I can't get a wrench into the small area where the metal pipe screws onto the bottom of the EGR valve. How are you guys doing it?

You asked what people used/did thats what I used/did. Im not saying buy a set just for this, they're also quite handy for other jobs.
The throttle body is the part that bolt onto the intake where you throttle cable is, it has 4 12mm bolts on the back side. The whole on the intake manifold is where its bolted to.
