "links to the image" is that mean I must find server where I can share high-res image? Photobucket.com allows only up to 1024x768 if I remember right... Why not just sending them attached by e-mail?
3. Info about my camera and settings????? Who cares? I do care what is in the picture not what camera has been used...

...and in the other hand some info is missing:
1. Type of file is not important? What if I do not send *.jpg but *.bmp (less compression, higher quality)?
2. What if I make widescreen pictures? So aspect ratio not 1.3 but 1.7?
3. Are acceptabe all art-styles of picture? (blured background, less saturated background, effects with light, effects with contrast, HDR, etc.)???

1. I wasn't asking for VINs just the 5 or 6 digit serial number. As you are the second person to raise concerns about this, I'll delete this rule.
2. If you want to attempt to send me the attachment then by all means do so. But be aware that large uncompressed images may be against your ISPs acceptable use policy, can cause problems for mail servers and may get bounced for being over a mail server's message size limit. My mail server has a 10MB limit but your mail server may have a lower limit.
3. If you don't want to share camera and processing info then that is fine. There are a few photographers on here that would be interested in such info and I was planning to put some of the info inside the back cover.

Second set of questions:

1. I can work with pretty much any common file type but most print houses prefer jpeg or png format. This means that if you submit in a different format then whoever gets the calendars made may need to convert it to jpeg or png before printing. I'm sure whever takes on that task will work with the original photographer and do their best to get a first class conversion of the image but if you are at all worried about this step or would like to retain control you may want to consider submitting in jpeg or png format.
2. If I produce the calendar then the paper will be 11x8.5". Just like last year, if you want to letterbox the image yourself then you are welcome to, otherwise the producer/printer will do that for you.
3. As far as I am concerned, anything goes. Personally, I really like the ideas suggested by DEATH and 808celica. One thing to bear in mind: as the rest of the community will be voting, it might be wise to appeal to the masses.

I know I listed a lot of "rules" but I really want this to be a lightweight process. Consider them more as guidelines - my motivation was to maximise the likelyhood of getting a quality product at the end of the process and to try to make things relatively fair.

You can save the images as JPEGs if you use the highest setting (12) and keep it RGB. If the pixel dimensions are large enough, you can even reduce it to 150 dpi if it's higher than that. Compression shouldn't be an issue, and it won't sacrifice image quality. BMP really isn't practical. What's most important is that people taking pictures use the HIGHEST resolution setting on their cameras. Even better, if you can, the images should be saved on your camera as RAW files (not JPEGs) and then you can convert to JPEG when you upload it to your computer. The fewer times the image is resaved as a JPEG, the least amount of loss you'll have w/the image.

I congratulate him.

glad to see someone is stepping up to the task.

Please do not hassle him. Send what you wish to him, I see where he was getting at with the serial # stuff. That way I cannot send pics of tufy's car and call it my own etc. then tufy comes after him, he has some proof that one of us is full of it.

Keep up the hard work! My car will hopefully hands down make it onto the 2010 or 2011 calendar wink.gif

It's important for you guys to know that you CANNOT take a small picture and just bump it up in photoshop to make it "fit". Increasing image size results in a decrease in resolution/photo quality, particularly if you're resizing the image more than about 20%. You can downsize, but you really can't upsize so much.

^ True, one of last years was terrible frown.gif

Anyway, with the lack of other volunteers, i guess it's over to you Davey. I'm sure you'll do a great job thumbsup.gif

The printing and everything was good last year so maybe we could use the same one if Dan (playr) could hook you up? I think to keep costs down for the majority, they should be shipped out from US/Canada.

Which one turned out poorly? I never saw the printed version. I could guess, a couple of them were a little on the "iffy" side. . . you can PM me which one it was if you want so no one gets offended or anything. It's my fault anyway, I'm the one who did all the photoshop work on last year's calendar. (2008 you meant, right?)

Oh yeah, I remember that! That was my attempt to fix it! Actually I don't think I had anything to do with the wrong file printing in that case. Meh - coulda been. IDK since I only did the photoshop work and had nothing to do with the actual calendar itself.

