Today at work I had my mind blown. I work in a doctors office and many of the doctors have really nice cars. I started talking to the one doctor about his car. Its an audi s5 and he had it built to his liking. I was telling him how beautiful I thought it was. Later, he went out to put the top up before it started to rain so I ran out and asked him if he could pop his hood for me so I could see the engine. He looked at me with a shameful face and said "sure, but I have no idea how to pop it" he than gave me his manual and asked me to help him. I popped it and admired it for a little while. Then, One of the other doctors came out and asked us what we were doing and talked to us a bit. Later, the doctor that came out to talk to us came to me and said he was jealous I didn't ask to see his engine so I said "sure, I'd love to see it".He has a mercedes E350. As we start walking to his car he tells me "btw, I don't know how to pop my hood either" I just couldn't believe it. He took a few minutes to try and figure it out but I just walked over and popped it for him. I told another doctor my disbelief that they couldn't pop their hood. That doctor, a third doctor laughed and said "I can't pop mine". I was shocked. I mean I understand these are brand new cars but I just imagined that popping a hood was a simple task and after spending that much money you may just want to simply admirer your engine.

Anyway, I just wanted to share because I thought maybe someone else could appreciate how shocked I was that these people have these beautiful cars and have never looked at their engine. They also have never washed their own cars. If I spent that much money on a car I know for sure no one else would be washing it or touching it and that I would be washing it often.

Any thoughts?

People like that want nice cars like we do, but want to do it the easy way and have all the money in the world to do so (since they're doctors and more than likely rolling in it). I, personally, hate having something and not knowing how to take care of it. My first thought was "how do they check their oil!?" but then thought that those cars just have a dinger that tells them if the oil is low and then they pay like $100 to have a technician at the dealer top it off (big exaggeration laugh.gif ).

Lol. I think they are just clueless as to how to "pop" the hood. It seems a lot of people who have cars like that don't really know jack about them. Just so long as it runs and still looks good.

The one doctor told me today that the dealer charges him $300 to change his oil. He said he went somewhere else who charged him $100. He was like but you have to understand they said its full syntectic so its more. I was thinking I use full synthetic and do it myself for what maybe $40.

I personally think you should know the basics of working on a car before you can ever drive one. Even if I didn't know anything about cars at least I would be able to open the Hood...lol it's sad when I know more about a car than a Dr. That has all that money to spend on a car. If I had a new car like that I'd be all over it. I think Kurt would be jealous of it....laugh.gif

it's a bonnet! This might help ya fella wink.gif.

QUOTE (supershannon77 @ Jul 20, 2012 - 12:00 AM) *

Any thoughts?

I bet there are two reason why they just do not know:

a) because they are rich - rich people do not need to "pop up the hood". They pay people doing this for them. More important is price tag (higher = better), fact it is foreign (exotic) car not seen to often around and if is V8 or not (so i bet that doctor with Mercedes has lower credit because having just V6 wink.gif).
b) because they are doctors - doctors and engineers are smart. They have the same level of brain power BUT one in technical and second in humanities (I believe it is sorted like "humanistic" and "non-humanistic" science area... do not know how to explain it better in English smile.gif). If technician want to connect two things he know there is some kind of cement needed (which one depends on material and demands)... If doctor wants to connect two things together he wait till it grow together it self (because it usually do wink.gif) using bandage for a while.

I learned this on university when professor of biology explained us how human cell works two different ways. One as "usual book" describes it and second likening it to machine (functions of each part, connections between them and working conditions)... first description I did not get much, second way was like "turning on light bub". Suddenly I saw everything smile.gif.

btw.: off topic... just found that used Audi S5, 30k miles on the clock, year 2009 costs the same as new Toyota GT86 here ($41.000). Guss what I would buy having spare 40k us dollars biggrin.gif.

here's my take on it.

these drs don't know how to pop the hood of their car because they dont need to. Sure, they probably had to take care of their car back in high school or med school. But how long ago was that? Yes, they make plenty of money, but they also work long hours and don't have spare time for playing with a car. Essentially, their time is too valuable to bother learning about the car they have.

