After being a member of the board for years, I finally decided that my dd was on her last leg and it was time to pick up another one. So I found this little gem on craigslist...

I just took some pics of the full stable, I just need them to load up to photobucket.

Oh I forgot to mention, Abby's a little bit broke...

Thanks guys! smile.gif

Unfortunately, I bought her 'as is' so I'm basically screwed on the whole motor situation... But yea. The knock is definitely louder in person than in the vid... It's alright though, I just picked up a freshly rebuilt 5s from celicatech and I'll be dropping it in this week. biggrin.gif

I'm actually about to head down to Ohio for DSM Shootout, but when I get back I'll be posting up some more pics of the motor thats in her now, as well as the beats... smile.gif

Why not just upgrade to a 3S-GTE if the motor has to be thrown out anyway?

I'm liking the valve cover and heat shield on the old motor. You swapping those onto the new one?

Thanks guys... biggrin.gif

I will be putting my old VC and the heat shield on the new motor. I really like how they turned out, so I'm going to keep it. It beats having a plain engine bay...

I just got home from the pole barn and I think that I made some decent progress for working by myself...

I:

Removed the harness from the old motor and installed on the new one.
Replaced the throttle body.
Pulled the tranny, clutch and flywheel.
Swapped injectors (the rail is different from the 92 'vert rail)
And moved the AC compressor and PS pump to the new motor.

Overall, I think that it was a good night's work!

Motor's in! Unfortunately, I'm hung up on getting a new fuel filter. I went to every parts store in the county and no one had a fuel filter for the car.... Unbelievable!

Anyway, here are some progress pics. These were taken Friday night....

I'll get some carnage pics up tomorrow, but the rod bearing in cylinder 1 grenaded. There's shrapnel laying at the bottom of my oil pan...

Just a little closer.... smile.gif

A little more....

It was a heartache to get her where she is, but 1600 miles later, I love this car the more I drive it.... I don't know that I would've bought a 6g if I hadn't picked this one up.

Apparently, her a Vincent_Doggy went behind my back to get me a great early birthday gift! smile.gif

I really don't like being kept out of the loop, but by all means Vince.... smile.gif

I also took a pic of the engine 2000 miles after the blow smile.gif

So, I figured that I'm just going to make this my project thread....

Anyway.... Time for a little update! After making a huge mistake and remote starting Abby into my neighbor's jeep I've got almost all the parts I need to get her back into shape (I'm waiting on my headlights from a guy on alltrac.net). I'll be replacing the body panels in the spring so that nothing else happens this winter. But on top of replacement parts, i decided to spoil her a bit and pick up some JDM tails that I just couldn't pass up.

I just got back from putting them on and they look AMAZING!!!

In process....

Done!

After a little wash biggrin.gif

Huge props to Richee3 for getting me these tails! Thanks again buddy!

I got Richee3's HIDs in this week and put them in yesterday. Needless to say that I'm really pleased with the way they look.

Dan: I ended up using the 4300K bulbs b/c I couldn't get the 6000Ks to fit in the light housings properly. Thanks again though!

WOOT!WOOT smile.gif

EDIT: That knocking that you hear is my throwout bearing.... Its done that since I put the motor back in the car. I'm not too worried about it cause I'll probably end up changing out the clutch this summer.

HID's look good! Hopefully you get to use them longer than I did! I never had anybody flash their lights at me with them, and I was always worried about how the yellow fog lights looked with the white HID's, but I asked a few of my friends when I passed them and they all reported that the fog lights actually looked kinda white too, so don't worry about those. Everyone also said it was very easy to tell when it was me coming down the road because of how the lights are arranged on the car and the fact that I had the brightest lights, but not blinding. So you're all set thumbsup.gif

Alright, so I haven't updated this is a minute, but since the last time some stuff has happened....

On my way to my college graduation, the clutch went out on me.... So a clutch job in 10*F was fun....

My two babies in the same garage! (it doesn't happen often)

We pulled the motor to get to the trans since we were having issues with frozen cross member bolts. Harness unplugged from inside the car and pulled through the firewall.

Hood off, check. Though we put it on top of the car rather than on the floor for fear of our friend's Australian Shepherd.

Cherry picker, check.

I decided that 1 human power was momentarily better than a 5sfe's horsepower.

So the throwout bearing has been clicking for over a year, and we thought it finally grenaded itself. But once we got the trans apart, here is what we found.

Check out those awesome springs!

So, we come to find that the clutch disc threw a spring. The spring itself snapped into four separate pieces, which is what I'm holding in my hand. That was our problem. Surprisingly, the throwout bearing was still intact. In any case, it all got replaced.

^Soldier Field

^This is on Lower Wacker Drive. (where the chase scenes from Dark Knight and Blues Brothers were filmed smile.gif )

^I thought this was cool, it shows my 4300k lows and 3000k fogs smile.gif

The next two were taken in front of the Field Museum

Thanks guys smile.gif

But its time for a pre-dragon update.

After installing a godspeed radiator and fans, the fans pushed my alternator too far....

So, I replaced it with a 160A unit. It was relatively cheap, so if I get a year out of it, I'll be pretty happy.

