hi guys, well i swapped a beams in my celi and its loads of fun, but of course parts are rare, and problematic to fix.

Just to give you an idea, the gasket set is 400 usd, so i dont even think of popping it open.

But 95CelicaST got me inspirated about the V6, and face it 270 is appealing, and parts are galore here...

Well i know the 3sgte is the bomb, the Beams is great. But why cant we play with our stuff here.

Maybe start a shopping list, like the exact parts needed... IDK, its something only 2 6gc owners have explored..

Shopping list edited so far: This is from multiple websites, i will basically edit as i go along... keep info here... most info was obtained from GUOKY's research

edited 6-14-2014 what i have done for me....

QUOTE
- 2GRFE engine from a 2010 highlander with oil cooler (newer oil lines)(its a 5plug ECU harness, that will be discarded)
- ECU from an non immobilized RAV 4 must bee a 2 plug. (this is the most simple ecu)
- OBDII connector. (Located at the driver's knees, get it from your car. if you are obdII
- Engine harness, i went with a ES350 engine harness, it has the plugs i needed its a 2 plugs
- E153 transmission (s54 will work, but you need to know you cant really hit it..)

stuff you dont want to mess with
- A five ECU plug (hard to get the extra 2 plugs from the dash harness, or you buy them for 160 from Guoky, plus the only way to get them immobilized is to get them new from dealer)
- Immobilizer computer (you dont want to mess with this) toyota will make you spin in circles
- Immobilizer antenna and key. (only if you mess with the above, lol)
- avalon ECU, camry or any other ecu ( may have other functions you dont need, or need to wire, and will give you headaches)

I think V6 is the way to go especially if you go 2gr. The motors will just become more plentiful as time goes on unlike the 3s since they have to be shipped here. The mr2

guys are hooking there 2gr's up to E153. If I'm correct that means it would bolt up to your s54.the only hard part would be everything else haha. but I'm sure members

here would be glad to give you a hand. the basics from what I can see is you need a special flywheel and clutch set up which the mr2 guys probably know what you need.

Fab up some mounting brackets then see what needs to be routed where. Custom axles, custom wiring if you don't want to take that on i think (DR. Tweak) could help you

out. In the beginning it will be a headache but once it finish it would be awesome.

I am no where near an expert on our cars or doing motor swaps in general i wish i did. But in the future when I have my own personal garage I want to attempt a

2gr/E154f (manual out of a gt4) swap on an 03-08 matrix awd (auto). Right now I have an 03 matrix xr fwd to do the swap I would prefer to have the awd model to start.

well good luck with your build dude!!

all v6s bolt to the s54, but you want an e153.

axles:
s54: gt
e153: mr2 inner, 91 camry v6 outer, spacer

mounts:
s54: all gt except passenger(custom)
e-series: st205 rear, gt front/driver, custom passenger

well depends, the s54 from a beams may do well since some have lsd. And the s54 has seen the 5sfte, may not be the most adequate but may just do well...

it will be something fun, im seeing a lot of jdm engines in the market, im trying to stay with a us engine..

dunno, maybe start researching for a rear ended car..

stock tranny wont hold that 2GR power

[cough] bullsh*t[cough]
i've ran 320ftlbs thru my tranny, at the track, and on the street for years.

its all about the driver, and how you take care of your stuff.

wink.gif

2gr or bust.
custom passanger mount, custom crossmember, lots of wiring (we're talking drive by wire here folks) and call it done.

for the guy who's ballsy enough to try it first, carefull review of which chassis it comes out of and weather or not it has an immobilizer ECU is paramount.
guys over on mr2oc have been going back and forth with that crap for the past couple years.

with the 2gr why would it need a custom crossmember if we are using the s54.

So what are the guys using as a base chassis, a Camry? i bet id be fun to have engine immobilizer and all that crap! 5 - 6 grand?

question about this, this 2gr is a newer motor correct? What about the problems with programing the ecu. I feel newer engines need the exact vin programed into the ecu otherwise the engine will not run. correct? I just feel like that whole situation with the ecu and programming it would be a major headache. I know a few manufacturers are doing this to avoid swapping of ecu's and what not.

you feel? some 2GR-FEs have an immobilizer meaning you need the key for the ECU, but the old ones you dont.

im not sure you would have to, just assumed it'd be a snapshot kinda deal.

that engine immobilizer is a BIG hassle. guys on the mr2 forums try to avoid them like the plauge.

wiring will be the nightmare of the swap, but im sure tweak could handle it, or the guy on mr2oc that also does harness work.

whos gonna be the first to have the balls to pony up?

