well, i bought the celica with hopes of getting Much better gas mileage than my other car. 1999 mustang 3.8 v6 5 spd. so i filled it up last week, set the trip, and today the trip meter hit 280 miles and i was due for a fill up. well, it took 14.4 gallons. it comes out to about 19.5 miles per gallon. my mustang gets 21 average! i've gotten up to 30!. this really was quite a let down. i still love the celica but is everyone getting such horrible mpg?
maintainance is kept up. runs great. plugs, wires, filters. only thing i can think of is it needs of an alignment. what else could be the problem?

thanks, sorry for knocking the celi's.

look at ur right foot, theres the culprit

its a four cylinder, slow acceleration, keep it below 3k rpm... and dont bring it above 60...

thatll save u alot of gass.....

i refused to admit to this untill i tried it for a whole tank keeping it under 3000 rpms and i got great gas milage....
over 400 to the tank i that makes a diff to u....

I have a 93 GTS with the 2.2 and I get about 25mpg highway, maybe 28 if I really tried but I can't help passing everyone on the road when I'm driving it biggrin.gif . I have a 99 Rav4 with the 2.0L verison of the same engine and even though it's a brick moving through the air I get about the same milage out of it.

its all about the style of driving....
drive to ur cars abilities, not urs.... lmao
it dissapoints me that the celicas mpg goes down soo much with speed......
worst point of the celica
even more than the cup holders....
my stepdads vette gets better gas milage than my car in just the sole reason it doesnt have to work as hard to get up to speed.......

i got to agree, its the right foot and the weight in the car, how many people et in your car. i would fill up my tank with 35$$ and it would take me from phoenix to vegas with still 1/4 tank, but i guess cruise control kind of helps with that

replace your primary 02 sensor. You should be getting at least 24-26 with a GT.

lol^.... I was going to say O2 sensor too, but just can't imagine a celica having only 19 mpg, due to a bad o2 sensor.

have you changed your spark plugs, oil, and air filters?
maybe that would be the problem

I get about 25-28 mpg. I drive fast and have the rpms running high and still get good mpg. I usually drive 40% city and 60% highway. I cruise @ 80mph @ 4k on the interstate and still get 25-28mpg. Your right foot must be made of lead bro. Even if you drove 100% city, your mileage shouldnt be that bad.

I drive in houston traffic EVERYDAY.... I got better gas mileage in the celica than I do in my acura TL.... I gotta agree with everyone else 25-28..... I took it to the track every friday so factor that in with the daily driving. On the week where I went downtown and drove houston traffic all week then ran the 1/8 mile all night friday and then went to baytown and ran the 1/4 all night saturday I averaged 22mpg racing all night 2 nights in a row on the same tank. So you seem to be used to a tad bit quicker acceleration and hence have a heavier foot on the take off. That is where you will burn a lot of gas. On the initial "dig" away from the light you flood the engine and dont burn off a lot and hence waste a lot on your leaving the stop signs/ lights.... idle away a bit let it catch then accelerate.... dont just jam the gas away from the stops. Like everyone is saying.... Put your right foot on a diet and you will see miracles happen with your mpg...

what about your tires and tire pressure? those could really skew your mileage. also A/C, stop and go traffic, lotta weight in the trunk or cabin, arco gas.....

its hard to admit, but i have to say the 5sfe is probably the worst engine ever made(exaggerating but it does suck muchos). it has roughly the same horespower as a civic ex or integra gs/rs. yet its like 0.6 liters bigger then the civic, and 0.4 liters bigger then the integ and it gets much much worst mpg then any of the above.

