Followed Engadget's LiveBlog of the keynote and so far I'll say that I'm not that impressed.

The following things are very nice:

720p recording @ 30fps
IPS panel on a phone

Other than that though and I'm still waiting for HTC's new Windows Phone 7 devices.

It's nice but I'm not all that shocked since this was all leaked weeks ago with the whole gizmondo thing.

But I'm getting it day one. App store/iphone OS/user mods are still untouched by any other phone. You guys in the US will get it earlier a few weeks since its not coming here till July.

those look like 3d rendered images.. not the actual product.
i'm not a fan of the design. the previous design was better.
i've been contemplating what to get for my next phone, but surely it won't be this.

I love Apple. Don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of Mac. I have two. But the iPhone just seems like a gimmick to me. I'll never have one.

Nothing to make me want to get rid of my 3GS for. Not that impressed really. I think it needed more to keep up with the android army tbh.

Much prefer the smooth, flat shape of the 3GS, this will feel much bulkier in your pocket.

True is I'm not iPhone fan... probably just because I do not like restrictions with iPhone related. I'm NOKIA guy for many years. Now using N97. IMHO damn good option if you want small cellphone with large touch screen for more than just making few calls smile.gif.

I have the HTC HD2, the Australian version not the T-Mobile one, on at&t and it's WinMo 6.5. Last week though, Engadget Mobile leaked the upcoming device names for the Windows Phone 7 devices HTC will be launching.

I don't think there was one for T-Mobile listed.

I currently own a 3g, so I will get the iphone 4 because it will be compatible with all my current stuff ( calendar, music, 3rd party apps ) but in all honestly apple needs to step up the game, by a lot, Droid phones are catching up QUICK, I think droid phones have everything needed to be better, they just need better marketing and a bigger share of the pie for the developers to motivate them to develop more apps.

everything the iphone 4 does are ideas that came from jailbroken phones, multitasking ? backgrounder, video calling / Knocking live video, the folder for apps ? really ? I had that on my 2g, the only thing is really bringing new is a better display and the front / back camera. every other feature has been available on cydia. they are trying to advertise the ability to change the background, something that needed to be standard since the very first iphone, also available on Cydia.

and eventhough knocking live video is video ONLY, no sound, is available everywhere you go, unlike video calling which is available only on wifi.

almost forgot, yes it does have a 5.0 camera and HD quality video, but which smart phone doesn't have that nowadays ?

its the fact that Apple took the time to make sure that all these features work as they are supposed to, they don't kill battery, or crash when u use them. my 3GS was JB'd before and those apps and abilities (on cydia) made the phone painfully slow and made my phone crash constantly.

i welcome the stability of iOS 4 and the new features. including the best display on a phone and extremely fast/efficient processor and the rest of the hardware they put into the phone.

If I had a 3GS I'd be hard-pressed to upgrade, but I have a 3G and it's passed its prime. I will probably upgrade to this. My coworker has the HTC Evo, which is large, but a very cool phone. If I wanted to switch to Sprint I'd probably get that, or the Incredible on Verizon.

This phone looks prettier than the previous 3G(S) in my opinion.

The problem I'm seeing with Android is that manufacturers are skinning them how they want, and not all phones get the Android upgrade. Froyo isn't even on the Evo which is very disappointing. But I whole-heartedly agree the Android is gaining momentum. I think if the next iPhone isn't a BIG step up, Android might be eclipsing them this time next year.

Im glad you brought up the Incredible cause I cant live without my Incredible, I had the iphone and liked it but even the new iphone has nothing on the Incredible. My 3g speeds are so fast and the 1gig processor is just unreal. Now before you say anything I have both an ipad and an imac and I like them more then pc but the iphone relied on a home computer if you did alot with it, with the Incredible I dont have to worry about it being a windows(google) based phone.

As for the iphone 4 all I see that is new is HD shooting, vid con.(which is nice), and multi tasking, that isnt an OMG moment for me. Apple thinks that there the best and no one can compete with them at this point but google and microsoft are doing a good job.

Alright so I've had this phone for about 2 hours. so far I think it's awesome. It's a great upgrade from a 3G. All the little things the 3GS had, like compass and the faster speed, I've been doing with out.

First thing you notice is the screen. It's really quite nice. Biggest impact you can see is with text. It's crystal clear. GIGANTIC improvement.