once you fab up a proper passanger side mount, and a set of headers, the rest of getting the motor in the bay should be cake.
the question is will the hood close? wink.gif

:edit:
just to add abit more info to the disscussion, it seems from poking around the net some, that alot of the guys that use the 2gr, end up with early rav4 ecus' that do not have the immobilizer.
they are having a hell of a time trying to find a work around for the later avalon and camry ecus that have the immobilizer programming.
there are a couple of guys out there who have access to the propriatary toyota "techstream" programers that havent been able to get the non immobilizer vins to work in a immobilizer equipped ECU (apparently, all the newer toyota flashes are VIN based, which makes sense)

http://www.mr2oc.com/forumdisplay.php?f=188

heres a good thread with alot of good "general information" on the 2gr

http://www.mr2oc.com/showthread.php?t=366606

theres lots more there too. if your not a member, you really should be.

This might be kind of newb question but what if you ran a standalone could you bypass the immobilizer? I know its alot of money for a standalone but it be worth it so you don't have all that trouble and you can get a newer motor?

In order to contribute to this thread, I love the idea of a V6 Celica. If I were to do a swap, I think it'd be only to swap in something halfway ludicrous - a V6, a 4A-GZE, or maybe build me a monster BEAMS or maybe a built 7A-FTE (7A-FZE? redface.gif redface.gif redface.gif)? Anyway, any research done toward such ventures is cool with me. thumbsup.gif Especially because it might help in the future!

Well lets see i have a 94 celica shell and a 2gr and
eb61 6 spd from 08 Auris I imported last yr. (same as
Evora gearbox)

I will drop in soon to test fit but that motor is going into
my mr2 later in yr.

2gr is amazing but it is not cheap to fit and highly suggest
using a E series gearbox. Budget at least 5k+ to do swap

Parts so far for me
2gr (2010 w/ 200miles) and all the extras $2000
EB61 (9,000 miles) $550 shipped from UK (2 day shipping)

Swap is worth it if have money and resources to do it
right. It is taller that 1MZ so hood clearance will gave to
be addressed.

I have a 6 grand budget for this.... (9972021) << dont pay attention to this

I have gt4 hood, so that may help to a certain degree, if not fiberglass with a scoop, LOL

The transmission worries me, but if my s54 has lsd may help. Ill worry about that later. I dont know if my beams has lsd(thats sad!)

I just need to find a 2gr with no immobilizer, aka Rav4 from what i hear... ( need a rear ended car?)

wiring will be done by phoenix or mr220v, ill do the swap.

just need to mock a passenger side mount then have it built in aluminum or something..

gouky apparently has some nice headers.

Any shop can finish the exhaust.

all ineed to start is the engine.. Time to start looking.

Its a go!

i wonder if the AEM EMS will run this engine, i dont see any reason it wont. a self built patch harness so all the sensors can be read. i think it will be similar to getting it to run the 5S-FTE. I really need to finish that.

rescuing this thread from the dead, highlanders may make the best donors for this swap. there might be a problem with the exhaust, and pedal, but nothing a little fab wont be able to do...

Most of the parts need to be obtained separately, the guys at MR2OC have got it all pretty figured out....

i do believe that the V2 AEM EMS can. i know that some are running it on 7th gen celicas. but it has the be run in parallel with the stock computer. the EMS runs the engine and the stock ECU runs the gauges

Rogue motorsports is a big mr2 tuner in UK they have built 3 or 4 MK3 mr2s (spyders) race cars and most us Link ecu.Thor in UK had to
work out maps for VVTI and give to info to Link from what i have heard.

Here in this video all the spyders have a 2gr and look how silver on destroys everyone off the line .. I have a 95na i am seriously thinking
about installing my 2gr into a spyder instead after seeing this video

Having a V6 2GRFE is already a very tight fit. I doubt you can fit a V8 without cutting into the firewall.
I too am on the hunt from a 2GRFE From a RX45H but can't imagine this being an easy install also it's still a very new car so not many are up for breaking.

How is that ignorant? Please "school" me to how the the 2gr would be a better swap than a 1uz(if the 1uz were feasible in our cars).

1uz - heavy, and slower. ~170whp and 230ish torque on a 1uz (I dynoed two sc400's on Saturday). The 2gr has that beat by over 100whp. Its got more torque too, I just can't remember exact numbers.

Just because it has two more pistons doesn't mean its better. Research is your friend.

You can make any motor have ungodly amounts of power, that doesn't make it better. The 2gr is better technology, better economy, better design, better power, etc.