Okay, there are a couple of things to consider. First, as many others have said, is driving style. Of course, I lean pretty heavily on the gas pedal and I average 25-26 for my everyday city/highway combination in my GT. You mentioned having maintenance done. Does that include the O2 sensors that others have mentioned, but also the fuel filter? Also, tire pressure is a factor as was mentioned as well. You did not say what type of transmission you have, but I'm going to assume it's a 5-speed. Further, the type of fuel you use can make a difference. The 5sfe requires only regular unleaded (old farts like me recognize this as the oxymoron that it is) and despite what many may tell you, going to premium gas will not help and sometimes can hurt the performance of the engine if it's not specified as the fuel of choice. But the biggest thing to consider right now is that you based your fuel consumption/economy on one tank. Keep your mileage and measure your fill-ups for five tankfuls and then see what the average is. Especially with this being a car that's new to you, neither of you are used to each other; allow some time for your own personal break-in period.

x2, and dont' forget to put a fuel additive afterwards. You should see a nice increase in mpg. Also check your airbox or air filter

hey, I only get 17-19 mpg... but my car is turbo.

check your tire pressure for sure. OEM spec is 33 PSI, but for slightly better milage, you could run them a little higher like 38 PSI or so. other than that, everyone has covered everything else you need to know. if your car is mechanically in good condition it should get better milage. GT's are rated for 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Definitely dude.... you should be able to get better than what you are getting

One thing i love about my st...... stomping on it and riding her hard, i still get 400-500 mpt before having to fill up(depending on if it's all highway or if its a mix)

either there is something wrong with your car or something wrong with your foot. i drive 60 miles a day, in a GT, in Houston, and i only fill up once a week, and that also includes BS driving. last i checked i was getting over 350 miles on a tank and that was with a bad VSV, plugs, and wires. i really haven't been beating on the car. it's been mostly highway because i've taken a few trips to the houston oreily's racetrack.(haven't run it) and i set cruise for 70.
its a 1996 hatchback automatic. maintainance has been kept up. fuel filter, oil filter, oil, air filter, pcv valve, spark plugs, and wires. only thing you all seem to be listing off that i haven't change is the o2 sensor(s).

im going to try to keep it under 3k rpms, and fastest at 60mph on the highway. im just going to drive it very easy until the next fill up. i really was hoping for 25-30.
ill let you guys know how i do when i fill up next week.

So far: MpT:290..ish MpG:19.5

Thanks. Erich.

i have to agree with everyone else here - something must be up... i have a 3sge celica (2.0L, 173hp) and with the conversion to US mpg i get 25 and most of the time i'm going about 2 miles up and down the road to my place of work

i really haven't been beating on the car. it's been mostly highway because i've taken a few trips to the houston oreily's racetrack.(haven't run it) and i set cruise for 70.
its a 1996 hatchback automatic. maintainance has been kept up. fuel filter, oil filter, oil, air filter, pcv valve, spark plugs, and wires. only thing you all seem to be listing off that i haven't change is the o2 sensor(s).

im going to try to keep it under 3k rpms, and fastest at 60mph on the highway. im just going to drive it very easy until the next fill up. i really was hoping for 25-30.
ill let you guys know how i do when i fill up next week.

So far: MpT:290..ish MpG:19.5

Thanks. Erich.

your problem is the automatic transmission.

my 97 ST as an auto would get exactly the same miles per tank, usually about 280 and would never make it to 300.
after the tranny swap I drove it nice and easy and got just about 450 to that first full tank of gas, I was amazed for weeks. then I got comfortable with it and started beating on it and now I'm averaging about 350 to a tank.

Me and my buddy took a trip to California last week. When I was driving at night, the car was getting about 370 miles on half a tank of gas. I just kept the RPM a little above 2k by driving about 60mph. At 60mph with some cool weather, I can get nearly 700 miles to the tank. I never accelerate hard. The car has had a very easy life. smile.gif

well, i bought the celica with hopes of getting Much better gas mileage than my other car.

