Very good looking car, I'd rock it. A bit too GTR though but meh it looks good. The seats really ain't my taste but overall I say, finally a sports car on Yoto's behalf after so long.

i sure hope they don't put a solid rear axle in it similar to what they did in the ford mustang. Additionally if they price the car north of 25k I would probably buy a used 370z.

I like the exterior of it, but the interior makes me want to vomit. Luckily it's still a "concept" and if they do go through with this I hope they bring the interior down a lot. Maybe a nice set of Recaros or something.

I like the exterior...a little unusual, but it looks like car design is headed in this direction, so Toyota might as well be the first to do it. The interior, while new and innovative, looks like a ricer's wet dream.
I HOPE HOPE HOPE that this will be similar to an MX-5 in terms of handling. The two small seats in the rear will be a detriment...but if it can be made as tossible, as light, and as balanced...I would definitely get this car. -------------------- '97 ST \ Eibach \ KYB \ Kenwood \ Alpine \ Cusco \ OEM+ [sold 10/18]

I personally just love that Toyota is actually building its first sporty FR compact since the 80's (no... the Supra's not a compact). Also, I think it would be a mistake if Toyota marketed this as competition for the Genesis and 370Z. C'mon... it's gonna have somewhere around 150-180 hp tops out of the Subbie 2.0 boxer and I have a hard time imagining this thing any less than 2400 pounds... and who knows if America will even get that same engine (or the actual car even...). We might get the SOHC 2.5 thrown in there. If Toyota were serious about competition... throw in the STI 2.5 DOHC turbo... then you're looking at eating alive the 370Z and Genesis... but if that were the case... it's gonna be near 30K.
As far as styling goes... I really like the profile of the car. The rear is OK... not lovin' the lower half of that rear bumper... and I'm not a huge fan of the headlights... but I think the body lines on the car looks great. It's just a concept though... albeit a production concept... but a concept nonetheless. The seats are probably not gonna look like that... the interior is probably gonna be a bit more simple than that... and I don't see it rollin out of the factory on carbon-fiber inlaid 19's... But hey... it's more realistic than any "new supra"... and I'd get one for sure. This post has been edited by Kwanza26: Oct 6, 2009 - 2:52 PM -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... Too futuristic? I couldn't disagree more. It looks right on par with the current trend of imports. Interior is classic concept: extravagant & a tech overkill, but its a concept. Exterior looks fine for a production car.
I will also disagree on that horsepower expectation. Anything sub 200 will absolutely kill any hope of this car selling. It certainly looks the part of a 370z/Genesis coupe competitor - and this is an opportunity for Toyota to take that market. Even if they plopped in an old EJ20 it'd be 224hp. Although Hyundai is making great strides in quality and increasing its brand respectability, people are still going to think twice about plopping down 35k on a V6 Genesis coupe. It's already in Gran Turismo: http://jalopnik.com/5375363/video-toyota-f...in-gran-turismo -------------------- |

But that's assuming they're gonna go turbo. Speculations so far... and considering Toyota is emphasizing on weight reduction... I don't see them going turbo. I would not be surprised to see it with the n/a 2.5 in the US and n/a 2.0 elsewhere. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I'm an artist!"

Granted, it would have to be turbo. But I still say if it's less than 200hp (IMO 225 is the magic number) it won't sell. Toyota will want 25k for a sub 200hp car because it's a sporty Toyota - and nobody will buy it, and they'll say 'oh see nobody wants sports cars so we're not going to sell them'.
I can see this doing well if it has a starting price around 19k, and has 200hp low end model, and a turbo 2.5 with ~275 for 25k. I think it'd be perfect if there was a 225 n/a model and 300hp turbo model, but we all know that's in fantasy land. I have no idea what that c-45 boxer engine is underneath the hood in that Gran Tourismo video.
What is this going to compete against? Civic, Tibberon, Focus, Cobalt or 370Z, Genesis, Camaro, Mustang My guess based on the physical size and price point mentioned in the OP is that it will be the Civic/Tibberon. That will basicly make it an 8th gen Celica. It'll be nowhere near the 370Z/Genesis crowd unless you can squeeze close to 300 hp out of it. And I doubt that it will be intended for that. -------------------- '99 Celica GT - Sold

I think 225 for 25k sounds fantastic. But like I mentioned, it's more the handling I'm worried about...they have potential to make it a fantastic chassis with that FR setup, especially if they do something like an FMR. -------------------- '97 ST \ Eibach \ KYB \ Kenwood \ Alpine \ Cusco \ OEM+ [sold 10/18]

