Howdy!

I cant seem to find an Introduction section so i'll just post it here..

My name is Ronan, im from Limerick in Ireland and i drive a '98 Celica SS-III.

'98 Toyota Celica SS-III
2.0 Yamaha BEAMS
Super Strut Suspension
Kakimoto Cat Back
Drilled and Grooved front Disks
Induction Kit
Alloy Oil Cap
17" BSA Alloys 215cm but have a set of 16" Enkei RP-F1s ordered to improve handling. 6.2kg per wheel! smile.gif
Pivot Rev Clock (might remove it, although it looks well at night)
Fog Light fitted under Rear Bumper (legal requirement)
Standard front and rear strut braces. Rear has a Black cover witch looks sweet
Red Sparco Gear Knob

Mods to follow for now:
Apexi Air intake plus some sort of cold air feed
buddy Club race Spc condensor
NGKR Platinum Plugs
Upgraded Plug Leads
TRD 1.3bar Rad Cap
Stiffer Suspension (type undecided)
Better break Pads
Stainless Decat

Car was imported from Japan in 07, Spent a year in England then i went over and brought it back. Also i removed the Blitz stickers.

I previously had a '98 Toyota Levin BZR (4AGE Blacktop 1.6 20 valve, also had Super Strut suspension) but sold it as i ran out of things to do to it biggrin.gif

i'm very jealous ronan!! welcome to the site. the ssiii is sweet so is the levin. i wish we had either in the states but we got the short end of the cool vehicle stick frown.gif
that's not the stock color is it? it looks like it's been painted at one time (emblems on the spoiler blocks aren't in the stock location) lookin good in red. as far as i know the beams ssiii only came stock in silver, black, and white (most commonly white)

welcome to the site as well wink.gif
there are a couple ways to tell. i had a link to a japanese site that listed them but the link isn't working right now for some reason. there are a couple things that would determine. motor, suspension type, etc....
surprising not all ssiii celicas have the beams. take stetsonaw for example. his is an ssiii but it only has the normal 3sge motor but it has the climate control unit, superstrut suspension, front and rear strut bars and other things. the 98-99 ssiii is the best though. that's when they introduced the beams motor.

It is the standard colour but yes it was treated to a full respray recently. Importing in ireland is very common at this stage. part of the reason for selling the levin is that they're very common now and nearly all are white.

Heres a link to another red one: http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/Toyota/Cel...S-TUNED/994422/

heres an example of the amount of levins on our roads:
Levin: http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?f...mit=Find+%3E%3E

Trueno (Same car but with different front and rear lights): http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?f...mit=Find+%3E%3E

It has A/C and E/C. Ill get it dyno'd after i decat it and fit one or two things. Im running it on 99.5 octane petrol that was released over here as its saver for the environment (but thats not why i use it wink.gif) basically regular petrol with 5% bio-ethanol that can be bought off the pump at the same price as regular. Just like the levin it would loose power on regular 95 since they're mapped for Jap 100 octane.

ha thanks and the answer to your question is... Geography biggrin.gif The best models were never sent to Ireland either, all imported privately and sometimes by garages. japanese import is a phrase very common in ireland since the eighthies. usually Toyotas and usually a sign of low mileage and great condition.

After getting lost for over a month somehere between Japan and Ireland my new wheels have finally arrived.

Enkei Rp-F1 16x7 205/50 tyres. ET 35 with 5mm spacer on the rear.

6.2kg each, heavier with the tyre but still a good bit lighter then the 17" ones i removed.
Steering response has improved leaps and bounds with the light 16" compared to the 17" wheels. Plus it frames the brakes alot better. brakes are alot more snug then they look in the picture, fill the wheel nicely.

Rough pictures but ye get the idea. What do ye think?

I thought all Celica owners were moist...?

No, I'm pretty sure it is a condition suffered by adult females travelling in a Celica. Happens to both female drivers and passengers and appears to be more severe and occur more frequently the younger they are biggrin.gif . Edit: I am reminded that in extreme cases simply being in proximity to one or more Celicas can bring on the condition.

This is absolutely true, from the female Celica owner's perspective. It's been a chronic condition for years, one that was expected to subside upon the acquisition of said Celica, only to find out the condition has actually worsened in the light of a relentless pursuit to achieve the delicate balance of artistic and mechanical perfection. biggrin.gif

Case in point. This car is just beautiful. (Although I agree w/Manphibian, I prefer the black rims.)

Welcome to the site!

But not with an oil cooler.

I know its not everyones cup of tea but they are:
Rarer,
Noticeably improve handling and steering response,
Less stress on the super strut,
Improve acceleration and braking,
Better for fuel economy when just potting around,
Bigger tyre allows more protection against Irish roads.
Plus the combination of 35 offset and wide tyres fill the arches alot better.

Im loving the whole "Time Attack look" and i think this puts the car in the right direction.

