I have a Celica AT200, and is currently looking for some new wheels and tires. What is the perfect wheel size on my Celica? I am planning to lower it too.

Any answers will be appreciated! smile.gif

17s are seriously the way to go, I've had 14/17/18 and 17s are a great compromise of weight and looks.

Ah, they look great! You have lowered your car, right?

Will f.ex 235/40/18 fit my car without rubbing?

Bigger rim=lower profile of tire

low profile tire=rough ride

I believe 17s are the compromise between looks and comfort actually besides weight that is.

I have 16"s just so ive less unsprung weight. Toyota put 16" on the car so if its good enough for them... smile.gif
17"s would look better but Super Strut doesnt appreciate heavy wheels.

im positive the roads are better in norway then in new york so 18's would be a good choice. i have 17's now because the 18's looked like stop signs after a year haha

How wide are your 16" rims, and what size tires are you using?

rule of thumb. if the automaker put it on it is probably the best best. 15's are stock. 16's are ok. anything else is really for show and not for performance.

For comparison purposes, does anyone know how much the 15" alloy stock GT rims weigh?

your rule of thumb isn't very good. Most things automakers put on are for safety /detuned and are no optimal.
They are designed for a specific market.

If that was the case there would be no modding at ALL required.

There is truly no perfect wheel size - it is all about you the driver and your preference. Some say 18, 17, 16, 15, get the idea?

Looks = 18, performance = 16.
Forged = light + expensive.
Cast = Heavy + cheap.

i understand your point. i'm just saying that toyota put 15's and 14's on the 6gc. so that car is built for that size rim. you can go bigger, but on cars especially for rims what is comes stock is what is meant to be. oil and rims are two examples. when you go with bigger rims the speedometer is screwed up and heaviness is also a factor. i won't go much bigger then 16's or 17's if you want performance. but if you them want show go bigger.

Thanks, I think I will chose 235/225/215 - 40 - R17". This will fill nicely?

Do I need a lowering after these wheels? Or is it the same?

Wow, you ain't lying. They do look like 18s. laugh.gif I just bought today some 17" Drag DR-13 wheels for daily driving so I can send my Enkei RS-6s to the machine shop to repair the curb damages and dents so I can send them for powdercoating. I see that the tire looks pretty wide. I'm going to test them now to see if they fit. If not, I will be a very pissed man. Got the guy to let them go for $350 with some worn-off tires that need replacement. I think it was a good price. They have a few scuffs but look decent from far away.

im glad this thread came about! ive been considering ditching my 215 40 r 17 khumo's they are too thin! it seems like the consensus here is 225-235 40or 45... seems to help reduce that wheel gap. can more people post pics of their 225's and 235's maybe?

I have Tein S-Tech springs and KYB GR-2 shocks. With the Michelin Pilot Primacy tires (225/45/ZR17) my rims brought, there is no gap in the front. The tire is tucked in a finger height inside the wheel well. In the rear, there's a two finger height gap (my fingers are thin as heck). tongue.gif

in this case 17s is the best IMO. not too big not too small either just right, and you can put beffy tires if you want, which im trying to go for, but im still debating on wether to get the rpf from enkei or 5 zigen fno1rc, im looking forward on getting a set when i get my tax money, i just ordered my lowering springs about an hour ago and im excited to install them already...

Found a picture of a Celica with the rims I am planning to buy:

(Front/Rear: 8.0" x 18" + 225/40/18 Tyres)

Will this rub? And is the car lowered on the picture? And: What do you think? I have a black car too..

On a black car, these rims look really good, but I think 18" rims are almost too big.
It looks like the car is lowered a little bit and with these rims you should avoid any chuckhole, if not, you might get a little problem. wink.gif

I imagine if you want the 18's that perform (are really light weight) you're either sacrificing style, or you're spending a butt-load of cash on them... lol.

I'm in the process of buying some lighweight 17" wheels to replace the stock 16" on my GT4.

Theres lots of pot holes near me and I don't want a bumpy ride or to damage the suspension, so I wondered what the largest profile tyre is I'd get away with?

Prefferably I'd like 225/55/17. What do you guys think, would this be ok or would it rub?

Also I was wondering if you compared a 205 tyre to a 225 tyre....when inflated is it likely that the 205 would look smaller side on from the 225 and in a way giving you a little extra profile?

