So heres the situation. Im 18 years old, and my parents came up on a 1995 toyota celica gt. Its got 176k on the body and only 60k on a swapped 5sfe. Ive been reading alot about this car to try and learn the basics and what not, but i cant seem to get this down. I would LOVE to turbo my car considering the engine doesnt have many miles on it, but im not sure how to considering i have the tighest budget that can be. Can anyone help me here, im just a young one wanting to have a fast car like the big boys ha

First of all, Welcome to the site.
I'm not exactly sure what your question is, but from what I understand, you want to turbo your Celica, but you are on a tight budget. What is your budget and how far are you planning to go? What are your goals? -------------------- |

well pretty much, its my second car, my first was a honda crx, but it was stolen from the front of my house, so my parents picked this one up for $1200. not bad i say ha, but i pretty much just want to make the car waay quicker and i love the way the turbos sound and run considering my bestfriend has an evo and it pulls pretty dam hard turboed. not quite sure of the budget yet, but u know its pretty low if u get my flow considering im young and dont have a job yet. Ive seen the ebay turbos and i found one for $399, but im not quite sure thats a good turbo and i dont wanna blow anything and just waste all that money for nothing

Turbo, intercooler, fuel management system, piping, exhaust, it all adds up. You're looking at least at $2000.

no your looking at average middle of the road there, thats not even including a new clutch which you will most likely need if your going to run more than 9lbs of boost, trust me i have looked into the options about a turbo, hell you could ask almost anyone on the site and most of them have looked into the option, and this is not the thing that you want to cheap out on

Yea, a good advice for your situation is keep the motor healthy, changle oil every 2500 miles, do maintenance and save up money till you have enough to turbo the Celica the right way. Don't go cheap or cut corners.

^^^^^^Second that motion.
You could go the cheap way and maybe get away with doing the job for a little over a grand w/ second and third hand parts... Then again I'd be shocked if those parts or your car lasted for more than a month. This post has been edited by cardshark525: Jan 11, 2010 - 11:39 PM |

if your going to turbo make sure you do your homework. look into all the things you will need to reach your power goal (which you shoudl try and establish b4 going any further i would think) .. and like some of the guys have already said you dont want to go the cheap way out, because from what ive read from some of the guys on the site, once you turbo your car your engine almost becomes more vunlnrable for injury is one way to put it. ppl run into problems that you have to maintain alot and you dont want cheap parts that are going to bust on your 3rd run on the streets and look stupid. save up and do your hw and rread he thru the threads.. good luck man and welcome to the AMAZING world of celicass =]

Sorry junior, you gotta to pay to play. Listen to Lagos. He knows his stuff forwards and backwards. The best thing you can possibly do for that car is keep it running. Everyone here has said it perfectly. Always change your oil, take care of the car, and wait for the money to come for a complete turbo. Then save up a lot more money, because things can and will go wrong. Your car is NOT your friend's Evo. Your car is going to need a LOT of money and a LOT of work to boost it. Then by the time you get all of that done, you've got more wrapped up in your car than what it's worth. Your best bet is a 3S-GTE swap. Do a search for that; there is plenty of information on it. But for the next few years of your life, you've got a car that looks good without the power to back it up, and it's going to stay that way unless you win the lottery. -------------------- "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's writings, so that you shall gain easily what others labored hard for." -Socrates. If you really want to turbo your 5s save 1500 that should be okay for a turbo set-up. Will it last? Depends on how much studying you have been doing. Like Art said you gotta pay to play. You can't base your turboing decision the way a turbo sounds, that's just silly. And you can't compare our celicas to your buddys evo. That's a newer car with better technology. If you want to learn the hard way, go ahead and turbo your car. If not get a job, save up and you can do what ever the hell you want with the money you've earned. Life is easy when you're in high school and living with mom and dad. If you REALLY want to stil boost it, sure we'll help you and can help you source parts for cheap. Let me tell you this much, the most enjoyable thing about the 6th gen is handling.having a fun handling car beats the crap out of a car that can't get traction for the life of it.

the 57TRIM T40de Ebay turbo cost less than a CT, and shannon ran it for sevral years at 16psi.
even cheaper ![]() I would talk to paul (bmj76) he's putting together a SUPPPER inexpensive turbo for himself. I don't no the exact value hes invested but its not a bad build for a boosted 225-250hp @ 10-12psi 5s-fte This post has been edited by Mstoochn: Jan 13, 2010 - 8:22 PM |

going cheap on a turbo build is probably one of the worst things to do. it can be done but a better turbo build will give better returns and save you more money in the long run

i am not going super cheap but yes i am planning to run an ebay turbo. the rest of the parts im waiting until i find the best deals i can. the cheapest setup i can think of would be stock 3s manifold, ct26, stock downpipe for the ct26, safc II, rx7 injectors, walbro 255 fuel pump, ebay intercooler kit, welding fitting on stock oil pan, boost gauge oil pressure gauge and wideband. i may have missed a few little things but thats the bulk of it

Save your pennies, do your homework, and re-evaluate your goals. are you after a fast car? do you want to turbo this car just so you can say you turbo'ed it? What are your HP goals? can you afford to be without this car for a few days when something breaks?
These are all valid questions you need to straighten out before you accidently get in over your head. With that said, welcome, good luck, and enjoy the ride. -------------------- '99 Celica GT - Sold

I highly doubt your celi will ever be as fast as a evo unless u convert it to awd and such just my opinion. I've been reading and searching this site on swaps, parts, prices, ext. I think if you want it done right you need around 5K or so. So just save I've been saving for about 4 months and have about 3K so just save save save.

The 5sfte is an AMAZING setup. It is tons of fun, and if you arent looking to be the fastest guy on the block...you will enjoy it for years to come.
We pushed SuperShannon77's car up to 285whp and 300ftlbs (340hp 369ftlbs) at 17psi and the car was A LOT of fun. I understand that a swap isnt for everybody, as I was there was once also. I felt more confident in my abilities to turbo Shannons 5sfe then to swap the motor at that point in time. If you are looking for a COMPLETE turbo kit from oil filter relocation, injection, SAFC, turbo, custom DP, etc...I am selling the turbo kit off of Shannons car for 1200 shipped for everything. PM if you are interested. --------------------

another place to source parts is MR2oc.com i have found several stock manifolds for about 20-50 bucks, CT-26s go for about 100. its the piping that will be your biggest expense.

Im happy with the stock numbers but I know these cars can do some serious damage to the competion when turboed. |

Pressure helped with the build of Shannons kit. And I'm pretty sure her kit is 99% of what you need. I think the only part not in there is the exhaust from the dp to the back of the car. And of course you would have to go and have it tuned.

Besides that, do I really have to relocate the oil filter? Imma little scared about that. ![]() |

You will not find a more complete turbo kit then the one I am selling.
As for relocating the oil filter...it all depends on your turbo kit design...but for the most part, yes you will have to relocate it. And my kit comes with an oil filter relocation kit. --------------------
