Thats because our cars (6thgen celica) looks better to "most" people here spoilerless thats all. IMO if your going spoilerless you should have a nice rear lip/splitters/extensions to go with it.

I tend to find spoilers as a great accent to our cars.

If the wing fits, so be it. But one, I think spoilerless is fine...Joe, your wing works fine on your car, but I would never put it on my own. Either wingless, maybe GT-Four, or maybe something else that's tasteful. But most "big" wings I'm not into.

Wings are great... who cares what anyone else thinks. I'm thinking about getting gt-four blocks or a TRD Wing. I think I might go spoilerless for the winter though... Snow and ice builds up and its hard to see out the back.

Don't let anyone breath on this thread wrong or it will get closed confused.gif

wings give off downforce which pushed the back of your car down at high speeds giving you more grip. but thats only with RWD and AWD. with FWD it will give u less grip at high speeds.

To each his own when it comes to wings, but i think you spoiler looks nice a little bulky for me but im not gonna dog you on it cause your car looks a 1000 times better than mine. if i would to get another spoiler besides my stock one id get either the c-one/hiro/trd style or the c-one razor style wing. Just like D-man i like his vert to and hes got a Razor wing on it.

spoiler delete......just makes the car feel different kindasad.gif FTL frown.gif

i like the spoiler the way it is, im the only one on Hawaii that has this set up in all black. taking it off and no one will know its me frown.gif

spoilers/wings tend to be looked down on because most are pointless ugly things that are non functional. like the wingr the op has serves no functional purpose. some thought out setups do provide better stability while cornering. a correctly done functional wing will go through the trunk and mount to the physical car frame. so end all 90% think its cool and u look racer with it, but serves no actual function besides looking ugly

Playr, that's not true...it serves no functionality to our cars and FWD in general. However, most others one are purely aesthetic as well, I'll agree with that.

bottom line is as long as your fwd, u dont need one, i heard they actually may slightly hurt your traction a tiny little fraction of a hair lol. but they look nice as long as there not bigger than the rest of the car. personally im a fan of the stock spoilers that flow with the shape of the back but thats just me

just because it is fwd dos not mean the car wont benefit from a correct spoiler or wing setup...you know they work more than just in straight lines. they help in cornering abilities as well. just nobody on this site has that kind of setup. although the oem gt4 spoiler is shown to be effective to a small degree

It really is all just personal preference. Lil-Joe, your wing looks good on your car, but to each his own. I would only put factory spoilers on my car, i.e. the 3 post I have now or the GT4 spoiler. Not that I think either of them will help me any at all. From how I understand it, you have to be traveling at a very high speed for a spoiler to be any use at all, like in excess of 100 mph. That's just an estimate, by the way. I did not just look that number up, that's just how it's been explained to me. But from how I understand it, a spoiler is useless unless you are hauling a**.

Somebody please correct my numbers up there!

That's not stopping me from getting a GT4 wing though biggrin.gif

I like wings, hence mine.
I dont like the celica spoilerless, and the rear bumper site too high off the ground, so spoilerless just looks wrong to me.
standard spoilers look good, but i didnt want to look like every other celica.
Certainly wouldnt change back from mine now.

if you are just spouting off at the mouth don't bother.....it just spreads false information...

you DO NOT need to be going crazy fast to be effected by a wing.

also to be noted spoilers and wings are different. A spoiler is close to the body of the car where as a wing is offset in height by a reasonable amount

So reading through these forums I see alot of people aren't too fond of wings and spoilers. My question is why? Why all the hate on them, am I missing out on something, enlighten please.

They look ridiculous, serve no purpose on 99% of the street cars that have them, add weight (and thus actually HURT performance), and did I mention they look ridiculous?

No trunk-mounted wing is actually doing anything for you other than making your car look like a child's toy.

Even Evo and STi wings are mostly unnecessary.

If you're worried that your stock car looks like a squished hamburger, maybe you should have bought a different car in the first place?

Also, to the kid who is working 3 jobs to save money for a big dumb ricer wing - save the money for something worthwhile like college or beer.

Richee, AFAIK, a spoiler and wing are differently functioning in that one pushes up and another pushes down. A wing on your car does nothing but push the tail down to increase the contact patch on the rear wheels, but since our cars are FWD it's basically useless.

i'd say the OP has a wing of sorts, albeit completely non functional except for being heavy. the GT4 i would consider a wing as well.

a spoiler is very close to the body and/or fully attached, where as a wing is up a good bit creating larger pressure zones.

Alright, I went and did some research. What I found out is playr158 is exactly right, that a spoiler is mounted lower to the car and a wing is much higher. They create downforce at 50 mph, but really become efficient at 70 mph. Without anything on the front of your car to help create downforce, a spoiler on the trunk is practically useless. Eh, I'm not gonna summarize the article, I'm just gonna give you guys the link and if you care to read it, you can. There's no need to hear me babble on.

http://www.torquecars.com/tuning/spoiler-aerodynamics.php

Keep in mind that this specific article refers more to higher performance cars than just average cars like my stock GT.

i used to love wings as a kid... but then got tired of seeing them on all whack ass cars on the streets.

many wings are affordable to most people so they buy them at autozone and stick it on their honda,

toyota, etc. along with other cheap body parts and over all an ugly car. I think because of that, wings

carry a bad stigma to them. people dont want be associated with "Rice" so they dont like wings.

Personally i think it distorts the celicas body lines which are streamlined.