The tyres are Federal 535, i ordered 595 but was sent the lesser 535 so I'm getting a refund of the price difference. I had federals on my last car and I find them a good balance plus they stick out past the rim offering a very good amount of protection against kerbing.

The decat was the perfect length BUT the standard manifold had a bit sticking out that is ment to insert into the cat, this had to be cut off as the pipe and decat where the same diameter so one wouldnt go into the other.

Had the Celica on the dyno today in WCP.

Fitted a set of Trust GReddy spark plugs first as my NGK-Rs where a bit old. Things started off well, VVTi kicked in nicely and it climbed strongly to 5krpm but then the fuel took a dive. Seriously lean from 5k to 7k, witch is where its supposed to make most of its power. As a result it made a pitiful 167bhp at the fly.

Ive ordered a 255ltr/h fuel pump and an Apexi SAFC Neo to manage the Fuel. A bit of tuning the Neo on the dyno should see my fuel stick steadily to where it was before 5krpm returning my figure to 180-190bhp if all goes well. Witch wont be bad for a ten year old engine that is 200ps (about 190bhp) as standard and ment to be run on japanese jungle juice. Torque on the other hand was spot on. Toyota claim 158ftlbs and it made 156-158 and rising through out the revs.

YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHuuFRMF_N4

I removed the bong in the exhaust so instead of its usual rasp its a defining roar. My camera phone couldn't cope with the sound so the quality isnt great. If you look closley you'll see one guy holding his ears and the driver rolling up the window to keep the noise out biggrin.gif

Also getting the AirCon removed when i go back down to shed some much needed weight. Not much need for it in Ireland unforunatly

As i said above, It has serious fuelling issues. Its starved for fuel from 5k upwards. 255ltrh fuel pump and remap through the Apexi neo will sort it out soon and bring it back to full power.

It has the standard redline of 7k. Would prefer 8k though

Im not sure about VVTi. I know on my AE111 the VVT worked by trottle postiton, not full on at a certain rev like VTEC

Ive no graph as his printer was down but from looking at the monitor this was roughly the problem:

The fuel is fine and bordering on rich up until 5k then it takes a massive dive. Starving the car of fuel.

The Walbro 255 liter an hour fuel pump im getting fitted is good for 500bhp and it will be all controlled by this gizmo:

"
The SAFC NEO marks the newest edition to the world famous Super AFC line of piggy back fuel controllers. Building upon the powerful SAFC II, the AFC NEO has taken piggy back style fuel control to a new level. The AFC NEO boasts an incredible 16 points of user definable fuel correction. VTEC control has also been incorporated for Honda/Acura applications. A complete monitor mode is also available to keep the driver/tuner informed of critical engine data.

Features include:

- Completely new case design
- Compact design
- Incorporates both AFC and VAFC functions in one unit
- 16 point fuel correction
- Color FED display
- User defined button and background colors
- Inverted "anti-glare" screen"

Does anybody know what size BEAMS injectors are?

U may need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator with a new pump

possibly new injectors aswell, let us know if you end up maxing your standard injector duty cycle

sounds like you have a split hose in the vac hose for FPR or something

I wouldn't be driving it like like that you'd be doing some serious damage right

Too bad it won't control the VVT like it does for Vtec - that would be the sh*t. You should be able to pull at least a few HP with a better than stock tune tho right?
Why wouldn't you want to fix the actual problem rather than bandaid it tho?

I am fixing the actual problem. the problem is it isnt getting enough fuel when under haevy demand and it has been traced to the fuel pump so its being replace with one thats good for 500bhp. I should get my power back and i'll build upwards from there over time.

so is it fixed and running smooth now?

It was pulling 167bhp with the exhaust silencer out (VERY loud!!) and 145bhp with the silencer IN. It is now making 170bhp with the silencer IN which is a 25bhp increase. My exhaust is too loud to run without the silencer. I must infest in a new one.

The power delivery is MUCH better. Before it would run out of puff at 5k but now it pulls strongly all the way to the rev limiter.

Im going to get new bigger injectors and a fuel pressure regulator and see if i can claim back more of my missing power. A better exhaust and cold air intake would be worth getting too as i am sucking in alot of hot air and my exhaust is just too loud to run open and too restricted with the silencer in plus STILL too loud.

Also my SS-III spoiler was stolen frown.gif

On a scrapyard search for a spoiler i stumbled across these and got them for a bargain:

Im only using the left Recaro as my driver seat. The left one is a bit rough for my liking plus its a bit bent as the chassis twisted it and roof squashed it.

hey sorry for the spoiler. So the left passenger seat is too tall, you said it hits the roof. How much lighter are those seats than stock?

Hey Rusty, getting 169 whp from 3sge beams redtop is where it should be at.

An integra type r Jap spec gets the same wheel horspower. of course you have to remember, fwd drivetrain.

I thought you were selling your car??
