Is it true that you really cant compare tread wear ratings from one brand of tire to the next? My current tire has a 400 tread and lasted me exactly 2yrs of boosted fun, with pretty good traction. For my next set im thinking of picking up a set of Nitto NeoGens. Problem is that they are only rated at 280 tread, and Im worried i wont be able to get at least 2yrs out of them. They seem to be getting rave reviews, despite the low wear rating.
Opinions?

i got exactly 2 yrs and 2 months on my set, and i did alot of driving, i had a 40 min commute to work for almsot all last year. SO i was driving around 100 miels a day and im always rough on tires. Im finally buying myhand set this week, i ran the tread all the way down to 1/32 and the stell belts still arent showing and i still have some traction. but i wont lie wet traction sucks when thread is that low of course lol, but best set of tires ive had so far, had kumho and falken before hand and didin approve of them

***hmmm im not boosted so that throws a lil curve ball in there,
but for the price they cant be beat
205/40 on ebay go for 268 shipped new
215/40 on ebay 336 shipped

price goes up as tread size goes up of course

hope any of that helps

its not so much "years" as much miles for which you should be basing tire wear on.
in any case, yea, art, all the diffrent companys have diffrent rating systems, which of course they dont explain..lol

well, for me, 2yrs = 20,000 miles.

I asked the guy at discount tire direct about this while ordering my new set today. He said the the wear ratings are only useful if you are trying to compare different tires from the same company, but totally useless when comparing 1 brand to another. He seems to think that the Nitto's will outlast the kumho ASX by a least 10k, even though the kumhos have a 400 tread rating and the nittos are 280. I guess I'll find out. The Nittos seems to be getting rave reviews from almost everyone.

I wanted those Nittos too. I talked to someone who had them and they told me "I guess they were pretty good, I don't really remember cause they wore out so fast". Thats when I gave in and got my Yokohama AVIDs with the 400 treadwear rating under Dustin's direction.

A lot of it depends on your car and driving style, along with your expectations for life. There are a bunch of reviews on discount tire direct about them. Most people say they last a long while as long as you rotate them. I guess ill find out. As long as I 20k out of them, I'll be happy.

He had an Integra but he burned the crap out of them. I figured they would be just like my Falkens, incredible for few months and sh*t once they get low.

I think you should get 20k out of them. Let me know how you like them.

alot of tire wear comes from scrub in turning, and of course spinning them.

i think you will get that life from them. they seem to be a better compound than khumo.

in my opinion, any descent tire will outlast a khumo and have more consistent performance grip wise.

the t1r's i have now that im waiting to wear out to trow on some new wheels/tires are takin a while. they have 20+miles on them now and still kickin.

i think you will be very happy with them =)

Got mine in the mail today. Man these things look beefy. The tread is really deep. You can tell they will grip really well and last longer then the kumho's. Cant wait to get them mounted.

What happened to the days that no one even CONSIDERED a tire that didn't come with a minimum 40k mile warranty on them? 20k miles just seems really low to me...

These same tires would probably last 40k on an ST without a problem.
Once you turbo, 20k life is considered excellent. smile.gif

kumho ASX tires are pretty much bottom-end tires. the nittos are still pretty cheap though. We don't sell a lot of nitto tires at my work so I'm not very familiar with them, but nobody really has anything good to say about kumho tires at all.

I got some yokohama AVS ES100's for free. they had about 4-5/32" on all of them when I got them. and within about 2 weeks, the front left tire had about 2/32". I rotated them back to front, and after only a few more weeks, now the the one I put on the left front has about 2/32" as well. boost is the destroyer of tires! lol. I'm gonna flip the tires so I can put the best tires on the left side now, hopefully that'll get me another 3-6 weeks of tire life before they're all at 2/32", hopefully giving me enough time to save up for wheels and tires.

Got them mounted today. I like them a lot.

Pros:
Excellent ride quality.
Great grip.
Really deep tread.
Very cool tread design.

Cons:
Very soft compound.

So far Im really happy with them. Time will only tell how long they will last, but I think I made a good decision.