And yeah, not like I got paid for it or anything! Maybe if I help out this year someone will kick me down a calendar. biggrin.gif

Depends on the age. Most cameras currently on the market can take those resolutions but a few years ago only the professional cameras were capable.

basic. i usually shoot my still shots in Av mode with ISO 100 the F-stop level depends on how sunny it is and the Shutter speed in Auto.

but more of it comes form the Circular Polarizer and the Editing(which takes a lil bit to get good at, i just recently started to get better at it)

my submission should be in within the next couple days

I agree with death, is there any problem with extending this another month or so? I mean how long do you need Davey? To have all the pictures, have them judged and get things rolling in order to have them out in time for next year? Please remember I have no idea what all it takes to put it all together thats why I am asking.

If you get the other members consent, I'd think that it should be fine. Remember, last year had a picture from a meet that was on the east coast that was pretty cool.

edit: come to think of it, I should look through the recent pics of my car and see if there is anything worth submitting.

It takes time to put these things together. A deadline is a deadline. You have had a LONG time to get pics, if it got moved a month there will be just as many people asking for another month etc....

drop it down to 100 and just use the f-stop meter to change lightness and darkness of the picture. usually on a sunny day i keep it in the middle or +1

I understand a deadline is a deadline but last time I heard Davey has only had a handfull of pictures submitted. My car is sadly no longer in shape for decent pictures as my step mother (crazy) slashed all my tires and broke the winshield. So with it still being handled by the courts atm I have no money to fix the winshield or put new tires on my new rims so here I sit with a smashed winshield and a set of craigs list rims and tires. So "IF" there are not enough pictures submitted by the deadline would there be a chance for a slight extension? Like I said earlier I understand these things take time but if there are not enough submissions as is will the whole calander idea be tossed aside? Either way put me down for a calander once they are done since there is always next year to get my car in the calander (hopfully).

So I am wanting to submit a pic or2 (one is the engine bay) but I don't have a server that will allow me to link that large of a picture. Also I would like to know if anyone would be willing to clean up the pic a little and add the engine bay pic because I don't have PS.
Thanks

guys. Looks like this WILL NOT be happening unless someone takes over now and everyone re-sends their pics to them.

the aptly named BloodystupidDavey hasn't responded to PMs and hasn't been on since August 5th. What a guy. rolleyes.gif

So i guess we need a volunteer to take this over pretty quickly if you want it to happen....

Hi Guys,

Sorry I haven't been around for a while - been very busy with work. For those of you in the Technology business you'll probably recognise the terms IFA and IBC as trade exhibitions that take up way too much time frown.gif

Unfortunately, I have received very few submissions (I think 8 so far). Unless this changes in the next few days, I really don't see the calendar happening this year. I'll put all the submissions so far up on a server so we at least have a start on the 2010 calendar.

Agreed, nothing against davey, I understand people get busy. I would just like to
see someone doing this that is on more than once a month. The whole non coomer
approved thing bothers me still and I am sure it will be the same this year, as he is
on less than davey. I personally think if someone can make this happen its griff.

Thanks, I am not so happy with most of my efforts so far with my canon but I am learning.
Sadly almost all of the high res shots I have taken are gone due to an unfortunate
hard drive crash. frown.gif The older stuff from my sony I still have but they are not even
close to the res requirements. I'll try to get something to you in the next few days.

I'm more than happy to pick this up if Davey is too slammed with work and what-not. I'll need to dig around a little on line to find the best deal/way to get these printed, but I can totally do this, no problem.

BSD- I'll wait to hear back from you as to whether you'd like to hand this off or not. I certainly don't want to step on your toes, since you picked up the project this year of course. Let me know how you'd like to proceed. smile.gif

Also - any mods reading this - if I do pick this up, I'd please like permission to use the 6gc logo! Christian is hard to get a hold of so I'm hoping one of you other guys sees this! Please PM me.