The speed of the OS. Compared to the 3G this thing is lightning fast. 512mb of RAM helps.

The camera - BIG improvement. I had a 2.0mp and it was crap. 5.0 with autofocusing (touch screen where you want to focus) is great.

So far this thing is great.

A lot of people have reported the reception is poor, but i'm guessing you have a pretty strong signal in your part of the world?

Yeah there is a thread on Gizmodo where holding the phone in the lower left hand corner dramatically decreases signal, even going from 5 bars to losing service completely. I am not experiencing this problem at all, it's staying full signal.

My 2nd upgrade in 10 yrs was from Nokia to the 3G iPhone last year. Yup, behind the dark ages here!!... wink.gif
We don't have 3G signal here, but @ work & 20 miles in any direction, there is 3G.

With the 1st 2 Nokias, I had VERY few dropped calls---this iPhone drops calls passing by those windmill turbines,
or driving thru down town. We don't have any buildings higher than 3 floors!!!

Going on-line is nice, but it seems to be getting slower, even in 3G with full signal!!
Pics are pretty much true-life colors! Games are decent.

I know 3G is outdated already, but I can't see upgrading to a " better " device if we can't even have old tech keep up with progress!!... frown.gif

I don't really like it. My coworker got his in the mail today. The screen is the best part of the entire phone. The whole iphone os is very dumbed down. They're just now trying to include things that android did out of the box almost two years ago.

And there are already problems pouring in about the yellowing, the signal dropping (which I was easily able to replicate due to being left handed), the scratches in this "super durable" gorilla glass, etc.

Apple, the masters of engineered obsoleteness. Design a super expensive product, make everyone think they need it, then make it completely obsolete by the new and cool product in a year or less.

I just can't believe the people that buy all that stuff and think they have to have every little new piece of equipment Apple makes. I have a few friends that have almost every generation of Ipods, Iphones, Macbook Pro's, etc. They just look at the old models like it's a piece of trash, whether it works or not.

Can't blame Apple for catering to people who NEED to update every year. I have a 5th gen iPod, I've had it for 4 yrs, haven't upgraded. I had a 3G (for sale wink.gif), skipped the 3GS upgrade, and got this one. So you can't really get mad at a company when supply is a result of demand. Be mad at people.

I'm just wondering what was yellowing ? Mine works just fine the screen is amazing. In my opinion once you have a iPhone you can't have any other phone. Atleast I can't. There really isn't much sufferer with the iPhone 4, the screen is amazing and there's a camera on the front, and it's faster in texts and app store no more lag. That's the only thing I can see that's new.

how does the evo beat the iPhone 4?
screen size?
cause i love carrying a retardedly big phone that people accidentally push buttons all the time. rolleyes.gif
also the resolution on the iPhone 4 is better than the Evo. The Retina Display is bar none the best screen out for a phone.

camera?
so you have 8MP compared to 5MP, but the quality of pictures from an Evo suck when put up next to a picture from an iPhone 4.
http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/25/iphone...ties-evaluated/
there ya go. only things that beat the iPhone 4 at taking pictures are you guessed it, actual cameras.

4G data?
wow hope ya live in one of the 14 cities that have OKish service, otherwise your are on 3G.

Multitasking?
sure Android did it first, iOS does it right wink.gif
(granted the 3rd party apps need to update to handle this for the most part)

Apps?

App store: 200,000+
Android market place: 50,000
you decide who has a better choice

Video:
please see the link above. (evo comes in last for video)

so how do you figure its better?

I think most people who say the HTC or the droid are better than the iPhone have never owned a iPhone, the iPhone is a must have it does everything those phones do time 10. Like he said above the app store is incredible, and the camera is flawless. Once you've had an iPhone there is no going back to any other phone. And if you want free apps just jailbreak the phone and install installous and wallah you have any app you want for free. The iPhone is the best phone out nothing will ever beat it. If verizon picks up the iphone I'm willing to bet NO ONE will be buying the droid anymore.

The Apple OS for the iPhone/iPod is never as intelligent as the Android and such.

I actually lined up last Friday and got one myself. The phone is an absolute beauty. As for the OS, since I'm an iPod Touch user for years, it's pretty much the same **** other than you can now actually call people, and get online without having to checking if there's wifi.

But so far I'm loving it for what it can do. And for the stuff that it can't do, I actually don't need them anyway.