After all that, it turns out that the heater core was leaking as well.... Looks like Stacy had some work to do!

I love this girl smile.gif

She got this far in just over an hour.....

Last night, we got the car all back together and flushed the cooling system.

Tomorrow, we're going to try and get the rest of my presents in...

HPS pads are nice man, I like them. Good compromise for daily driving and a little weekend fun, however that first 1 or 2 cold stops....they don't bite so hard so be prepared.

They couple well with ceramic pads in the rear with a more constant grab hot or cold, reason being you'll lock your rears up with a pad that grabs hard halfway into a stop. The HPS is... interesting. I can feel them heat up and bite down as they heat up in a stop, which is great in the front since weight transfers to the front..however with weight transferring away from the rear and the pads heating up and grabbing harder you'll get the rears locking up once you're into the stop already. If you're running around a track its no problem because the pads and rotors stay hot, even in the rear. However in a panic stop when you're just slamming on the brakes you could find that to be a problem.

Ceramic pads tend to have a constant coeff of friction hot or cold, so the rears grab the same no matter which will help to keep them from locking during a panic stop and keep you from sliding your ass around. ABS negates this problem. I know 7th gen brakes are not the same, but I can lock my rear with relative ease with the SS brake hoses even with ceramic pads (Wagner). HPS up front and Wagner rear are a good combo I think, but they're the only combo I know on my Celica...and I'll stick with them. On my old car I had Wagner ceramic up front and drum rear, so I can attest to how constant the friction is on that brands ceramic...they had the same exact grab no matter hot or cold...which feels funky as hell coming from HPS.

Honestly you may never encounter a problem, just watch out if you're cruising on the highway and make a panic stop on wet road is all.

Well we hit a problem alright.....

Things are just a little too big for the front. After putting the fronts all together, they were too tight to allow any free wheel rotation. So were going to have to figure out how to modify them just a little so that im not burning the brakes up while I'm driving....

The rears fit fine though....

Hm? too tight? Aren't they all stock replacement parts? Slides all move? pistons not seized? brake hoses not damaged? etc? Quick test, when the wheels are not turning freely open the brake bleeder. if the wheel then spins free its a bad hose holding pressure in the caliper. One side or both? MOAR INFO! laugh.gif Don't make me go up there and sort it out for you.

The pistons on the clipers completely compress however, it seems like the pads are just too thick for the allotted space. We are going to take them apart tomorrow to try to figure out the issue. I'll post up more then....

Odd...did you double check the part numbers? Did you get the inner and outer pads reversed or are they all identical? Is the pad with the squealer on the correct side (inboard or outboard?)?

And the slides are moving totally free as well? are the pads binding in the clips? Rotors flat against the hubs totally and caliper brackets totally flush to the mounting ears?

I think it might be the sliders... I'm about to head out to go check them out.

All the pads are equal thickness and I wirebrushed the hubs before putting the new rotors on and I also cleaned and greased the pad clips as well.

I'll let you know smile.gif

same thing happened to me only with the rear brakes.. the pads were way to big, and didnt allow the wheel to spin free. i drove the car slow untill it went a way but it seams like that is a problem with the 6gc... no one can make brakes for them lol.

wink.gif you guys need a real mechanic. Chris I might be up in the city this weekend near depaul, where are you? If its not too far I can swing in and take a look/assist trouble shooting. Shoot me a PM if you want my number or something.

If you do want me to swing by let me know, I'll bring some special lube with me. It's awesome for slides and stuff, 2200F temp rating, thick so it stays in place, and full of powdered anti-wear so it won't let the metal pins bind against the bores under braking load.

Well, with the help of the Georgia Ctech crew, we were able to get the 3 frozen front caliper sliders moving again.

After figuring that out and putting in my kyb's, everything went back together smoothly.

I've put 2000 miles on Abby since last Monday, driving from home to ATL to Knoxvegas, down the Dragon and back home again....

Now I need a new Throwout bearing. kindasad.gif

Were the slide boots damaged? It would be wise to just get a front slide kit and replace the slides and slide boots or even just get a pair of reman calipers. Centric makes a good rebuilt caliper.

Man I love those damn things.... I don't ever have to worry about any type of braking, panic or otherwise. I'm really glad that I went with them.

So glad in fact, that I'm probably going to wait until next summer before I put on the GT4 brakes.

So I decided to be spontaneous and pick up a set of wheels so that I could show something off at the next meet.

They're sick right? Well, they won't be on the car.... turns out, the guy swore up and down that they were 5x100/114.3 but they're definitely 5x114.3/120

So now I'm trying to get rid of these things just so that I can get my money back....

After I failed hard at putting those rims on, I checked my oil and added 1/2 quart. I filled up this afternoon and checked it again.... It didn't read on the stick frown.gif

Needless to say that i just got back in from the garage.... I replaced the dizzy O-ring b/c I could see it dripping off the distributor after I shut the car off and opened the hood. While trying to pull the old o-ring off, it broke in half (as soon as I got the screwdriver under it) and the new one went on without incident. I'm going to see driving on it for a day to see if my level stays the same, otherwise I've got a new VC gasket kit with plug rings.