Thanks Ian

Its real difficult to tell what the perfect rim and wheel combo is. There is offset, width, tire size, ride height, and camber angle that has to be factored in. However, from the pictures, others can give you ideas on how they look and what their specs are.

good plan on the lightweight 17s
think about 17x8 oz's, they are super light and beautiful and popular on gt-fours
225/45/17 fills the fender, i really doubt that 225/55/17s would fit
also the 225/45/17s should be enough rubber to cushion the pot holes

im in the process of searching for a good price on some 15 or 16" wheels. Although a buddy said he'd give me his GTS wheels for free, so i might just call it a day on those. Im saving my money for tires. besides, its a headache finding a good lightweight wheel in 5x100 in my price range.

Some celica's i've seen on heere look really good with 17 and 18" wheels, and if your going for a good look, it all depends on the flow of the rest of your car. but it call comes down to what you like, because hey, ur driving it. lol

from personal experience, anything 17+ will not give you a "performance upgrade" regardless of how light they are. The only acception would be the width, but for a 6th gen celica, you chouldnt be using anything over 8" width anyway, and there is a good selection of 15 and 16" wheels that go up to 8" widths. your getting that wider stance that might be needed to balance your driving style (once again, depending on the type of racing you are doing).

im building my celica for mostly the ST class in SCCA autocross, and plan to attend an HPDE or PDX event here and there, but i dont plan on being uber competitive due to the lack in parts available for the 6th gen (i.e. polyU. bushings, control arms, lower arm bars, etc.). the rules say i cant go over a 7" width, so im looking for any 15" or 16" wheel up to 7" width, preferably under 15 lbs. but with my broke college budget, i might just settle for the GTS wheels, and save money for tires and coilovers (ksports).

anyway, sorry to rant, but basically what im saying is 17+ is too much for the 6th gen performance wise. And i would have to strongly agree with what was said earlier about the manufacturer putting on a factory wheel size for a reason. safe, reliable, and well balanced with the rest of the suspension.

225/45/17 fills the fender, i really doubt that 225/55/17s would fit
also the 225/45/17s should be enough rubber to cushion the pot holes

Thanks for the reply. Trust me the holes around me are bad!! I think that 225/55/16 is actually slightly bigger overall than a 225/45/17.

Therefore how about 225/50/17 as a compromise? Is there an actual way of finding out before buying or is it just a matter of trying?

Guys, you must have very good roads all around to use these size of tires, previous owner of my GT, who lives in Germany (great new road everywhere, no speed limit on highways) had 17" 215/40, it looked nice but I´ll kill chassis after few kms here in Czech Republic because of terrible roads :

So I´ve decided to keep original 15" rims, it´s nothing special but it´s more for performance and not just for look so I like it :

Btw: what is your approx. fuel consumption on 215 or 225 tires ?

i understand your point. i'm just saying that toyota put 15's and 14's on the 6gc. so that car is built for that size rim. you can go bigger, but on cars especially for rims what is comes stock is what is meant to be. oil and rims are two examples. when you go with bigger rims the speedometer is screwed up and heaviness is also a factor.

As a rebuttal,

You can put larger rims on the car - it is the rolling diamter that influences the speedometer - yes it may be hard to get perfect, but will not be a big difference - maybe 3-5mph IF you are attempting to match original rolling diameter.

As for what it is meant for statement - once you change your springs/sprint rate that disproves your reason. With higher spring rates you are no longer in the " what it is meant to be" category if you were to keep the rims/tires stock.

As for weight the stockers are lead coffee cup coasters - many of the wheel/tire combos available are lighter than stock - though at the extreme end of the spectrum you would need seriously spending 18-19" rims to match the weight of stock - though this is also effected by rotational mass and where specifically the weight is that has the larger effect on performance, but that is a discussion for another time.

To determine rolling diameter and changes to speedo - there are several online calulators that will compare stock to the proposed wheel/rim.

As for the OP question - I am a big fan of 17s on the 6gen - all the 6gens I have seen around with decent rims (Focal/cheap crap excluded) that are 17" just seem to fit the profile/lines of the car so well. Also leaves a little meat between the road and you so ride is decent.

Sounds great. I have been looking for 215/40R17 right now, but do I need to drop it to make it look good?

These wheels is a big interest:

15-16x7= best for track use
17+= style and slight track use.

it all comes down to what you will be using it for