I sent a winter shot to Davey. If someone else is going to be doing the calender, I'll send it to them for consideration. I might do a bit of photo-chopping to clean it up a bit, but who knows if it's actually going to happen. It's basically the larger version of my Sig.

wow this is a cluster fvck.
I hope you get this together. We had a pretty nice one out last year. If you need to give the reigns over to Griff, she did A LOT for me last year..

Also I think these pictures need some more thought consideration

96bluevert
crashjoey21

They are cut off car shots? not very clean (and i use this term loosely since its not supposed to be) "professional" shots.
1/4 of a a bumper missing? the 1st foot of a car?! I think this could be better..

and get those missing submissions!

(Malpaso, thats a great pic! you always turn out for the calender wink.gif )

If this is going to be a good calendar you need A LOT more submissions. You should have atleast 3 options for every month that would be voted on.

I agree that we should have a lot more submissions before we try to get a calendar in print. There are so many nice cars on this forum and so many people have posted calendar pictures in threads. We should wait for more submissions prior to making it official.

Yup, got it this time - thanks. Just checked - assuming you used the same email, it doesn't appear to have got to googlemail first time around.

Okay so I'm assuming you're going to continue on with this since you haven't responded to my post about picking it up. Cool... let me know though if you need me to do anything.

As a side note - having done calendars before (and having worked in publishing for several years) I agree that there needs to be WAY more submissions. Looking at some of them, I can already see that at least 1 that I looked at isn't print quality. Additionally, I strongly disagree with anyone specifically submitting their images for the cover shot. I think all of the images should be given equal consideration and personally, the cover image should be voted on by the members here. As it stands, with only one image submitted specifically for cover consideration, that means it'll be on the cover simply because none others were submitted. Personally and professionally, I don't think that image is worthy of a cover. That's just my opinion though.

i would love to design a cover for this but my graphic design studio class is killing me with work. and i agree that a couple of the submission arent calendar quality.

oh and im not complaining but my image was in raw quality and was 3888x2xxx and now it has been reduced. why is that? im pretty sure my email didnt scale it down

Maybe you sent me the wrong image? I've just checked and I definately have a .jpg from you - It is definately 1944x1294. If you have a higher resolution version then we can swap it out - it isn't a problem. I know others have emailed me lower resolution images and said in their emails that they have higher resolution available if their photo gets picked.

Everyone, please do check all the details listed including credits and resolutions and let me know of any errors or omissions.

Thanks for the offers of help, Griffgirl. Just a reminder to everyone that while I can get these printed myself, I would prefer that someone else take over once the finalists are announced as per my original post.

In my original post I asked for multi-car shots for the cover. I disagreed with any one member being represented on the cover - I felt that 6gc.net was a community and so it would be nice to have a community shot. So far, only one member has bothered to submit a multi-car shot. Hopefully that will change but I agree that if it doesn't then voting across all the submissions should happen for fairness.

I just popped a new one over to Davey. Different picture, but still winter, and a much bigger size. Couldn't find the large copy of the original.

Here's a link for people to check it out with:

Thanks for the clarification on the cover shots... I actually might have one that's respectable that's a multi-car shot, I'll pull it up and see if it's any good much less print quality.

As for taking the calendar over, I'm more than happy to once the finalists are decided upon. I'd like to reserve the right to use alternate selections though if any of the shots turn out to be unfit for printing, just as jpeg ghosting, artifacts, etc. I'm working on downloading a photoshop filter or valid serial# that Supersprynt turned me on to (since I don't have the $$ right now to actually pay for it) so if I'm able to get that filter, that should help some actually. Naturally the use of the filter would be for demo purposes only and not as an act of piracy, as I do not condone software piracy. wink.gif

The texas meet yielded some pics of a large number of cars - someone better qualified would have to say whether or not they are cover worthy tho. i have no skill or much knowledge of photography.
please note these are Snapshotgt's pics - I can't and won't submit them because of that. That descision is obviously up to him.

Just a thought.
What about the ECG's pics from this year? Or were they on the cover last year?