Although i kinda like them on certain cars, STI, GT4, EVo... But if i bought anyone of those, i would

Remove the wing immidiately.

I notice a difference even at about 40 mph cornering with the gt4 wing, the 3 post seemed to feel
exactly the same as wingless but I noticed a distinct difference between spoilerless and the wing with
riser blocks. Same corners same speed, the rear washes out before the front wingless, and it seems
to be a toss up front vs rear with wing.

i think a lot of the problems with wings is that they dont really flow with the nayural body style and design of the car. especially with our cars bein so curvy and having such distinct lines its hard to find a nice wing that flows with the body. kinda part of why a lot of people dont like the veilside body kit.

Actually I have a spoiler. Its bolted to the to trunk and flares out as it goes higher. And even the smallest lip is functional. Im think of our car as a big paper airplane. It cut two slits in the back on slightly above the other raise the cen portion up u have a wing on ur paper airplane. Now think how air moves over under and around our cars. Dont think of the speed just the air. Now put a wing or a spoiler in the middle of the airflow. Wut happens is that airflow gets cut in half. U now have air flowing over the and under the air flowing under is trying to rise. while the air over is trying to lower. Easy way I can I can describe it is u get the same effect from a wing or spoiler as u do when u put ur hand out the window of a car and raise up and down. and magicly we have wut is know to be called down force. It really doesnt matter the speed.

I had remembered reading a thread about this a while ago.

http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=21344

There is a link to an outside website on there which ill also post below that describes functionality of the celica's distinct wing in both high and low positions from the mouth of one of TTE (toyota team europe) engineers.

It really doesnt matter the speed.

you can call it a spoiler or a wing it really doesn't matter.

and if you actaully knew how aerodynamics work...speed is a completely important factor....downforce is created by making a low pressure zone under the wing and a high pressure zone above the wing...speed of the air is a DIRECT relationship to the magnitude of this function.

so no its not magical, there is a science to creating this function wink.gif

my girlfriend says to put your hand out the window when you are sitting at a stoplight and see what happens....laugh.gif

Nice wing Joe.... Personally I like spoilers/wings whatever. I also think 6gc's look nice wingless. I plan on getting a TRD style wing for my celi. Some might call it a bit ricey, But the fact of the matter is it's my car my rules and what I like goes. It's that simple.

the problems with wings is that they dont really flow with the nayural body style and design of the car. especially with our cars bein so curvy and having such distinct lines its hard to find a nice wing that flows with the body.

i couldnt agree more... but to each his own

Lil_Joe, I like your spoiler! I haven't actually looked at pictures of your car, but from what I can see in your signature I like it. Personally, I'm trying to get my hands on a GT4 spoiler. I love how it flows with the factory lines, since after all it's a factory spoiler. So I wouldn't say that everyone here hates wings at all, just that a lot of people hate goofy ricer wings like this.

now i did see a wing almost like this one on an old body style prelude, the old square body, i have to say that it was the only one that ive seen that i liked. possibly because that body really didnt have "lines", but it looked nice.

Actually, sadly, that article I found and posted on here implied just that, that the wings with two fins like that are the most functional. Nonetheless, I'm not gonna be racing my car or anything any time soon, so I don't really need a functional wing. I just want one to look good biggrin.gif

Playr, I'm feeling some sort of resentment towards Lil_Joe's wing biggrin.gif Ha, no, I'm kidding.

I'm giving fact...your wing does 0 besides add weight. I used it as an example against other people's posting of "goofy ricer wing". Don't get all hurt cause 1 person doesn't like your ish.

I don't like that wing either, sorry Lil-Joe. But that's just my opinion. And what do you need my opinion for? It's your car, and you have the right to put on a spoiler.

I also think the standard GT4 spoiler is already very high, bit too high for me.
Most of the wings just add weight, but they can work, even on a fwd car. For example cornering at high speed (say 80km/h or 50mph and above).

And besides that, the 6th gen Celica is a good example of a sporty car which looks good withouth the spoiler.

Welcome back!

Lil_Joe, I agree with vsideboy. It's your car, do what you like with it. There's no need to get into arguments over anything. Like vsideboy said, a lot of people don't like his Veilside body kit but he likes it and that's all that matters to him. If you like your wing, keep it. Playr has a nice car, and so do you. Both of your cars are better than mine, and you guys should be appreciative of that wink.gif

Yeah, if you have the hatchback, it looks alright spoilerless, but if you have the coupe IMO, I think you should have bare minimum the stock spoiler. It just looks like wasted space.

Such haters in this thread.

Who gives a flying fudge in the end. I think its looks alright, I don't give much about the performance because...well. I'm not trying to get to work, or home in 10th of a second intervals. Its retarded to even get that heated and talk down to somebody bout a wing/spolier (<---For the haters, yes I read the thread)

You either beat the ****ty honda civic next to you, or you don't. The wing/spoiler isn't gunna make a damn.

I've had a couple people comment on my GT4 wing being huge and obnoxious but as far as I'm concerned if it came on the car from the factory I will rock it all day.

There's my non-contribution to the thread

GT4 wing was proven to improve downforce over the stock wing, resulted in a top speed of 20kph less. If I could find the link to that article again, I would link you to it.

In short, yes, it works, unlike just about every other aftermarket rice wing you can think of. Toyota designed the Supra wing to be functional, not decorative.

Isn't the whole idea of downforce only applicable to cars w/rear wheel drive though? So for the Supra, or the GT-Four, the downforce would be beneficial, but w/FWD cars, I thought downforce was pretty useless.
