APEXi AFC Neo, on a 96+ (pictures, installation, etc) Options

Dustin and I put in my SAFC a few weeks ago and just wired it in yesterday

I have not yet messed with any correction settings, nor have I figured out exactly what everything means and what it does. right now its just a 'glorified gauge'

if anyone has tested and found the ideal settings for the stock 7A, please share

WIRING:
on my stock '97 7AFE

I looked up the 96+ ECU wiring diagram, the pinouts from a 94-95 are the same but the wire colors are different. If you're installing an SAFC do not go by wire color only, use the wire colors as a guide but make sure they come from the correct pinout on the correct plug. in the 1997 Toyota Wiring Book one of the wire colors is wrong. (Note: this was done on an auto wiring harness plugged into a manual ECU. although I'm pretty sure the pinouts are the same, just some of my wires in the last connector do nothing and those with factory manuals probably won't have anything in those pinouts)


^when to splice or cut and where

E5 Connector (26 pin)
RPM Signal : pin #3 : BLACK/YELLOW wire on the harness
this goes to the GREEN wire from the SAFC
(Note: in the 97 Wiring Book it says this wire is Green/Yellow but splicing into that wire will disrupt your IAC and set your CEL. make sure you double check the pinout)

GROUND : pin #14 : BROWN
goes to BROWN on the ECU side
and BLACK on the engine side of the same wire
(Note: all the grounds eventually go to a junction connector and become one wire but I used the ground from the specific pinout just in case)

E6 Connector (16 pin)
MAP Sensor : pin #2 : BLUE
to YELLOW on the ECU side
and WHITE on the engine side

Throttle Signal : pin #11 : BLACK/WHITE
to GREY from the SAFC

E7 Connector (22 pin)
IG Power : pin #12 : BLACK/RED
to RED on the ECU side
and RED/WHITE on the engine side


Power : any wire that gets power with the key in the ACC or ON position : we used the GREY wire from the cigarette lighter



INSTALLATION:
Theres not really a nice place to mount it so I decided to get rid of the pocket under the radio and devise a way to hold it behind the center console trim. Theres a little ledge on the back side of the center console trim that holds it up perfectly against the bottom of the radio. Its not quite long enough so I still have to figure out a way to cover up the right side but heres the pictures...












and the different Monitoring modes are completely customizable, you can choose what you want to monitor and where its displayed:

i put my safc in the same spot, but i just used black velcro tape over top of that pocket under the radio. this way, if i need to hide the safc, i can just stick it inside of the pocket and close the door.

That's got some nice monotoring features on it. I hope it helps the car. I wouldn't mind something like that if the price was right. That would be under $200.

Awesome, I just installed my SAFC II in the GT this past weekend. I'm going to use it for my turbo install but is there any sort of tuning I could do N/A to get a little bit more power ? One thing that I would like to note is that the Map sensor on the 98 GT is also a blue wire, whereas on the 94-95 I believe its black/yellow.

he says how he took out 16% worth of fuel and his gauge still ran rich. i was skeptical of how he was monitoring this, and noticed that in his profile that he was just using a narrow band a/f gauge !!!!!

hurley, you shouldnt mess with any of the settings without having a WIDEBAND o2 sensor/gauge, or taking a trip to the dyno. you should talk to manny and see if you can book an hour at the dyno he uses and he should be able to do a nice tune with it for you. remember, it may look really cool and be tempting to play with, but its NOT a toy. it could lead to serous engine damage in the wrong hands.

Just got my RSM and NEO 2 days before Gonna be installing it in my SS pretty soon. I wasnt impressed of it much then i opened the box... I was actually hopind display of the NEO to be more acurate and brighter, and not looking like a VGA 16 color one... LOL

yea, guys, like art said, i wouldnt go by that guys thread..messing with settings, without a wideband o2 sensor, isnt really a good idea.
you REALLY need to know what your exact A/F ratio is. (not a rich/lean lightshow gauge)
pulling out a little fuel up top like he did is exactly what is needed on the 5s, but each individual motor requires its own settings.
steff, setting the RPM points is easy, just start @ your idle rpm, and work your way up to redline.
with the 16 rpm points, you have 4 more than the SAFCII, which will give you a total of 8 more tuning points. (hi and lo throttle)
from me ranting about it to D,lol he should understand the theory behind the unit and how it works...its pretty simple really.

I did the exact same thing. I fly often so I can put it in the pocket so people don't steal my "Satellite radio" LOL [thats what everyone thinks it is except tuners of course]

Does yours not display knock Hurley? I didn't see that in your list of display settings. The display itself and the case are much nicer than the SAFC-II but I don't know if I like any of the actual screen display styles. They should have kept the ones from the SAFC-II. Acouple of them were really nice and easy to read while driving.

the goal is to take out enough fuel, to where the car is running leaner and making more power, but still totally safe. running too rich or too lean will rob you of power. the idea is to find the perfect balance. that can really only be done right on the dyno. now the question of where that perfect balance is, will depend on what type of gas you fill up with. the higher the octain, the leaner you can go while keeping the motor safe.

If you had a wideband O2, you could want to tune a NA car to something like 12:1 all the way across right? Same thing with a turbo car but just more risky? A buddy of mine has been messing with his SAFC2 in his sr20det 240sx, and I just thought it might be a good idea to help him out before he screws the motor up. God bless that guy, he'll spend $300 on a SAFC2, and run with a broken power steering pump, broken brake booster, broken a/c, a leaky radiator, and he will still talk of his next investment to be an equal length up-pipe.

thats the one i have. ... it works great. however, in your case, i would just pay the 50bucks for dyno time and do all your tuning there. on a stock NA 7afe, you dont really have to monitor things at all times like you would on a turbo car.

I disagree. It never hurts to monitor everything. I would put a gauge on everything I could if I had the money and space on the dash. I don't trust the "idiot" lights. And gauges are really good tools for finding out what's wrong with a car when they break. Besides that, turbo or NA, it doesn’t matter. You’ll have problems in both. Turbo is just more prone to things because there is more stress on the motor from the forced air and most turbo cars and driven hard. But if you’re going to drive your NA Celica hard, get the tool to monitor it constantly. If you don’t, you’ll wish you had.

hehe , i'd take you out for a blast were you in the uk....
i am quite paranoid bou any damage happenin under the hood, hence all the gauges.. but weight aint an issue as i am not competeing in official sports etc...lol
hence why the leathers and full interior etc...
i'm happy with the 330bhp its runnin plenty quick enough for me...
and if i can give a bmw m6 a run for his money its plenty power,,,,lol

I know, I was very pleasantly surprised how well they worked


we cut out a piece of plastic to go there but it was close to impossible to fit it properly and make it stay flush with the center console trim in place... unless I were to glue it directly to the back of the trim piece, but I wanted something a little less permanent. I'll think of something soon, meanwhile you do the same and let me know if you come up with something