Also, they may not have an appreciation for the mechanical aspects of their cars, but rather an ascetic, visual appreciation for them.

of course they just pay other people to pop it for them. here's the dealer charges:

drive car in - $50
pop hood - $150
change oil - $100

easily adds up.

BTW, you should've started charging after the first doctor. could've made some profit. laugh.gif laugh.gif

Isn't it relatively the same on every car, where you pop the hood?
I could see not being able to pop the gas door, or trunk, cause those tend to change locations by make of car, but damn, not knowing how to pop your hood?

I once saw a nice 5th gen celica parked on the side of the road. There was a guy and his daughter in the car and I asked if they needed any help, the guy told the car just died on them. I proceed to ask him what was wrong with it and he was clueless so I told him to pop the hood so I could take a look at it. He had no idea what-so-ever how to pop the hood so I did it for him. I saw that the belt had broken so I told him. He thought that meant the engine was blown and he started freaking out a little. Before he had a chance to call a tow truck I ran to autozone and got a new belt for him, showed him how to put it on and I swear it was as if he just rebuilt the motor the way he was going on about it.

I think that some have been led to believe that engine work and knowing how to do simple maintenence is witchcraft, and I think a lot of this misdirection comes from hearing various mechanic's double speak. Of course there are those people who just don't care and one of my biggest pet peeves is people who buy a car without ever taking a look at the engine.

We have customers that come in all the time that are just like that. Very pricey cars, but no knowledge on how to do anything to them. It always makes me really happy to be able to go out and play with their overpriced car though smile.gif I don't understand how people don't have any idea how to check their fluids, regardless of their gender. Daddy or mommy should have showed you, or you should have at least taken an interest. Idk how rich you are. What happens when you're traveling and AAA can't get to you?

One thing that scares me though... ...these new Audi's have no dipstick. It's all computerized. It says right on the dash (or HUD depending on how much money you spend) "Add one quart of oil." What happens when that computer breaks and tells you to add at the wrong time?!

I had a customer standing outside with the oil cap off and his engine running on his brand new Audi A4 Quattro, basically watching the oil spray everywhere. He asks me, "Is this where the oil goes?" I immediately replied, "uhh yeah but you might want to turn your engine off first because your spraying oil everywhere!" He replied, "...oh right." frown.gif

Seriously, give the really nice cars to us with more experience. Let the idiots drive Sundance's and Neons!

Brilliant! For example, can't test-drive a 911 unless you can explain snap oversteer. That would weed out 99% of the buyers, and leave the enthusiasts. Or you can't have a Celica unless you wax lyrical about how much better it is than almost every other FF import of the era. Can't have any Ferrari until you can explain exactly at which point during the drive the "fizz" occurs for you; that'll weed out the rappers and rich playboys.

Haha, forgot I posted this. If they were trying to flirt with me they were going at it all wrong. If they were trying to check my ass out...which according to my 6yr old niece I don't have one(she told me that she saw underwear that makes you look like you have a bigger butt and she thinks I should buy them lolololol.) Well, anyway if they were trying to check it out then I screwed them bc I sat down in the drivers seat then pop the hood for them. The one dr offered to let me drive the audi s5 at lunch. I said no thanks but if i changed my mind I would let him kno. I don't need people in the office saying crap about how I drove his car and I also don't need god forbid something to happen and now I have to pay to have it fixed. Plus, I don't think the speed or anything will be much more impressive then my car and if it was I wouldn't push his car to to find out.

These men need to learn to flirt better if thats what they were doing laugh.gif

Your engine doesn't take 8qts of oil, have an underpanel that has to come off, have a horrible service system that takes 15 minutes to reset, and have a special $20 oil filter. $100 for syn with filter and reset is about right, $300 at the dealer was probably something like an A service which is every 10K and has a check list and tire rotation and cabin filter change and a bunch of other things which should be getting done to the car.