I'm just glad Toyota is making this. And everything seems promising. They also mentioned its going to be around $21k USD which is pretty cheap. The looks have to grow on me but I think if they tweek it a bit more it'll look good.
Right now the Genesis is the only new car I would consider buying and this looks like a straight competitor with that, and with Toyota/Subaru behind it, I think it'll be alot better. And there is no way they would only give it 200hp. Even the CIVIC SI has that much today. I think we'll get alot more than that. |

You know.. before all we heard were rumors and all we saw were renderings by various magazines and somehow 2011 was not that bad of a date to release this puppy. Now that there actually IS a working concept I would have to say that I am quite disappointed because late 2011 seems ohh so far away... almost 2 years as if we have that much patience. I would be a lot more comfortable if this went for sale in early summer or late spring of 2010.

Exterior Dimensions of 164 in. long, 69 in. wide and 50 in. in height, with a 101-in. wheelbase. Vs a 6gc liftback 174.2 in. long, 68.9 in. wide and 50.8 in. in height, with a 99.9-in. wheelbase. woww,,,
love the design, however the front needs a little more,,, more,, agressive in my opinion,, or at least on the sides,, the sides are missing something,, the front reminds me of those ugly new mazdas... dont you guys think? but i love that rear design though. whats with the boxer engine? cons pros or something... tried to look up info but could not find that much. if it is in the range $25000, $30000 i would buy it if they change the interior which i dont think its going to stay like that. specially the seats. i think that would be a reasonable price if they rated at 260+HP.. but we'll have to wait. About turbo,,, uhm,,, i really hope it comes with one,, but its america, economy sucks, gas price high,, i think they would have to tweek the engine a lot if they want to add turbo to it. at least in america. but i have my hopes high for this to happen well thats my 2 cents,, (it was more like a dollar  -------------------- ![]() |

hmmm the na 2.0L ej20 with dohc makes 190hp. With this new toyota head I'm guessing it should make a bit over 200. Remember thats over 100 hp/l on a na engine, which is impressive. Yes this sounds similar to beams but will be lighter due to an aluminum block and hopefully will have some more torque.

According to previous reports this was supposed to be geared to 50 year old clientele . With styling like this... I don't know. I just want to see a all wheel drive gt-4 version like promised but I can not wait 2+ years for it. For time being I am researching evo 9's and evo10's with prospect of buying one sometime in spring or summer.

I don't see how on earth this is geared towards 50 year old clientele - that report sounds bogus. -------------------- |

Everyone keeps complaining about the interior of this car.. This car will be on display at the Tokyo Auto Show. They kinda have to do something outrageous with it. I have no doubts that the interior will bear little semblance to this when the production model comes out. I'm guessing that the car will be aimed at the Civic Si as it's main competitor, although I think there should be a base model aimed at the Si and an upscale AWD turbo model aimed at the 6 cylinder Camaros. In my honest opinion, the FT-86 looks worlds better than the new Camaros do. But regardless of whether the price is at 20k like it's supposed to be or if it reaches 30k, I'd still like to have one. Also, just a guess, but if they are 20k, then I think we'll see them all over the place, like the Scion tC. And I hope to God this car can maintain a little dignity, and not be seen 500 times a day like the tC.

Anyone else catching a Cadillac vibe looking at the front of it?
And a Subaru boxer engine? Comon... how about letting Yamaha put something together for it? But, if it means Toyota will finally release something interesting, I won't argue too much. -Doc -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |

i don't know about you guys but i am hoping that this will come at a fairly high price tag. why? because for the same reason that richee3 stated. i don't want this to be a car that i'll see everyday. i want it to be one of those cars that i'll notice from miles away and yell "look at ft-86!!" the same way i do for 6th gens.. but i'm sure Toyota is more inclined to sales and trying to make it affordable for the younger target market. if this does well, maybe cars like the LF-A will be put to production..