I would love to own the iPhone 4, but I'm not eligible for an upgrade until July of next year and so I'm just gonna wait till the iPhone 5 comes out next June. I heard it'll have an 8MP camera and if the 4's 5MP already beats the Evo's 8MP, imagine what the 5's 8MP will look like laugh.gif
Besides, I have a 3GS and with the new OS4 upgrade, I'm loving it even more, it'll keep me entertained for another year

Yea you're a year locked in. Can't upgrade till you past that 6 months left point.

3GS + iOS4 upgrade is pretty much iPhone 4. No one uses the front camera anyway... I don't want people to look at me ****ting while i'm talking to them on the phone.

Except for the faster processor, double the RAM, 5mp camera, "retina" display (which is a huge improvement), and better battery life.

So far this thing is great.
im on your old boat. have a 3g running ios4 (runs slow at times). if i had the 3gs the decision to upgrade would be tougher. the only thing holding me back is ive been on tmo for over 5 years and have no complaints about their service or rates. i pay 75-80 with tax for unlimited minutes, messages, data. at&t seems so expensive to me. im having trouble justifying an extra 40 or so a month for 3g internet and limited minutes/messaging. im almost always on wi-fi anyway.

i would love the iphone 4 though. i might just end up getting a factory unlocked iphone 4 and sticking with tmo for a while longer. glad to hear you say its a big improvement overall.

i too got one of the first ones off the boat. it came in on the 23rd. got it covered with invisible shield and an apple bumper. waiting for switcheasy to mail me my case. also got a full cover from decalgirl.com.

so far im loving it. sold my 3gs on ebay for $400 and dont miss it. the extra battery life is a selling point all by itself. the new display makes me cringe when i look at the 3gs (or older) displays and even when im looking at my ipad.

if you guys arent members of www.everythingicafe.com yet, go join. TONS of information and resources.

jokerkid, do you need unlimited minutes? im paying $69 bucks on at&t for 450 rollover (i have like over 4,000 unused minutes), 1500 text, unlimited n/w and mobile to mobile, and the iphone data plan.

i talk A LOT lol. i might be able to hold back and let it roll over. i have to sit down one of these days and see how many minutes i've actually been using. as far as text goes, i definitely need more than 1500 (i think after that the only option is unlimited). which data plan did you go with? i know i use over 200mb but not more than 2gb - but i have to see how much of that is on EDGE and what's wifi. i know i'll spend more time online with the 3g whenever im away somewhere (part of the reason i dont use much edge is because the lack of speed is frustrating). so maybe i dont need everything unlimited but its nice not being tied into a contract or having to worry about minutes/text/data.

damn forkee, that phone is bulletproof! i might just get the screen protector and a bumper. i saw a video showing how easy it is to remove and replace the back cover. it's cake. looks like a lot less hassle than the older phones.

how much do you think i could get for my 16g white 3g? it's running ios4 with a software unlock.. not sure if that adds much value since any 3g can be unlocked now. i'm sure i could find some info on icafe or elsewhere. just being lazy.

you could probably get around 250 for your 3g, as long as its in working condition. maybe even 300 if you jailbreak the sucker and put some quality apps on there to sweeten the deal.

theres tons of texting apps where you can text for free, so that shouldnt be an issue. i might even just do that and get rid of my texting plan (itll bring my monthly bill to $60!!) my data plan is unlimited. i got it before they switched to the tiered pricing. its great because i can tether it out to my ipad and use it for internet. =)

thanks for the info. i have to look into those text apps. im sure there are some drawbacks to them compared to real-time texting.

recently, i've been concerned over the antenna issue. i've heard a few friends say they don't experience the problem, but most do. consumer reports isn't recommending it until they fix the "design" flaw. there's also a class action suit against at&t and apple over their exclusivity contract. i'm just going to sit tight for a while and see what they do, if anything.

The antenna is SO AGGRAVATING ! One second I'll have 5 bars with my right hand if I switch hands to shift, or anything it drops my call because I have no bars. Also I keep expierenceing problems with it saying call failed while I'm talking. I'm thinking of selling it on eBay and going back o the 3Gs I have.

Don't do it! Apple is coming out with an update in a week or two to fix that specific problem. Turns out that ever since the first iPhone, they've been using the wrong formula to calculate how many bars we actually have. The phone could show 5 bars but really, we might only have 2 or 3. Hang in there.

