It is otherwise; the power in the battery is just for startups; but the engine runs off power in the battery all the time; but the alternator provides that power and more- the alternator is connected to the battery.

Basically, it's like this:

Alternator --> battery --> engine

engine starts: -75 battery power
engine continues: -5 battery power every second
alternator power: +25 every second

the power still goes THROUGH the battery- but its power that comes straight from the alt.

this basically results in cleaner spark; which doesn't do much