1uz is a pile of crap.

Class dismissed.

Good job supporting or proving anything you said in your previous post. And sorry if I didn't make it simple enough for you to understand, making more power is much easier and cheaper using a 1uz than a 2gr. And yes the 1uz is a pile of crap, you are so right, your word is fact.

I had a 1uzfe and a 1grfe. I take the grfe 10 times in a rainy day with vomit on my car seats.

The uz is a great swap for one that wants to waste money, and wants torque..

We are talking about a celica swap here, so how could be 1uzfe be that great.

Sorry Kiddo, let the big men talk about swaps.

Here is Marc's (Gouky on MR2OC) 2grfe sw20 dyno run .. He is first guy into install in to a sw20 and
makes the install kits. On a side not may not headers anymore due to lack of sales and high upfront
cost to have made.

Its i a known fact all the the sw20's are showing 270-280 rwhp with Goukys headers.. Many dyno sheets
mr2oc,twobrutal,etc...

I have the motor and 6spd ready to install now into 94 shell but here is my issue.I already own a ST205
so not sure if i want to due a 2gr celica. Plus i own a 95 hardtop mr2 but it needs major body work.

FORGMANN, having a 95 sw20 is the shizznit correct? IIRC thats the rarest year production number wise.
If you want you could ship the car down here and have all the body work done for CHEAP + full paint job.

ok I'm after a clip but having problems finding the correct engine.
The 2grFE are used in quite a few Lexus cars. Which car should I look out for and which version of the engine?
I'm not 100% sure but I think the FX450h has the newest version but they're hard to find.
There are more available from the IS350 and that has a AWD tranny but finding technical information on the Lexus is difficult. The Mr2 boys use a 2006 Avalon engine but is that better than the IS350?
Also aside from finding which version of the 2GRFE's which one can be mated directly to the ST205 tranny?

four-cylinder double overhead camshaft 18RG engine is a classic! Why did you buy that and what are your plans for it?
I've contacted woodsport who did the MR2 transplant for some advice. Arrantly mating the engine to the E153 tranny isn't a problem at all aside from 1 bolt alignment.
However we are limited to getting hold of that engine here in the UK as we mainly have Rav4's which are mostly 4 cyliners as they're cheaper than the v6 and 2008+ Toyota Highlander and RX350's are still pretty new and not many up for scraps.

ok so I've found one at a god price from Australia and waiting to get a quote for a pallet to be shipped to me.
I was told the measurements where 700mm wide x 600mm long x 600mm high. Think it'll fit?
I've spoken to Woodsport and they said it may be tight for the transfer box. No mention about steering rack as someone by someone in this forum before.

with all of the talk in this tread abot this awsome motor, i am suprised that i did not see the REAL question that needs to be asked, or interest poked.... 2GR-FE on the gt4 AWD!!! AND the celica bay has ALOT more room for a turbo!!! best combo IMO!!!

(i also have a 91 sw20 and have been closely following the 2grfe devleopment on mr2oc.com, and there are 3 members on mr2oc that have been doing ALOT of development for/with this motor in just the lst 6 months alone! [gouky's new fuel rails and upgraded injectors!!! biggrin.gif])

imo the availibility of this motor being found in the dirt cheap "you-pull-it's" like crazy-rays (DC/Balt area) is going up, as the life of this motor in the toyota lineup is now hitting its high point. and that is the BEST way for you to get a "cheap" motor. (most of these types of places will sell the motor w/ no acc, "as is" for anbout $150). It might take a wile, and need to spend many weekends there, but the stuff that you will learn, and the reduced cost of the swap would be well worth the time spent. hell, for most this swap takes about a year to do start to finnish (ish). this is definatly not for a DD...

I'm doing a 2gr swap right now in my brother's 93 mr2.

We're looking at a total budget on the swap of around $3000. I'm modifying a set of honda v6 headers. They seem to be about 80% correct for use with the 2gr. I'm doing the wiring, the exhaust, and the motor mount, he's doing the installation (the grunt work). My brother plans to daily drive this car. There really is no reason not to.

There should be no reason why this can't be done in the Celica. You could probably even use your existing s53, or whatever S transmission you happen to have.....though S transmissions are marginal for use with the 2gr. There might be some clearance issues to contend with. Somebody would have to install one to figure that out.

The thing that we need to contend with is the lack of vertical clearance in the celica engine bay. If the MZ barely clears the hood, what's to say that the taller GR will fit? can someone get some measurements of the motors for some benchmarking?