I'll hold it out for a while but it's really getting annoying with the dropped calls and calls failing. I wanted to throw this thing across the room today. On hold for 40minutes, finally get a hold of a agent and it drops
My call and says call failed I was so mad. Words don't explain.

The update won't fix the problem.

Which doesn't affect anything but the display. You can now see how few bars you actually have.

Yeah, apparently they're going to make the bars look bigger too. It's bs. It won't fix the problem. It'll just make it look like it's at&ts problem and they'll tell customers they're in an area without signal. From what I've read there's also an issue with some screens having a yellow hue and a problem with the proximity sensor.

^ Agreed.

Read the last half of this page and you'll know why I think the iPhone is an overpriced and unnecessary commodity. Handy, but not for me.

Welli love my iPhone, I talk on the phone about a hour a month. I send thousands of text a month literally and I'm on the Internet 500K a month too. This i4 tho is a POS. If anyone was to upgrade I would say just get the 3GS, something just no front camera.

Looks nice, works like crap.

I have at&t and the coverage in NC is superb so I'll probably never go to Verizon but the continuous issues Apple's having with these phones makes me even more comfortable with seeing the iPhone as a trend and nothing more.

Why is anybody saying that it's an expensive phone? It's the same price as the other smart phones. HTC Incredible is $600 without a contract, $200 with, same as the iPhone.

The iPhone isn't a "trend" either, it pretty much setup what every phone manufacturer is now copying. I'm no fanboy, but facts are facts. That being said, I may sell this thing when the unlock comes out and get money to get out of this contract and switch to Verizon and get the Incredible. The Android OS is still in its infancy and not nearly as polished as iOS but it seems on a faster track of development.

The antenna problem I can reproduce at home, but not here at work. It has something to do with signal strength, even if both places I have full bars.

Good luck with that. I won't be touching anything Motorola touches. From the review I just read sounds like they really mucked-up Android.

Oh and you can't run custom Android on it because of the eFuse chip that's installed on the phone, it'll self-destruct. I sh!t you not, the phone will cease to operate. Motorola say sit won't brick the phone, but it won't load. Still can't do it, but it won't destroy anything. Kinda the exact opposite of what Android is supposed to be - open.

im very interested to see what apples response to the antenna issue is gonna be. i doubt "holding it different" is gonna fly for much longer....

... then again it may very well..... it seems no one buys cell phones for actually using the phone anymore.

It won't. There's an Apple press conference tomorrow regarding the phone. NY Senator Chuck Schumer has written a letter to Steve Jobs regarding the reception problems. This isn't going to go away.

I'm just going to wait and get the dell streak... Because very little of what I do on my phone is make calls.

And steve ought to be kicking himself because the designers and engineers told him this was going to happen way before it was released.

I loaded 4.0.1 last night. The bars are indeed bigger, which I like. But now with the more accurate reception formula, I'm getting 3-4 bars at home where I used to have 5, and 4-5 bars at work where I used to have solid 5. I guess this doesn't mean I have any less service, but that I never had true 5-bar quality service to begin with in either location.

No recall. Basically they showed that the statistics for drop calls and complains doesn't warrant a recall and they are giving out free cases starting next week until Sept. 30th.

Note: Free case doesn't mean BUMPER.

My question... well more of a concern...

Since the day people invented a phone and then a cell phone and then a small cell phone.. .and then pda and then integrated pda into the cellphone and then integrated a video camera, an ipod, a photo camera, computing capacity and more... there has not really been a "need" to have any of it in one little package.. because realistically speaking...think about it.. they are out to get you guys and make you spend more money without even realizing it.

Lets start with the basics.

A pda costs somewhere in vicinity of 35 dollars but you dont "HAVE TO HAVE IT" because a good old notebook only costs 3.99 at walmart and does the job.. exactly the same job quite nicely. It did for 100+ years and does not depend on batteries.

A phone with pda capabilities usually costs 50-250 dollars more than a simple phone that just makes calls.

A digital video camera capable of taking high def videos costs not more than 200 bucks.

A phone with video capabilities usually costs 100 dollars more than a simple phone that just makes calls.

An ipod costs 30 dollars.. and frankly you DONT HAVE TO have a 250gb ipod. My 4gb nano that I bought way back when does the job nicely and when I am done listening to 1000 songs it can hold it takes me 4 minutes to replace entire contents of my ipod with new 1000 songs.