That way it's cheaper for me when I go to buy one. Who cares if there are about a bazillion of them on the roads, that just means that there's more replacable parts available and quite possibly larger aftermarket support. I would love to see this car with a Toyota emblem release in US, but I think it'll be a Scion, and I'll have to buy toyota emblems from Japan for it lol. -------------------- ![]() |

I'd like to see an interior like the last supra, wrapping the driver with the consoles, and with all the consoles angled towards the driver.
I also hope they'll eventually do a more agressive looking version with a drop top (aka tin top or twin top) and 4-wheel drive. This post has been edited by BloodyStupidDavey: Oct 13, 2009 - 3:33 PM -------------------- Davey

THey would be really stupid if they put a really low tag price on it.. hope it doesnt happens QUOTE who says they'll release it under toyota tag? It almost certainly will be released under the Toyota marque not Scion or Lexus as that was the intention from the start. And the low HP is partly to get good numbers for emmissions and mileage figures. They are talking around 180hp, 35mpg and a $22k pricemark. 35mpg and $22k are both pretty good for a sports compact. A low price tag for the entry model could still allow room for a convertible or GT4 version at around the $35k price mark, which I would like very much. And as for the engine - the original deal was that Subaru would make the chassis and transmission, with Toyota providing the auxillary systems (most notably the brakes) and initial styling. The engine is a joint venture between the two companies and is a D-4S (not C-45 as reported elsewhere). It is expected that the Subaru version of the car won't be significantly different in body panels to the Toyota version (kinda like Curren vs Celica) - expect different head and tail lights and a different hood. Part of the reason for this is to ensure that a healthy 3rd party customisations and modifications market develops for the car. The cabin design will probably be fairly different between the two versions, however. It may be that Subaru even have a clause in the joint agreement that says that any future variants also have to use the Subaru transmission. More on the D-4S engine: http://paultan.org/2009/10/09/toyota-ft-86...s-boxer-engine/ This post has been edited by BloodyStupidDavey: Oct 13, 2009 - 4:14 PM -------------------- Davey

Dont get ahead of yourself kids. Lets wait for Japanese Auto Salon and figure out what Toyota and Subaru want to do with all of this. I have a lingering suspicion on the back of my mind that toyota will try to hybrid-ify most of their future models. They seem to be very successful with their prius program and similar type engines are not being squeezed into camry's and other models. If I am not mistaken, Tokyo thing is to last from October 24th ish to November 3rd I think. AND Subaru as recently pulled out of WRC so their racing heritage may put their version of ft-86 into similar category as some sort of cross-over vehicles with awd and enough horse power to get you buy. Never know.
Fingers crossed for the best. -------------------- Captain Pessimist

The mule isn't what the car will look like... it's a testing vehicle usually made up of the prototype parts in a current model car.

You better believe it. I can't wait to see more pics of this thing, plus get several more reviews from the press on it. Hopefully more information will be released, like if they have officially decided on if there will be an AWD version available, etc. I'm probably being too hopeful, but I can dream, can't I? Late 2011 is entirely too far away.

I like the looks. I am against the idea of a boxer engine in a toyota, no matter how great a powerplant it just doesn't seem right. yes i totally agree with you and Dr Tweak. I mean its just not the same. They are doing a half assed job on the engine. was the 2jz-te head designed by yahama?? I mean didnt the gt-four beat the wrx back in the day?? yes we all know that boxer engines are great motors, but i heard from a friend of mine that has a wrx, that they are hard motors to work on.... sigh.... ![]() -------------------- Group buy to replicate Narrow E series transaxle parts

Some into on subaru version
http://www.7tune.com/subaru-086a-sti/ Something tells me that I am doing myself some good by purchasing an evo this upcoming year. Subaru is supposed to debut on 2011 or 2012 auto show and be available for sale sometime after that. I have been quite busy researching evo 8,9,10 models and subaru wrx sti coupe models from 2003-2007 and for time being that seems to be the only semi affordable AWD lineup ;-( My family is supportive though. THey have pretty much condemned my celica adventures through the years but prospect of new car is music to my mom's ears. Every time they come visit me they have to rent a car cause you can't fit 4 traveling people and luggage into a coupe. So. having a 4 door sedan and slightly bigger trunk space should do just fine he he he. -------------------- Captain Pessimist

Coming back to this, there is actually very little to dislike.
In addition to my previous comments, I think it feels a bit too squat, too short. Looking at the stats, it is 6" shorter than the 7th gen and over 12" shorter than the 6th gen. The shots of the back seat look nice. The front seats are a little cutting-edge but if the seat hinge could be toned down a little, they could work in a production car. Reminds me a bit of the seats in the Tesla. I'm not overly keen about the instrument cluster with its wings. I could live with it I suppose. The dashboard is the only thing I really dislike and I'm sure that is just for the show circuit. As previously mentioned, I'd like to see something that reminds one of the MKIV Supra cockpit - the way it seperated the driver from the passengers. -------------------- Davey

i, too, prefer the cockpit-like styling in the supra and 6gc but because of lightweight being one of the most important factors, i don't think toyota would even consider it. toyota even got rid of carpeting and put solid panels. what i'm more concerned about are the white seats, armrest, & door panels.. it's gonna be a pain to keep clean. and some things i still can't quite figure out are what the 3 USB ports in the centre are for other than for playing MP3's. does the stereo come with a display? it should if it's going to play DVD's (as it's printed on the dash). and what are the wings on the centre console for? isn't that CF piece just below the shift knob going to be in the way?