I'm itching to do this swap hardcore, but there is still a lot that needs to be addressed before I can take on a project like this. As my 6g is my DD, I can't do the necessary research required to answer my own questions, let alone the ones in this thread.

only mods done are the ones nessisary to do the swap.. IE: full exahust, and intake.. oh and eliminating the slush-box
this is one of toyot's best flowing motors in the head/intake manifold, toyota sqeezed the hell out of its ability to breath with a sevierly restrictive exhaust. that coupled with a very heavy slushbox = the rated HP that this motor gets when in "true" stock form...
again, this is ONLY with "mods" that it takes to do the swap.. NOTHING els.. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I have wired for about a dozen of these in mr2's. All of my harnesses have been based off of the 2plug harnesses for use with the nonimmobilized rav4 ecu. The 2plug camry engine harnesses are ok to use with the rav4 ecu. For the basic motor, you can use just about any 2gr you can get your hands on.

^^^ thanks for the response, now how much different will the wiring be in a 6th gen. there are big differences between ODB1 SW20s and ODB2 celicas. plus CA smog BS! i couldnt have any CEL on. i know that in toyotas the 2GR is only mated to an auto, but what about the lotus evora? its a 6 speed manual. so thats my loophole for mounting it to a manual tranny

The automatic tranny codes kill the rav4 ecu for California. That and the stock 2gr exhaust manifold interferes with the clutch slave cylinder, so you're stuck with headers, another problem for CA.

You could potentially use evora exhaust parts and the evora ecu, only problem is that those ecu's are all immobilized.

This is definitely an area where toyota is inferior. I've done a number of swaps with Chevys. The ecu's are open, so all I have to do is plug my laptop with tuning software into the obd2 ports, access the ecu, and uncheck the box for security (and rear o2's and evap and automatic). With Toyota, you would think you were trying to access some military secret. The dealer can't even disable security.

the problem with this swap, is no one is done it or tried on a celica. The motors are plenty on ebay, and yards now. people wreck cars every day. its a matter of grabbing the balls to do it. but no one seems interested here. I guess its the cost.

The cost is prohibitive, but I think about the 2gr every day.
No one knows for certain if a 1gr crank will fit in a 2gr, there you would have the potential for 4 liters fwd.

Also, my favorite part about this swap is that the S in ST204/ST202/ST205 stands for S-series engine and the AT-200 has an A-series block so a 2gr equipped celica would be a GRT-204 or GRT-205

Just a matter of wiring and the cost associated with that. Will it be worthwhile going through the hassle versus just dropping in a 1MZ/3MZ hybrid? Though haven't those with MR2's done this now? So one should more or less be able to take what they've done and apply it to the Celica.

Why don't you do it? tongue.gif

290 HP, N/a on a celica, its worthwhile, and the swap is a couple pounds lighter than the 3sgte...

i have too much on my plate, atm. beleive me if i did not have a tore car in my garage, i would totally do it...

Blade Masters have the 2GR's here.

There was a NZ'er with a 2GR SW20 MR2, in the end making 208.7rwKW, since sold.

I mean for what this all might cost though there a lot of cars you can buy with lots of established potential, they're also pushed and not pulled. If the 2GR is as much of a pain as it looks to be, I don't see it being worth the hassle over the 1MZ/3MZ. Yes I'd much rather have the 2GR given similar challenges, but is it worth all the extra trouble? I'd love to see a 2GR Celica, so more power(he he, see what I did there?) to anyone that wants to go out and do it.

I'll do it. I already have the motor and the trans.... Now if only some douche in a BMW didn't wreck Abby, we might be able to get somewhere....

I've got a few ideas on how to get over the hood clearance issues while minimizing the aesthetic impact to the vehicle, but I need to test fit everything before I go broadcasting whiteboard ideas.

Meanwhile, I'm still trying to settle with the insurance company, so I need to see where the funding falls after that.

been rounding up some information about this swap, the cost may be prohibitive, but damn, those mr2 videos are awesome.

This might be kind of newb question but what if you ran a standalone could you bypass the immobilizer? I know its alot of money for a standalone but it be worth it so you don't have all that trouble and you can get a newer motor?

remember the immobilizer is built into the ECU, the engine has nothing to do with it.

Now if you can get the 2GR to work on 1MZ electronics, that would be sweet. Like the 3MZ, the 2GR is a DBW engine so it needs a DBW gas pedal and a bunch more wiring.

My B7 avant is a 2.0t with 200hp and AWD TOO.
I didn't say it wasn't done. Its not worth building a project awd and not being able to up the power to something worth while. A 3s can be used and net over 300 HP easily. This would require a turbo kit and more work