I guess we'll see right?

Oh, also, If you know someone in the market for wheels they are

XXR 522 Gold
18x8.5 +30
5x114.3/ 5x120

The tires are BRAND NEW Federal ss595 215/40-18

and I'm asking the $1000 I paid for them.

Let me emphasize that everything in the package is BRAND NEW. They even have TPMS sensors. smile.gif

Not only did I find pics of this weekend's engine pull, but I also found the pics from June when I had to pull the motor to replace the clutch

AND

I found the pics from the last meet that Stacy never uploaded....

But here's the pics from this weekend smile.gif

When I got there, I had a broken crash bar

And a busted condenser

New Crash bar!!!

We decided that I would be a good time to take the carpet out so that we could put it in the sun to dry smile.gif

Its not very often the front of the car gets to look at the back...

This timing belt only has 46,xxx miles on it.... Anyone see a problem?

Thank god I ordered a new rear engine mount kindasad.gif

Draining the rest of the gear oil...

Dirty engine bay?

Clean it up with Orbitz!... ermm... Stacy and Brigette lol

Getting the interior back together...

Thanks Daniel! I LOVE these seats....

500 miles later. (Yes, I drove it 500 miles in two days)

I think we fixed it. Funny enough, we didn't even think about a difference in the seat belt from a '94 to a '96, so we ended up driving home sitting on the buckles to make it look like we were buckled in.... Stacy and I fixed it last night, because it was too weird driving around with no restraints kindasad.gif

All in all, It was a fun weekend thanks to Daniel's hospitality and generosity.

Although, I do still have to wash all the black fingerprints off her....

I'm a page behind but I just wanted to comment that Chris shows exactly why you can't count on just MILES when figuring when a timing belt is due. Like any rubber it will age and crack...60k or 5 years is the suggested interval!

So, I was driving to work this morning when I noticed something out of my peripheral...

The freaking heater core is going out again!

For the last few weeks, I've noticed that if I park the car for a short time (at a store), I've been getting a streak of fog on the passenger side of the car. I didn't think anything of it as we replaced the core April of last year and it can't be the AC due to the fact that neither of my lines out of the compressor are hooked up an my condenser looks like swiss cheese.

Sure enough, on the highway this morning I saw smoke/vapor coming out from under the glovebox. Maybe it is because I'm used to it, but when I tried to waft a bit of it for confirmation, it didn't smell like coolant....

The funny thing is, I made a comment yesterday about how good the car has been for the last 6 months or so... It's things like this that make me thankful that I bit the bullet and bought a new car. I really don't want to put the car down for repair again though, despite the ralliart- I truly enjoy driving the Celica.

She's tackled the tail of the dragon for three years running and almost every part on the car is new with the exception of the shell... One would think that with all the upgrades and maintenence, I should be good for longer than six months.

I guess I'm just tired of celebrating mediocre milestones like "6 months without having to perform major surgery".

/rant

Am I the only one who feels like this?

Yea. We replaced the heater core with a new toyota genuine unit (our wallets still hurt) and things seem to be looking alright now.

We have been focusing most of our efforts on the 88, so now that its running well, we are probably going to pull Abby off the road next summer for the overhaul.

I did find a little treat that needs immediate attention though.... You'll have to wait until I get home from work. Photobucket seems to be hating me right now.

My nemesis has returned for my Abby....

As it turns out, this is the reason why the wheel wells rust out back here. The wheel well is shingled the wrong way and when the water pools in between the 'rustproofing' and the inner wheel well, water can make its way into the rear arches.

In fact, it rained so hard last weekend on our way home from MI, that when I got home, I had to vacuum out not only the jack mount area but the whole spare tire well too....

I guess this another thing that has to get fixed next summer.

Ew.

I would suggest using a hole saw to cut the rotten area out, then have a body shop (or yourself) use a flanger to make a nice lip to put in a new circle of steel with panel epoxy and some good thick layers of epoxy paint.

Yea... I'm going to cut it out, weld a patch panel in and slather a good thick coat of POR15 all over the back of her.

Spot welding that sheet metal can make it more prone to rust as it blasts any galvanization applied at the factory, that's why I recommend panel epoxy.

Hmmmm... I'll have to check that out. I figured with POR15 all over the place, I'd be okay. But, if I don't have to weld, that just makes it better smile.gif

Panel epoxy is awesome. As strong as a weld when correctly applied (stronger in some instances since it won't make the steel brittle) and it seals up the bare metal edges as well.

3M 38315 or equivalent should work there.

Here's my thought on the repair.

From the wheel side install a long strip of steel over the area with the panel epoxy to prevent any further water intrusion (both sides). On the inside, I just noticed that you've got spot welds along there, you want weld there again since it's structural. Have a patch of sheet metal welded from the strut tower/wheel well to side panel there, be generous with the overlap and number of spot welds. As for the hole itself, cut out to clean metal and just epoxy in a plug of sheet steel or aluminum or whatever, the large steel panel welded over will take up the structural duties.