For all of you 5s-fe owners, I've done some comparisons with spark plugs. Bosch Platinum +2 plugs work great on the 5s-fe and give great gas mileage. Also, make sure you perform a coolant flush once a year. If the engine is running at optimal temperature, you will get better gas mileage. Cleaning out the throttle body twice a year also helps gas mileage by removing harmful contaminents within the TB.

there are sooo many things that will lead to poor fuel efficiency.. like a lot! but it all really comes down to how well your car is maintained and how you use it

You'd be close to alone on that opinion - I and many others have had bad experiences with bosh plugs on Toyota engines. NGK FTMFW

Yeah, most Bosch plugs on Toyotas don't work too great, in my experience.

I pulled a totally beat set of Bosch Platinum +4's out of my Corolla that were obviously way too hot of a plug for the car.....and you would think the little 4AFE wouldn't be so picky. wink.gif I also had a set of +4's on the 5SFE in the Celica long before I swapped the 3SGTE in, and it was the same deal with those. Plugs looked like they were running white hot upon inspection.

With our Toyotas, If you're going to use Bosch plugs make sure its a cooler plug with a core made from iridium or copper or the like.

I've used nothing but cooler NGK plugs ever since and to great success. smile.gif

Back on topic.....Badkarma, I would definately replace your primary O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold. Check your ignition timing as well to make sure its in spec.

You really shouldn't be getting poor gas mileage like that....I get comparable if not better gas mileage with my swap utilizing a big fuel pump, 540cc injectors, and lots of boosting!

+4 plugs are meant for larger displacement engines such as 3.8-4.0 v6's. It allows all the fuel in each cylinder to completely burn. This is why +2 was the most efficient plug for my 5sfe. My gas mileage improved greatly after switching from NGK to the bosch plantium +2.

Now on other hand, I used to have a Nissan Sentra 2.0 that would run the bosch +2's too hot, and they would turn white with no effort. It would only run good with Autolite plugs. Sometimes, an individual engine can be very picky about what you give it.

Your exhaust manifold is located where the metal cover in the center of the engine bay is. You will most likely see a hand with a cross through it that says do not touch. Most o2 sensors can be cleaned and polished back to good condition, BUT a bad o2 sensor will not really hurt your gas mileage that bad. If the o2 sensor is bad, your check engine light will come on. Also, your car will idle very rough. I suggest cleaning your MAF sensor, throttle body, and you might want to get a CAI kit that mounts to the inside of the drivers side fender. This will allow your engine to pull in a lot cooler air. Cool air = better performance = better gas mileage.

our cars don't use a MAF sensor. and while cleaning out the throttle body may be a good thing to do, it won't really affect gas milage noticably.

but what i was asking is.. where is the O2 sensor you suggest replacing located?
is it easy to get to? do i need to take anything off to reach it? how long...."should" it take.

Thanks , Erich

if you're looking at the exhaust manifold and look down into the engine bay you should see it poking out of the driver's side of it. I tried to take mine off with the manifold still in the car and couldn't. actually, once the manifold was out I still had a hell of a time getting it out! I actually bent a wrench because it was so tight... but if you've got the right tools or just a lot of muscle I'm sure you could get it out with the manifold still i the car. you might need to remove the heat sheilds though. you'll just need to unplug the electrical connector, unscrew the old sensor, screw in the new one and re-plug in the connecter... it sounds easier than it is though.

Have you replaced your distributor cap and rotor? If the contacts are burnt out, it will have a significant impact on your mileage too. Plus it's easier to get to than your o2 sensor. : )

worst point of the celica
even more than the cup holders....
my stepdads vette gets better gas milage than my car in just the sole reason it doesnt have to work as hard to get up to speed.......

I usually shift anywhere between 2,800 - 3,400 rpm and that gets me about 26 miles per gallon in mixed driving (more highway than city though).

I got 27 mpg on the last tank by shifting on average around 2,700 - 2,800 rpm... No real loss in performance.

I recently changed the spark plug wires and O2 sensor and I use a fuel injector cleaner every now and then. Oh, and I have four springs and four shocks sitting in the trunk, that might make a difference, lol.

EDIT: 29 mpg almost all highway driving.