Super... what I meant to say is that I live in Florida and my Family leaves in New Jersey. My sisters who are now growing up age 8 and 10 +my mom can no longer fit into my celica. We used to do it that way when they were smaller with my step father sitting in passenger seat but that was always for a short ride somewhere. Then they started traveling with like half their possessions and my little celi can no longer accomodate them. Heck I can't even pick them up in an airport.. they won't fit. So we have been renting SUV's for the last few years. Needless to say when we are all going to the keys for 1-2 weeks car rental turns into a thousand dollars. Pretty silly considering that they come here several times a year. So logically it would be nice to have a big(er) car. My eyes are set on evo but my heart longs for my celica. Such is the sad truth of my relationship with my sporty coupe. Engine goes vroom vroom, car puts a smile on my face but from practical standpoint I do need to get a car that is capable of serving as a travel car. I can go cheaper, of course but having some vroom behind the hood does not hurt either. Now I could wait for the FT-86 but in all seriousness waiting for it means putting a lot of trust into a car that has been canceled half of dozen times, postponed and reduced to a fraction of what it was supposed to be. Yeah it does look nice but more powerful version will be released sometime between 2012 and who knows when. 2+ years is actually quite a lot of time to wait for a promise that may never come.
I first got a celi in 98 and it has been a wonderful journey so far. I just hope that choices that I do make will give me as much joy as I had owning celicas he he he. -------------------- Captain Pessimist

visit 7tune website. They have some updates on subaru version of this car. http://www.7tune.com/confirmed-bigger-badder-subaru-216a/ I'm not sure that I totally believe the 7tune's sizes. It seems pretty unlikey to me that the Subaru 216A will have a longer wheelbase that the FT86 given that the whole purpose of the project was to standardise on the chassis and drivetrain components as much as possible so as to keep costs down. Interestingly, the inside of the Subaru is depicted as the same as the ft-86. I question if this even came from Subaru or if some home enthusiast did their own artists impression. ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by BloodyStupidDavey: Nov 10, 2009 - 5:26 AM -------------------- Davey

If I was to purchase either of these babies it would be a subaru version. For obvious reasons it would cost 30-35 grand because essentially it would be a 2 door subaru sti. BUT.... it is to debut in Japan in 2011 meaning that it may or may not ever make it to us market in subaru form. If it ever does it will be in 2012 at the least and probably tuned down so much that its "green" will be flowing at half the horse power or with less than half of features.
On the other hand an sti or evo are available now, cheaper and with 4 doors. Gt-4 is certainly an option. Just because I say I will be purchasing evo... does not give it a 100 percent guarantee. Also while gt-4 would be cheaper to my pocket, it would be as illegal as driving backwards on a highway. But evo.. on the other hand... ohh so available -------------------- Captain Pessimist

![]() ![]() Almost looks like the Toyota bumper (looking at the lower vents) is like our preface whereas the Subie bumper is like our facelift. This post has been edited by SwissFerdi: Nov 10, 2009 - 11:14 AM -------------------- '97 ST \ Eibach \ KYB \ Kenwood \ Alpine \ Cusco \ OEM+ [sold 10/18]

I like
![]() I don't really know what they are going for with the whole "G Sports" thing. Sounds to me like a variation of TRD... which has been around for a long time and is already established. But whatever, as long as they actually make this car. But whatever, as long as they actually make this car. I think for Toyota it's much like the F-Series Lexus' they're making; the IS-F and rumored GS-F. I think with Toyoda's goal to bring new excitement to Toyota automotive I think a new Sports division makes sense; Toyota of old is changing and TRD of old is changing with it. Also, Gazoo is now Toyota's automotive racing division in Japan so I think they have what it takes to pull this off. -------------------- Has no more Celicas

The idea of there being a new incarnation of the Celica isn't a new idea, that rumor's been around for a few years now. i don't think it's gonna happen, at this point it would be taking 2 steps backwards; that's why Scion came into play, to take over the demographic the Celica was marketed towards