A phone with mp3 capabilities usually costs 100 dollars more than a simple phone that just makes calls.

A picture camera costs 100 bucks and takes like 10mp photos.
A phone with same capabilities usually costs 100 dollars more than a simple phone that just makes calls.

A computer.. well a really really really good laptop costs 1000 bucks and can play dvds, blu rays, has web cam, 250gb hard drive and every single thing that comes with it...

And yet people feel that its better to spend 400 bucks on a thing that can do less things, but is more mobile and then be tricked into signing up for data plans, texting plans, internet plans, more minute plans at astronomical costs.

My neighbor's phone bill is 120 bucks.. yes iphone replaced his laptop because he can check email on the go and yes iphone gave him capacity to permanently shelve his video camera and his photo camera and while all that is fine and dandy.. he.. like millions of people with iphones have developed a tick.. an obsession... an addiction to iphone. He checks it quite literally every minute and handles that phone rotating it between his sweaty palms.. and he has all kinds of gadgets for it.. like some goggles that allow him to watch movies and a thing to listen to music... wirelessly and I think he already spent like a thousand dollars on it.. easy.

The question is why? Are we so socially incapable of picking up a regular phone and without texting a wall of text every second call our friends or acquaintances and ask legitimate questions, hold intelligent conversations... or perhaps even meet those people face to face?!

I am all for technology.. after all I am a computer geek but everything is fine in moderation.. even the cellphones.

I'm just going to wait and get the dell streak... Because very little of what I do on my phone is make calls.

And steve ought to be kicking himself because the designers and engineers told him this was going to happen way before it was released.

Looks enormous:

A little off topic but I like how its a dell phone and in the background they hav a mac.

edit: The 80's called they want there phone back...

Funny guy. You got jokes. rolleyes.gif

Only slightly larger than the EVO 4G

So when did this

equal this

plus I get uber dell discounts and AT&T service discounts.

You're going to have a tough time selling cases when Apple just said they're giving away some for free.

And dude, that's not slightly larger, that's considerably larger than an already huge phone. That's more like a tablet than a phone. Wasn't a joke... that's ludicrous.

im not selling them, just trying to get a better deal from a local store by buying them in bigger quantity and then redistributing them. just letting you all know of a good deal..... anyways, who knows how the free cases situation will turn out (that's like 2 weeks down the road). notice that all the apple stores have depleted their once adundant supply of bumpers, including taking it off of apple.com.

you could go through ebay and risk it for an overseas case thatll take weeks just to arrive with no idea of the quality

or rely on a fellow 6gc member that know's his stuff when it comes to iPhones and especially cases wink.gif

anyways....yea those other phones are whack with the huge screen. even though the iPhone 4 screen is smaller, it still manages to pack in more pixels lol.

http://gizmodo.com/5577677/an-experts-take...phone-4-display

those other phones are half the size of an iPad. i could see someone holding it up to their face and covering up a whole side. laugh.gif

The point is catering to the masses. Not everyone uses a phone for the same exact thing. Some people text more than call, and vice versa. Maybe you're on a nice vacation and you need to check your email and there's no computer around. But oh wait, you have you internet enabled phone! You just saw a nice car in a parking lot, but who drags their camera everywhere with them? Luckily you have a camera phone and boom, you have a picture of the car. Maybe it's just me, but what you're basically saying is: Get a Jitterbug, and buy a big backpack to lug around a laptop, camera, camcorder, mp3 player, radio, notebook, pens, and whatever else. If you like carrying around a bag like that, more power to you. But most people want the convenience of having it all in their hands in a small, portable package, and it's all about finding a need, and filling that need. The most basic rule of economy.

That Streak - it doesn't have portrait mode in the home screen... so good luck navigating with one hand. Not to mention is launches with Android 1.6... well that's only a few versions behind.

The problem with you argument is price. The cost of a camera, laptop, mp3, radio, gps, exe. is going to cost much more then a phone that can do all of that. I payed 150 of my incredible an maybe 30 in apps so my total is 180 and I can do sooooo much more with that then I can with all of those other things. Lets take 1 of my favorite apps I have the Restaurant view finder, what this app does is I hold my camera up and it shows me all the restaurants that are around me and in a city I'm not affiliated with that comes in handy.
